I am returning to my research after a very long break and I feel like a beginner!

I would like to find the 2nd marriage of my Gt Grandfather, Benjamin Freeman, but I have very little information to go on.

He was born in Meesden, Hertfordshire in c1869

He is on the 1921 census as being married to 'Amy' (who was born in Langley, Essex in 1885) and  living in Battersea SW11.

He was on the 1911 census with my Gt Grandmother and their children, living in Edmonton, (London/Middlesex).

I know nothing of him between 1911 and 1921 other than he left the family home after Gt Grandmother died in 1912 and the family did not see him again.

Is there anybody that can give me some advice?

Many thanks

US Completed Requests / Marriage certificates for Rochester or possibly Fairport
« on: Thursday 19 June 14 21:38 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone might be able to advise me where to apply for the copy of a certificate for a marriage that took place in either Rochester or Fairport. It would have taken place in 2012. Is that too recent to be allowed to ask the question on this site?

Many thanks.

South Africa / South African birth certificate
« on: Friday 21 September 12 17:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am asking on behalf of a friend who has just begun researching her family tree. She was born in Durban, Natal in the Republic of South Africa in 1947 but has lived in England since 1970. She has never seen her birth certificate and would like to obtain a copy but she does not know where to apply to or how to go about it. She did find a web site for a Consulate and e-mailed them but the e-mail bounced back undelivered.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

United States of America / American marriage certificates
« on: Thursday 07 January 10 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can someone please tell me what information is included on American marriage certificates?

Do the bride and groom have to give details of their father's names and occupations like in the UK?

With thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Batley local newspapers in late 1880's
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Does anyone know what local newpapers would have been in circulation in the Batley areas in the late 1880's and where they would be held? In the late 1880's John Richardson stole the patent to some mill machinery and escaped to America (leaving his wife and young son behind) with the police hot on his heels. I'm hoping that there would have been newspaper reports.

Also where would the Batley parish records be held?

Many thanks

World War One / Died in Germany and buried in France?
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 17:13 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate some advice….

Private Herbert William Freeman, 32592, 13th Battalion, Essex Regiment is buried in Conde-Sur-L’Escaut Communal Cemetery in Nord, France. He died on 20th June 1918.

I got this information from the Roll of Honour web site. However, I have been told that he died of Dysentry in Germany.

Is it possible that he could have died in one country and been buried in another?

Thanking you

Lyndsey

Australia / Passenger information for Friedrich Der Grosse voyage in 1913
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Jane Freeman was born in Meesden, Hertfordshire, England in 1888, the daughter of David and Eliza Freeman.

She was last heard of in the UK in 1911 when she was discharged from the Brompton Hospital Sanatorium, Frimley, Surrey,England where she had been recovering from Tuberculosis. Prior to that she was a 'Ladies Companion' in Finchley, England.

She should have stayed in contact with the sanatorium so that her health could be monitored but she didn't. Records show that when they tried to trace her in 1920 they could not find her and she was 'believed to have gone to Australia'.

There is a Miss Jane Freman (with just one e) on the passenger list of the 'Friedrich Der Grosse' which left Southampton, England on 20th  January 1913 for Sydney NSW. (It's possible she may have travelled on to New Zealand from there).

How can I find out if this is the same Jane? Do any records exist in Australian archives for the 'Friedrich Der Grosse' for that voyage and what personal information about the passengers would they include?

Thank you

Lyndsey

New Zealand Completed Requests / Inexperienced English researcher needs help!
« on: Monday 08 June 09 22:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I need some advice.

Miss Jane Freeman was discharged from The Brampton Hospital Sanatorium in Frimley, Surrey, England (where she was recovering from Tuberculosis) on 5th May 1911. She should have kept in touch with them so they could monitor her health but she didn’t. Their registers show that they tried to trace her in 1920 without success and she was believed to have gone to Australia.

Jane was born c1888 in Meesden, a small hamlet in Hertfordshire, England and was the daughter of David and Eliza Freeman. She was a ‘Ladies Companion’ and her address on the sanatorium registers was 53 Princes Avenue, Finchley (now in North London although the boundaries might have been different then).

There is an entry for a Miss Jane Freman (with only one ‘e’) on the passenger list of the ‘Friedrich (Frederick) Der Grosse’ which left Southampton on 20th January 1913 for Sydney. It shows that her intended final destination was New Zealand.

Can anybody suggest how I can find out if this is the ‘right’ Jane based on the information I have? I have no experience of New Zealand (or Australian) records.

Many thanks

Lyndsey
