Cheshire / ‘Scattered Homes’
« on: Tuesday 28 August 18 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters. I am hoping someone may be able to offer some assistance. In 1919 my mother was aged 4. Her mother had to take her and two of her siblings to the workhouse. Her husband had died some years previously and her eldest two boys who had been providing family income died. The last one died in the final wave of the pandemic flu epidemic.  I have found the record of them being ‘acccepted’ by the Birkenhead Workhouse (St Catherines). It states they were accepted and then sent separately to ‘Scattered Homes”. Does anyone have any advice on how I might find where these homes were? My mother related her experiences in this home and they sound like ‘Annie’ the musical. The family in this ‘foster home’ ate the potatoes and fed the peelings to the foster children. I am pleased to say that my mothers eldest sister secured accomodation and built furniture from orange boxes and got her younger siblings out of the care system. I think they were only in care for approximately 6 years. Any indication how I might find the address of these  Scattered Homes would be much appreciated. Thank you. Kathb

« on: Saturday 11 August 18 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello fellow Rootschatters. Please can someone tell me how to obtain my fathers WW11 service record and how much would it cost? He was born 1911, so would I have to provide evidence of relationship? I have his Soldiers Service and Paybook (Army book 64) this has his Army number in the book. Thanks.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Lookup Please Liverpool Record Office
« on: Sunday 27 November 16 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,  I would really appreciate some assistance with the details of the following marriage.
Alice Fitzsimmons and William R Jarman. Freebmd has this as the December Quarter of 1942. Lancashire BMD corroborates this as 1942 and shows that it took place at St Dunstans, Edge Hill.
Alice was christened Alice Maude(e), although she seems not to have always used the Maude. She has been a brick wall of mine for many years. The last evidence I have is her entry in the 1939 register. This does not seem to be updated with any married name, but I am trying to rule out all angles. Alice was born in Birkenhead on 8th May 1896. I have her entry on all relevant census and birth certificate and christening entry.
Thanking you in anticipation

Technical Help / Ipad compatable Family History software
« on: Tuesday 11 October 16 02:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi, no doubt others have asked this before. I have used Family Historian for years. I have now however become used to using my Ipad and am thinking of ditching my Windows based laptop.
I would appreciate opinions on compatable software to use with an Ipad.

Lancashire / Calderstones Park
« on: Thursday 16 April 15 12:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I Have a letter saying that an ancestor was a housekeeper at a large house in this area. It's a long shot I know. It is likely to be in the 1917 to 1924 period. Any ideas please?

Cheshire / Malpas
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 18:38 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone with knowledge of this village help? I remember my parents taking me to visit a relative of my father, ?his aunt. I distinctly remember she lived in a Cheshire County Council built bungalow. It would have been approx 1958 to 1963. I realise that my possible best chance is to look at the electoral rolls and then track back to look for a connection. It would really help if anyone could narrow down the streets and bungalow numbers. I don't know her name so its going to be a process of elimination. Thanks
