Mary married Mark Whipps in Rotherhithe, Surrey in 1850 and died in 1854.

Kent Lookup Requests / William Messer c1804 Greenwich
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 16:21 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find DOB or christening for William Messer.

Census records from 1841 to 1861 all indicate born in Kent (the latter two: Greenwich) and his ages are consistent with birth year 1804 ish.

William was married to Eleanor Bedwards and their children were christened in St Alphages, Greenwich (1827 to 1849).  However, during the same period there was another family: William Messer with wife Maria whose children were also christened in St Alphages (1821 to 1833).

Any help would be appreciated,
Martin

Canada Lookup Request / John Burns from England
« on: Friday 21 August 09 12:55 BST (UK)  »
John Burns was my great uncle; he was born in Rotherhithe, London on 21/02/1886.

He emigrated  to Canada, probably between 1908 and 1915, and subsequently enlisted in the CEF on 13/05/1915.  His attestation papers indicate that he was "invalided to Canada for further medical treatment" from the Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Hillingdon House, Uxbridge.  I believe this hospital closed in 1917.

Thanks to either the Canadian Red Cross or Salvation Army contact between John and his sister, Mrs Mary Whipps in England, was eventually restored.  Mary died in 1970 and I know that by that time John was already dead.

I have ordered a copy of his military file from LAC but would also like some help with his immigration to Canada and also his date and location of death.

Regards Martin.

Armed Forces / Essex Regiment
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 16:19 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information about John Burns serving in the Essex Regiment.

John was born c1886 in Rotherhithe, London.  He served in the Merchant Marine prior to going to Canada.  In 1915 he enlisted in the CEF and on his attestation papers he mentions being in the Essex Reg. for six years.  This would probably be within the period 1902 to 1912.

Would appreciate some help or pointers on this one.

Martin.

Hello all,

Elizabeth Altoft was born in 1854 in Thorne Union Workhouse
Her mother is shown as Jane Altoft.

I have found a Jane Altoft aged 20 in 1841 census on a farm in Bottesford, Lincolnshire.

In 1891 census she is shown as single aged 70 born Bottesford, living in Messingham, Lincolnshire.

1881 census shows a Jane Altoft unmarried aged 60 in Sculcoates.  Her age and status look good but her birthplace is shown as Louth in Lincolnshire.

1871 census for Sculcoates also has a Jane Altoft unmarried aged 47 from Botsworth (Bottesford) Lincolnshire

1861 census has the same Jane unmarried, aged 36 from Botsford, Lincolnshire.

The only census record I can find for Eliza Altoft is in 1871. She is shown as aged 16 from Epworth, living with her sister Maria Kelsey(26) and her family in Lancashire.  Jane had an elder brother William and one of his children was Maria born 1846 in Epworth. Possibly Elizabeth was brought up by William but she does not appear in William's household in 1861 census.

Finally Elizabeth married Jabez Arthur Brundish in 1875 in Lancashire and later moved back to Epworth.

I really would like to know where Elizabeth (or Eliza) was in 1861.
