England / Probate of (Irish) American filed in England
« on: Saturday 03 March 18 19:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I hope this question is in-bounds for discussion here.

My 2xGGF John Henry Fagan was born in New York City in 1859 and died in the suburbs north of the city in 1932.  His parents were both born in Ireland, but he never lived anywhere outside of New York State.

Once I found his date of death I located his will which was filed where he was living (in New York) at the time of death.  Puzzlingly, I also found a probate record in Ancestry's England & Wales, National Probate Calendar indexed in 1933.  I have tried to research reasons why his will would show up in England, but have not come up with any satisfactory answers.

The Irish origin of the family beyond him is still my major brick wall and I'm wondering if there may be a clue here somewhere.

Does anyone know what reasons there would be to file a probate record in England for someone who lived their entire life in the USA?

Many thanks,
Kevin Fagan

Europe / German to English - Hamburg Death Record
« on: Monday 14 September 15 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm researching a branch of my family that goes back to Hamburg, Germany.  I have a death record that I'm hoping to get some help translating.  I believe I have figured out the following, but I'm wondering if there is any other useful or interesting information in this document?

Name of deceased: Martha Auguste Niclaudine Larsson
Date of birth: 5 January 1879
Date of death: 22 June 1931
Place of death: Hamburg
Spouse: Fritz Albert Bernhard Gorland - University Professor

Very grateful for any help.

Thanks!
Kevin

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Jewish Headstone Transcription Help
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 00:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I hope this is a good place to post this.  I have a Jewish line on my father's side, but was not raised in the faith so I'm doing my best to learn about the culture as I research.

I was able to find the headstone for one set of my Jewish 3x Great-Grandparents.  It's a large square stone.  On two of the sides are English inscriptions and on the other 2 sides are inscriptions in Hebrew/Yiddish.  I'm hoping someone might be able to help me figure out what these inscriptions say?

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks!
Kevin

Ireland / John Fagan / Mary McFarland -- Needle in a haystack?
« on: Tuesday 07 October 14 07:22 BST (UK)  »
I've been searching for the Irish immigrant link to move my research to the island and have hit a major brick wall.  I'm completely at a loss so I'm hoping someone here might have some advice?

The death certificate for my GG-Grandfather John Henry Fagan (b. 1859 in New York) lists father John Fagan and mother Mary McFarland -- both born in Ireland.  His marriage certificate lists no parent names and no birth certificate for him seems to exist.  All I have to go on are his parents' (quite common) names.

Any advice on how to pin down this John and Mary?

I found an immigration record showing a (both 16-year-old) Mary McFarland and a John Fagan traveling to the USA on the same ship (Colonist) arriving in January 1851.  I'd love to believe they fell in love onboard and later married, but aside from these possibly-coincidental names I've found nothing I can use to pin down this John and Mary Fagan.  Nothing seems to fit them from the 1860/1870 US censuses.

Somewhat strangely... I'm also seeing a probate listing in London from 1933 relating to John Henry Fagan's death in 1932.  Strange considering he was born in the US and appears to have lived there throughout his life?

Any advice or encouragement is welcome!
