The Common Room / illegitimate child given fathers name after first registration
« on: Friday 27 August 21 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,  When looking at birth records, i.e. those we can see on various ancestry sites, how would it show if an illegitimate child was first registered in the mother's name and then later changed to the father's or perhaps there was an adoption?   Expecting to find a mother's name only, using a free bmd site, I recently came across a child registered on the same page and line number with two different surnames and "C J"  after both names.  Could it be a "court judgement" allowing/forcing the biological father to accept his child?  Or, is it likely that two children of the same names, not popular ones, coincidentally were registered on the same page and both had "C J" included?  This was a late 20th century registration.  Thanks.  Anne

The Common Room / Fransuscuscam Humax - marriage 1620
« on: Friday 18 August 17 09:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello,  I came across the name Fransuscuscam Humax, on a marriage in 1620, whilst trawling for my own family tree and cannot translate it.  I assume it has something to do with the civil disobedience where priests 'latinised' names, but I can usually see what the original probably was, but this one has defeated me.

I cannot find the name 'Humax' anywhere else, re. ancestry, except for this particular wedding.  I guess Fransuscuscam is Francis or Frances, but does cuscam or suscuscam mean anything in Latin?  The spouse is noted as Johanes Whooper.  Can anyone help with a translation, please?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Mary Polin Greenwich 1939
« on: Friday 09 June 17 20:13 BST (UK)  »
Mary Theresa POLIN married Frederick C HARRIS in Mar Qtr 1939.  Does anyone have this couple in their family tree, please?  I think, Mary was alone in Maidenhead in the 1939 Register and Frederick was working in the City of London.  Was this Frederick Charles HARRIS and did they both survive the war?    Thank you.

England / Birth Registration 1906 - England - General Enquiry
« on: Friday 16 September 16 09:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Does anyone know what would have happened if: in the 1900s a married woman gave birth to a live baby, when her husband was away at sea for a few more months, but she was too ill to register the birth herself? How could the child be registered within the legal time?   I'm thinking this is before the availability of forms to take home and complete.

London and Middlesex / Fred HARRIS, Great Eastern Hotel, City of London, WW2
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Trying to trace Frederick Charles Harris, born Norfolk, England, 1912.    1939 Registration has him as a Hotel Waiter at the Great Eastern Hotel, City of London.  No identifiable trace of him from here on.    Service records have been tried without success.

The Great Eastern was bombed in 1941 – does anyone know of records of casualties or other details, such as staff records, which might help, please?

Anne :)

Norfolk Completed Look up Requests / Frederick Charles Harris Norfolk
« on: Friday 22 April 16 19:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Does anyone have details of Frederick Charles Harris from 1938 onwards, please.  He was born in Barton Bendish - Downham, Norfolk, England in 1912 to Mary Ann and Robert Harris.  He was unmarried and killed in WWII, but I can't find a gravestone or other record of him.  He was unlikely to have been living at home when he joined up.  I don't know his regiment, but I think it was Army.

Thanks

Anne :)

Nottinghamshire / Thomas Locke and Sarah Anne Taylor - possibly Nottinghamshire
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 08:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I’m looking for the marriage of Thomas Locke and Sarah Ann Taylor.  Thomas was unmarried and a soldier in 1861 but may have left the army by 1871. Sarah Ann (nee Taylor, from other children records) was probably Roman Catholic and might have been born in Dublin or Nottingham.   Angelina died before 1877 when a second Angelina was christened.

The only marriage I can find is in 1857, before Angelina was born and when Sarah might have been 16/17.   From this, Angelina could not have been registered as Locke.

1871 Census: (part of family)
Thomas Locke       Head         49 Aldbourne, Wiltshire.  born: c 1822
Sarah A Locke      Wife           31 Nottingham.              born:  c 1840
Angelina E Locke   Daughter   12 Nottingham.               born:  c 1859

Thanks,   Anne.

Hi,
Elizabeth Ward, 1799, Polesworth, Warwickshire married William Taylor, 1808, from Derbyshire.  Does anyone have details of either of these marriages, please, e.g. ages, parents or condition of the couple (spinster or widow etc.) so I can accept or eliminate it from my Tree.  A Stafford connection is feasible for this couple. I can’t find a Warwickshire marriage.  The Derbyshire marriage is not necessarily the correct one.  It could even be they “married” twice to satisfy two different families or creeds.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NKZW-C96      Marriage on 21st March 1831, in Rushall, Stafford.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NN8D-H6J         Marriage on 11th October 1835, in Melbourne, Derbyshire.

Thank you. :)

« on: Sunday 03 April 16 09:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Mary Elizabeth Taylor was born/registered Jan-Mar 1868 in Basford, Nottingham and died in Basford within the same quarter.  Does anyone have access to the Basford parish records, to see if there is a note as to the circumstances, please?
