Armed Forces / Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
« on: Monday 10 December 18 08:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered that my stepdad's grandfather Andrew LINDSAY (b. 1887 Co. Tyrone, 1952 Western Australia) served in the Royal Inniskilling Fuslliers, including during WWI and for 5 years after the war in India (from his obituary). How do I go about finding out more about his service please?

Australia / Inquiry into abuse of British Child Migrants underway!
« on: Sunday 19 March 17 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
Last month the BBC reported that the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse will focus on British child migrants in the first of its full public hearings. See http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-39078652

Thousands of British children were sent across the world to new lives through religious or charitable institutions. Some 80,000 children were sent to Canada before 1914. In the final wave of child migration (1945-1974) around 4,000 children went to Australia, some as young as four years of age.

Children sent to Canada were generally placed in homes with families. Children sent to Australia were placed in institutions, where many were sexually or physically abused and used as forced labour.

The Inquiry is expected to take five years in total – it is hoped it will answer the question: Did the British government know it was sending children to be mistreated in a foreign country?

Margaret Humphreys, author of Oranges and Sunshine (which is what British children were told to expect when they came to Australia) said: "We want to know what happened, we want to know who did it, and we want to know who covered it up for so long."

Do you have a family member impacted by child migration? Or is there a child in your family tree who suddenly vanished from records?

Antrim / Hugh HUNTER and Anne LAVERY
« on: Friday 04 November 16 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Is there any way to locate an early NI marriage for this couple, most likely in Belfast c1840?

Hugh was a cabinetmaker/carpenter.

They had a daughter Mary Anne c1843 and son David Hy c1852.

No idea if there were others in between who did not survive.

By 1856 they were in England, where they had another son, William Warhim/Warham HUNTER (I have his details).

Thank you!

Armed Forces / 15th Kings Hussars 1870s - David HUNTER
« on: Friday 04 November 16 06:07 GMT (UK)  »
My gg grandfather was a Private in the 15th Hussars c1870.

His name was David Henry HUNTER. He was actually born in Belfast c1852, son of Hugh & Annie.

I believe his service number was 1059.

Hoping to find the service details please as it may tie up some loose ends in later certificates.

(I have his marriages and children in Kent - just seeking service details please. Likely death for him in 1885 in Kent aged 33. No hard proof this is the right chap, though 1881 is the last census I can find him and by the 1891 Census his wife is shown as a widow.)

South Africa / Lydia MARKS b. 1875 UK in Cape Town c1930s
« on: Saturday 21 May 16 07:47 BST (UK)  »
Lydia CHAPMAN, daughter of William CHAPMAN and Emma MORLEY, born in 1875 in London UK. She first married David Henry HUNTER (my gt grandfather) in 1900 in Kent, England. He died there in 1915 but in the 1911 UK Census he is shown as widowed, a boarder, married 7 years with 2 children. Neither of the children are with him (my grandfather was in hospital, aged 6, can't find his sister Lily/Lilian).

By 1934, my grandfather (also David Hy) had emigrated to Australia, where he married my grandmother. His newspaper engagement announcement states "son of Mrs. L. Marks, Cape Town, South Africa" - another newspaper has her as Mrs Le Marks (I believe the L is for Lydia and the 'Le' Marks an error).

This was a huge surprise as the family story was that she had died in childbirth with her 3rd child. But neither her death nor the baby's is to be found. So now I suspect she left the family and the story was a cover up.

I have been unable to trace her at all remarrying in England and wonder if there is any record of her emigration, marriage and/or death in South Africa please?

Any help at all much appreciated, this is a long-standing brick wall for me! Thank you.

Australia / Brick wall anyone? HUNTER & DEVLIN
« on: Friday 25 March 16 09:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have a brick wall I'd love to even crack a little please :)

I'm posting on the Australian board as that's where they lived, though I have no idea where this couple originated. I cannot find an Australian marriage (or arrival).

Here's what I know:
Joseph HUNTER born c1864, involved in tin mining in Western Australia, where he died in 1922, aged 58 (buried Bunbury). He went bankrupt in 1911, having been in the state of WA for 17 years. Prior to this I know he was in Qld, where he had a daughter. I have his obit from Trove.

His wife was Mary DEVLIN (could it be D'EVLIN?) who died 1931 aged 71, also in WA. No other clues on her origin either (born c1860).

They had 3 (known) children:
Margaret Devlin HUNTER born 1893 Qld, died 1977 WA
Joseph Lawrence HUNTER born 1897 WA, died 1897 WA
John Croesus HUNTER born 1898 WA, died 1961 NZ

I have info on Margaret and John (Jack), and dates/burials/death notices for their parents, it is only the marriage and/or birthplace of Joseph & Mary I am seeking so I can go back further. I appreciate I may need to fork out the exhorbitant Qld BDM prices for Margaret's birth cert to find out more!

Any help gratefully received.

Australia / Henry NORTON c1903-1926 WA
« on: Sunday 17 January 16 04:48 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking any information to identify family of this chap please.

He died in Dec 1926 in Perth district of Western Australia, aged 23, late of Collie, burial at Karrakatta (RC) (sources - MCB WA, WA BDM reg 1625, NLA Trove). His death reg does not show parents names. No matching birth in WA.

His funeral notice was placed by his aunt Catherine CLOSE nee NORTON (c1874-1957): http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article82037401

She is my connection (indirect) but is a brick wall. I'm hoping by tracing Henry it will help find Catherine.

Catherine married in Perth in 1920 and died in Collie 14 Nov 1957 aged 83. I have no clue where she was born. Her death shows parents as Henry & Catherine but no idea if this is accurate. She is buried at Collie Cemetery.

I don't need a lot of detail (as I mentioned she is not a direct link) but just to 'dot the i's' so to speak I'd love to solve this one. Thanks in advance  :)

P.S. I have ruled out the Catherine/Kate Norton who was wife of Roger BUCKINGHAM (she died in 1953).

Australia / Wm BARNSLEY arriving Parthia, Sydney 1886
« on: Saturday 16 January 16 03:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have just come across this entry in NSW immigrants. I've found newspaper articles about the ship's journey and subsequent quarantine etc.

I'd like to find any available details on this specific passenger, who I believe to be my great grandfather, William BARNSLEY b. 1864 in Shropshire. His first marriage was in 1888 in Bulli NSW so it fits the timeline.

**Please note I already do have details of his extended family in the UK and his marriages, children and death in Australia, including newspaper articles, death notices, burial etc.**

I'm seeking the passenger list if available please to see if I can match any other details, e.g. birthplace or occupation, to confirm or disprove it as the right record. (He was a bricklayer at the time.)

Thank you, fingers crossed  :)
