Kilkenny / Determining Towland

Hope you can help research my gr gr grandfather. He was James Brown. Have some good information on him already but can't go very far in Ireland without some basic information. Don't know his exact year of birth. Census records for US and Canada say 1842/1843. Death certificate says 1847 and military record says 1839. With such a common name I am asked to give some other bits of information that I do not have and don't know how to find. Here is what I have. James Brown, born in the parish of St Marys, in the town of Kilkenny, in the county of Kilkenny. HIs parents were William Brown and Catharine Ledwell. Would like to know about siblings and about his parents families. In my search I have been asked to provide the name of the Townland. When searching for the Townland I am asked for the civil parish or barony. How do I find this information?  Please help.

Help!  Have reached a road block in my Irish genealogy. Gr gr grandfather was James Brown. Have some good information on him already but can't go very far in Ireland without some basic information. Don't know his exact year of birth. Census records for US and Canada say 1842/1843, death record says 1847 military record says 1839. With such a common name I am asked to give some other bits of information that I do not have and don't know how to find. Here's what I have. James Brown b. in the parish of St Marys, in the town of Kilkenny, in the county of Kilkenny, on March 18, ____. Parents were William Brown and Catherina Ledwell. Would like to know about siblings and about his parents families. Am sometimes asked to provide name of Townland. Researched Townlands and am asked about civil parish and barony. How do I find this information? Read an enlightening article on the Irish Genealogy Toolkit but am still stuck. Please help.
