Europe / WOYCKE and CLOSE - German families from present-day Poland
« on: Friday 05 August 16 12:35 BST (UK)  »
I am wanting to research my mother's family ;
My Great Grandmother was born "Close" on a barge near Nagot-Spitze, part of the river Weichsel near Gdansk;
My Grandmother was born "Woycke" in Usch (now a Polish name), and then spent time in an orphanage in Posen after her father committed suicide about 1911.
My Mother was born "Woycke" in Schneidermuhl" ,now Pila in Poland.

I understand that a lot of the German records were destroyed after WW2 when this part of Germany reverted to Poland.

My German is limited.

Any suggestions on where/how to start looking for information?

Thankyou,

Quaker Family History / Were "Non-members" buried by Quakers?
« on: Tuesday 02 August 16 23:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have been researching the Guthrie family of London , Middlesex.
In particular William Guthrie b 1766 and buried 1826 at Bunhill Fields.

On Ancestry I found his death and what looks like a Quaker burial. It would appear that his death was recorded in a Quaker Meeting at Peel's Court, John Street, Westminster.

The record states that he was "not a member".

Does this mean he was not a member of that "Court" but a Quaker or that he had a Quaker burial but was not of that faith?

I found it interesting that his son Isaac Guthrie was baptised at St Mary, Finchley in 1829 with his daughter Hannah. He was born 1791 so may have converted?

Also that Isaac named one of his sons "John Pritchard Guthrie"
Could the name "Pritchard" be a nod to his Quaker roots?

Any input would be appreciated.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Alexander ALLAN and family
« on: Tuesday 02 August 16 01:04 BST (UK)  »
I finally found detailed obituaries for my husband's great grandma and family on Papers Past. The obituaries stated that Alexander Allan and family came to NZ aboard the "Helenslee" in 1864. They originally settled in Pokeno and were witness to many events of the early pioneers (at end of Maori Wars).
Alexander then apparently was at the opening of the Thames goldfield where he put down the Golden Gate Shaft. Then he was one of the original owners of the coal measures subsequently operated by the Taupiri Coal Mines at Huntly. Then he went onto to farm near Te Rapa before retiring to Papakura where he died in 1912. he is buried at Papakura with his second wife and a daughter from his first marriage.
This was a "brick wall" that I had been trying to break for some time.
Does anyone know any more about the Golden Gate shaft in its early days/ or the coal measures at Huntly?

 :)
