Ireland / Prerogative Wills Index lookup please?
« on: Wednesday 27 July 05 15:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm hoping sks has a copy of "Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland" and willing to look up the following entries for me:

1796 Coulter, Joseph, Dowdallshill, co. Louth, gent.
1801 Coulter, Joseph, Carnbegg, co. Louth, gent.

I think/hope these entries should also have reference information (volume number?) that I was newbie enough not to copy when I had access to the index (alas, no longer).

I want to order the LDS film(s) for these entries and believe I need volume information from the index to decide which films I need. If I'm wrong about this, then perhaps someone who knows could explain how to go about it?

Thanks,
Steve

PS for anyone who is wondering what all this is about - all the Prerogative Wills of Ireland were destroyed in 1922, but there are surviving genealogical abstracts of most of the wills up to 1810, by Betham - the index is to his abstracts.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / 1851 census Cockermouth - Isabella JOHNS(T)ON
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 13:46 BST (UK) »
Greetings Genies,

I think I've finally found my Isabella JOHNS(T)ON nee DYER in the 1861 census Cockermouth:

RG9/3935/94/33 Derwent St
   WHITAKER Betsy / head / mar / 37 / Cleator
   SCOFIELD Sarah J / dau / 11 / Hull
   WHITAKER James / son / 4 / Cockermouth
   JOHNSTON Isabella / grandmother (sic) / wid / 73 / Whitehaven

Betsy JOHNSON/SCHOFIELD/WHITTAKER fits fairly well with Isabella's daughter Elizabeth b 1821. Also, a Henry JOHNSTON just around the corner in Crown St Cockermouth in 1861 census fits perfectly with Isabella's son Henry b 1818 Whitehaven. So I think (hope!) this is my Isabella.

I'd be grateful if SKS could please check 1851 census for Cockermouth for Isabella JOHNS(T)ON, hoping she's with husband Joseph to confirm it is the right Isabella (marr 1817 St Bees). When youngest son William arrived Sydney 1852, he said they were both living, and in Cumberland.

Roly Grigg's index shows the following in Cockermouth, giving me hope:
JOHNSTON ... Jos (54) Isabella (62) ... [2434 fols 420-507]
I checked online partial transcription for Cockermouth 1851, but they're not there.

TIA
Steve

PS Whoo-hoo! In the 1871, 83yo Isabella is head at Derwent St (lodging house), and "Betty" (39yo!) correctly shown as daughter (her husband William is at home too). Then in 1881 Elizabeth WHITTAKER (58yo) is there as head (William elsewhere again). I'm pretty sure these are the folk I've been looking for the last five years... just wish Betsy would age at the same rate as the rest of us...

PPS Even better, just found another of Isabella's daughters, Maria b. 1819 in Cleator, marr to Thomas BELL and living in Cockermouth in 1861 - looks like the whole tribe moved from Whitehaven some time.

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/51 census Walcot?
« on: Sunday 13 March 05 08:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have some information from 1841 & 1851 census but would really like extra information if at all possible, especially for the 1851 as I only have index data.

Family is Thomas & Elizabeth MILLARD living at 53 Avon Street, in the Lansdown portion of Walcot near Bath. Thomas is a shoemaker.

These are the family groupings from the censuses - there are also others at the address whose relationship (if any) I don't know yet. I'm not sure of some of the ref numbers for 1851...

1841: pc 970, ed 2, fo 36, pg 22 & 23
53 Avon Street, Walcot
MILLARD Thos & Elizh; Thos, Mary, Susannah, Leah, Jane, William, Daniel, Elizh
MILLARD John (brother)
others BULLGER, SMITH, JEFSON

1851: pc 1943?, fo 129, pg 40?/42?, dwelling no 155
MILLARD Thomas & Elizabeth; Leah, Jane, William, Daniel, Elizabeth, Maria
TILEY John & Mary (daughter); Charles
others PURNELL, WESTON

Any help appreciated!

Technical Help / Attachments
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 16:15 GMT (UK) »
Usually when posting a reply, "Additional Options" allows me to add attachments... but sometimes (recently) the "Attach" option does not come up (but it's there this time).

It seems a bit random - the option mainly not there when I really *do* want to attach (Sod's Law in action).

Sussex / HAMILTON at Brighton early 1800s
« on: Sunday 06 February 05 10:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

This is a long shot - looking for Elizabeth HAMILTON born about 1822 possibly at Brighton.

She went to Tasmania perhaps c1840 where her uncle Thomas HAMILTON was already living at Hobart.

That's about all I have on the English end as migration records haven't helped. Just hoping someone has a Thomas & Elizabeth uncle & niece in their tree...

Cheers

Occupation Interests / Dentist Royal in Reading Berks
« on: Sunday 06 February 05 00:59 GMT (UK) »
This concerns William Henry Wackerell STAVELEY (b. Dec 1822 Camelford Cornwall, d. 27 Jul 1891 Reading Berks), my g2-grand-uncle by marriage to Frances SIMS.

He was a prominent dentist (& sometime chemist, druggist, insurance agent) in Reading for 40+ years. Both his father and his son were surgeons.

In earlier censuses he puts his occupation down as "Dentist", but in 1891 (a few months before his death) it appears to be "Dentist (Royal)" as shown in the image.

When I first saw this it thought it might be analogous to "Physician Royal", but I have been unable to find out more.

My current thoughts are:
- It was some sort of honorary title? OR
- It was an official appointment possibly involving letters patent? OR
- He was making the whole thing up (though why he should do this in a document to be sealed for 100 years escapes me).

I'm trying to resist the image of the elderly dentist heading up the road to Windsor, black bag in hand... I don't imagine VR had too many teeth left by then...

I'd welcome any advice on royal appointments, and how to follow this up.

Cheers
Steve

PS Then a generation further back there is a g3-grand-uncle by marriage to Elizabeth SIMS, one Henry HAVELL (from a noted family of artists, engravers, etc).

One of the older art refs (Bryans) says Henry was "Decorator to the King" before he & Elizabeth left for New York c1829 - this too remains a mystery...

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census BODLEY in Simpson
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 02:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Could some kind soul please look up the BODLEY brothers for me in the 1851 census?

They should all be in Simpson/Sympson in 1851, though all were born Bow Brickhill. The name may appear as BODLEY, BODILY, or BODILEY, and possibly other variants I haven't yet seen.

I have listed approximate ages, and the children that I think I know of.

Joseph BODLEY 46 beer retailer
Ann (LUCAS)
    Mary Ann 19
    William 17

John BODLEY 44 grocer
Maria (LUCAS)
    Ann 11
    Eli 1

Emery BODLEY 42
Sarah Ann (COWLEY) 30 (possibly died by 1851)
    George 11
    Hannah 9
    Alfred 1

Emery seems to get mistranscribed in many indexes (eg. Severy, Emily!). He won't be in later censuses as he remarried and went to NSW in late 1850's.

Thanks & Regards

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841/51/61 census Manchester - GREENHALGH
« on: Wednesday 12 January 05 10:12 GMT (UK) »
Could I please have a lookup for my GREENHALGH family in Manchester in any early census:

Thomas GREENHALGH born by 1807 (Manchester?)
Prudence (nee HOWARD) born by 1807, bapt 17 Sep 1809 Manchester
They married 2 Jun 1828 Manchester; known children:
Hannah bapt 2 Oct 1831 Manchester
Frances bapt 2 Oct 1831 Manchester
James William bapt 21 Jul 1833 Manchester
Thomas bapt 8 Dec 1839 Manchester (born Manchester, probably 1839 Q3).

The marriage is by banns, no consent shown, so probably Thomas & Prudence were of age thus born no later than 1807.
The name sometimes appears as GREENHALCH, eg. on the marriage record.
The marriage and all baptisms shown were at Manchester Cathedral.
Thomas sen. was a labourer in 1828, reportedly a builder by 1865.
Thomas jun. went to Australia in 1863 as a single man.

I don't have any addresses, and I do appreciate just how big Manchester was/is. So I'm hoping that some kind soul has a name index to an early Manchester census esp. 1851 or 1861, and can find the family by looking for Prudence GREENHALGH - Thomas may be too hard as there were many Thomas GREENHALGH in that part of the world!

Any help or advice much appreciated. Even a folio reference or general location would help.

Thank you
Steve

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1861/1871 census Coventry Warwickshire
« on: Friday 23 July 04 17:40 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could I please have a lookup on 1871 census for Coventry? and/or 1861 if possible?

Looking for John PICKERING of Coventry, c1790-1878. I already have 1841 & 1851 census, but his origin is still obscure despite all the info I have. I'm hoping 1871 census may give a recognisable birthplace.

Born 1787-92 (sources vary). Birthplace given as Oakley (Warks) in 1851 census, which seems obscure - may be some connection with Oakley Wood area near Warwick.

1826 marriage to Sarah EDKINS at St Mary Warwick gives Budbrooke as his parish. Budbrooke covered in IGI but his baptism not there.

He was widowed in 1848 and did not remarry.

Occupation - a tavern keeper (Kings Arms) in Mill Lane Coventry at least 1828-1841. However 1851 census says Ag Lab, and living in Harnall Lane Coventry.

No further info until he entered Bablake Hospital (men's hospice) around 1873.

In 1871 probably staying with one of his children, either
Henry & Sarah BURDEN in Coventry; or
Thomas & Elizabeth PICKERING in Coventry (Chauntry Place in 1881); or perhaps
William & Louisa PICKERING in Stoke (Shakespeare St in 1881)

Regards
Steve
