Family History Beginners Board / Was residence a medical facility?
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 00:43 GMT (UK)  »
A family member died in 1914 of tuberculosis at 60 Hartington Terrace in South Shields.   This is not where the family was living at the time, and I am wondering if the property was used as a sort of hospice or for medical isolation.  Thank you for any help!

Durham / Durham Assize Court
« on: Sunday 01 March 20 05:33 GMT (UK)  »
I found a record of John Snaith, aged 22 in 1844, tried in the Durham County Assize Court for perjury.  Apparently, he was sentenced to two years in prison.  I am wondering if this John Snaith is my great-grandfather--his parents were Francis Snaith and Elizabeth Dryden (or Drydon) Snaith and he was born in 1821 or 1822 in Easington, Durham.
I would be very grateful for any advice on how to research this: the identity of John Snaith, the trial and which prison.
Thank you. :)

I am trying to find information about the death of Francis Snaith, born abt. 1800 at Bishopton, Durham.  The date of death is July 14, 1863, and I wonder if there is a headstone or other record at Etherley.
thank you so much for any help.

Family History Beginners Board / When did Francis Snaith die?
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 06:06 BST (UK)  »
Francis Snaith was born abt 1800 and lived in small villages in Durham.  He married Elizabeth Drydon in 1820.  1841 described as a farmer, married an dliving in Escomb, Durham with wife and five of his children.  1851 he was a "a farmer of 50 acres" living with wife and three of his children in Hexham, Northumberland.  In April, 1856 he is listed on his son John's marriage license as a "husbandman."   I am wondering if that confirms that he was alive on that date--or did they list the occupation of the father even he was deceased?
In 1871 Elizabeth, the wife of Francis Snaith, is described as a widow living with her son and his family.  So, I am thinking he died sometime between 1856 and 1871.  I have a death certificate describing a Francis Snaith as a "cartman" who died on December 2, 1856 fro injury after his cart "jambed him."   The certificate is signed by the coroner.
I saw one undocumented account that he died in 1859 at the age of 59, but I can find no record of this.  I am wondering if I should assume that the cartman is Francis Snaith who used to be a farmer.
The only other death of a Francis Snaith  i could find was of a day old baby.
Thank you for any ideas you might have.

Family History Beginners Board / Dodds Building, Priestpopple, Hexham, Durham
« on: Saturday 12 September 15 07:31 BST (UK)  »
Quite a few families were listed as living at Dodds Building, Priestpopple, Hexham, Durham, in the 1851 census.  I wondered if perhaps this was a charitable place, a workhouse, a lodging place?  I wonder if anyone knows anything about it.
Thank you.

On his marriage certificate (1856 in Newcastle-on-Tyne to Hannah Smith) John Snaith's father appears as Francis Snaith, a husbandman.  John Snaith (abt 1823 -1907) is also identified as a husbandman.  I have found a Francis Snaith, married to Elizabeth Dryden and the father of several children, but John is not included.  I am wondering if there is another Francis Snaith married to an Elizabeth who could be John's father.  I have looked and looked but can't find another Francis Snaith.   I would be very grateful for any information you might have.
Thank you,
Barbara

« on: Monday 07 September 15 23:46 BST (UK)  »
Two people in my family tree worked on Tyneside, one as a capstan tenter and one as a ballast trimmer.  I am wondering exactly what they did.  The capstan tenter was 15 years old.
Thank you for any help!

Family History Beginners Board / railway cottages, south shields
« on: Monday 17 August 15 05:58 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather is listed on the census as living at 3 Railway Cottages, South Shields.  I saw an article researched by the Shields Gazette showing a picture of the Station Cottages in South Shields.  I wonder if anyone knows if these are one and the same?
