World War One / help please - Railway Companies 264th / 1914 Royal Engineers
« on: Sunday 16 August 20 21:14 BST (UK)  »
I have the following info,
George Henry Lafford B.1881 D.1926
Service no WR.265327 (incomplete)
Previously served with WR239416
Embarked Theatre War Diary Date from Date to 13.5.17 F & F
Railway Companies 264th Longmoor
WO 95/4054 4.17 - 11.18
Sapper 1914 Royal Engineers

Firstly I don't understand some of this info - why would he have different service nos & why would one be incomplete?
What is the WO number?
Where can I find records of the 264th railway company?

I have been able to get this info from ancestry, which also shows two docments in the "UK, WWI Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920" but there's not info on where he was, if he was injured, his entry card etc as i've found with other searches.
I'm looking for anything personal basically to him. Can anyone help please?

Staffordshire / Look up request please, Staffs
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 01:54 BST (UK)  »
I have Alfred George Lear born 1912 in Gnosall, Staffs.
His parents Alfred & Gertie (also a sister Gertie) lived there till the 1930's at least.
In the 1930's both his parents died and his sister was a domestic servant elsewhere, lots of info on them, but he seems to disapear.
My only link is the possibility this chap lived to a very old age and died just recently 2004 in Warwickshire. (Vague link suggestions and no real further info).

Also, would anyone have links to further info on Westwood sanatorium, Wordsley, and what it was in 1932, I suspect a TB hosp but can't find anything to confirm.

Many thanks

Stirlingshire / Royal Scottish National Hospital - larbet
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 15:56 BST (UK)  »
I've a relative (now deceased) who spent all of his life in the RSNH from the the age of 10.
I've contacted the archivist but as he entered just after the 100 year record bar, couldn't tell me anything.

I'd like to understand the layout/lifestyle at the hospital, from 1922-1987.
In his letters he gives his address (at different times) as the colony, and new block, and c/o matron. Do these different addresses/buildings give clues to what was happening for him? I'm wondering if c/o matron meant his mail was being monitored for some reason?
I understand there were buildings known as iona etc also. Does his not being there rule out some things?

Although I can find lots of generic pictures etc dates and names of those listed are often missing.
I'm finding a mixture of professionals saying what a wonderful place it was, and families of residents describing it as a hell on earth.

Hope someone can help, possibly a local who worked there or had family in the hospital?

Occupation Interests / Nursing register, Scotland circa 1960?
« on: Monday 13 June 16 23:39 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for more info on a relative who was a nurse, in Dunoon in the 60's
She was born in 1916 so i'm looking for nursing from 1936 to 1975 (when she would have been of retirement age).
There are local memories of her as a nurse in the 60's but otherwise i've nothing to go on for exact dates.

Her name is Vera Logan (married at 28 so possibly trained under her maiden name Cheetham)

I've found a few old threads about nursing registeres but i found the links dead so hope someone can help. Is there something online i can check to find her nursing credentials/training/employment?

Other Countries / Demerrara, British Guiana person trace - help please
« on: Sunday 12 June 16 23:34 BST (UK)  »
Re ERIC SCOTT NEWMAN LOGAN
BIRTH 10 SEPT 1919 • Demerrara, British Guiana
DEATH 10 DEC 1982 • Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland

I have good records for him from around 1947 onward but nothing before. And no parents.

I've been told FindMyPast (free search) shows what appears to be him going out to demerrara as a baby, but haven't been able to replicate/find the details myself to confirm.
I'm hoping someone more experienced might know where to look etc for info.
My big query is what took him to Dunoon but any info in his life pre 1947 would be apprecaited

If anyone could tell me what it is please, and also i'm assuming she knew she was dying for the few months before - does that seem in line with what the cause of death/certificate suggestion?

Many thanks

I'm not sure this is the correct place for this but i've noticed what i'm guessing to be a 2nd marriage on this death certificate, previously unknown. It would certainly explain some mysteries if that's what it is but i'm a newbie & don't want to assume.

Handwritting wise, i think it's margaret johnstone (with an E) but don't understand the small scribble to the top right of her name

info wise - am i right to assume this is a 2nd marriage (so has to have happened after his first) and that margaret had died leaving him a widower when he later died? (his first wife had died so i wasn't certain if that was where the widower came in or if it applied to both) his daughter, not his wife registered his death so i'm leaning toward margaret being dead but she could have just been grieving/infirm.

and lastly IF it is margaret johnstone - why can't I find any record of their marriage? (i've tried sp, astry, FindMyPast & nrscotland :(
IF it is a marriage after the first it would have to be 1931-1946 and i'd be expecting it in Dunoon, or possibly glasgow area...but really it could be anywhere!

Cork / 1911 cork census....missing street?
« on: Friday 27 May 16 19:49 BST (UK)  »
I've relatives showing on the 1901 cork (urban district 5) census at 1 ardfallen terrace, but when i try to find them in 1911 part of the street seems to have disappeared,  and so do my relatives :(

i'm interested in the cheetham/Cheatem, whiteside and murphy lines in 1901 and would expect to find the murphy still there in 1911 possibly with the addition of a different whiteside
i can find part of the street (the end i think) but not all of it and general searches shows all of it is there now, so i'm guessing it's just missing from the census?

can anyone help please?
