London and Middlesex / Where is Edward Skinner?
« on: Thursday 15 October 20 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am working backwards searching for records on Edward Skinner and have been unable to find him before his marriage. He died in 1870.

Born abt. 1838 and according to the 1861 census he was born in Bow, Middlesex. (In 1861 he was living in Woolwich and was a musician in the Royal Marines).

1859 - married Mary Ann Ketley in Woolwich. His father was listed as Thomas Ketley, a carpenter.

Please would someone be able to help me find him in 1851, 1841 and maybe a baptism? I have seen a couple of options but they do not have his father as baing a carpenter.

Thanks in advance :)

Europe / Help in Germany please
« on: Saturday 23 May 20 00:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Carolina Honig married Johann August Opfermann (otherwise Augustus John Opfermann) at St George's German Church in London on 29 June 1862.

Carolina was born around 1845 in Germany and her father was Johannes Honig.

Augustus was born around 1841 in Germany and his father was Johann Heinrich Opfermann.

Carlina and Augustus then feature on every UK census going forward, however never any more detail than 'Germany' on place of Birth.

Any advice on how to search for them in Germany would be greatly appreciated.  :)

Somerset / Untangling surname confusion - Hanney or Allen??
« on: Sunday 16 June 19 17:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching my GG Grandmoter, Fanny Radford however have got myself into a confusion with her parentage and am after some thoughts!

Fanny was born 5 March 1858 at Camden Place, Weston Super Mare. Her parents are listed on her birth certificate as Simon Radford (labourer b. 1817ish) and Eliza Radford formerly Hanney (b. 1817ish).

Simon and Eliza had nine children I am aware of:

Simon b. 1839
Elizabeth b. 1841
Caroline b. 1843
Robert b. 1847
Edward b. 1849
Hannah b. 1852
Matilda b. 1849
Fanny b. 1858
Lucy b. 1859

I have them through all census returns, baptism records etc.

However the confusion comes in following Simon Radford's death in 1864.

It looks to me as though Eliza remarries Levi Thomas 17 Dec 1870. One of the witnesses is Eliza's daughter Caroline who had married to become Caroline Elver. Connections also meet up on later census returns.

However, on the marriage certificate to Levi Thomas, Eliza's father is listed as John Allen and not John Hanney.

Any ideas for this discrepancy? I was sure I had everything right Hanney wise and now I can't see the woods for the trees.

Any ideas appreciated!

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Help needed - one person or two?
« on: Monday 02 March 15 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm stuck on some research and could do with some more opinions.

I am trying to research a Lewis Robert Rymer. I'll start with the only thing that I have as a definite fact:

I have his son's birth certificate from 1938 (not posting personal details) and the birth was registered in Woodford, Essex. Lewis Robert Rymer's occupation is given as Bulider's Labourer. Mother's maiden name is Gaylor and both have signed the informant section. As far as I can tell they never married.

The problem starts in that Lewis Rymer disappeared from that family's life around 1944. At the time the family were living in Scotland after having been evacuated due to the war.

Nothing is known by the family about what happened to Lewis Rymer after that date. I have not been able to locate a birth certificate.

I have two marriage certificates, one from 1930 and one for 1951 that are both for a Lewis Robert Rymer. The ages and fathers are different on each suggesting two completely different people, however I have a suspicion they may be the same. Mostly because the occupation is the same on each, and the second is exactly 10 years different in age (maybe he felt like knocking a few years off, maybe he never divorced the first time round).

I also have a death certificate from 1973, the age ties in with the 1930 marriage cert. In addition to this, I have a merchant seaman record from 1930 which confirms the date of birth on the death cert. However death certificate gives place of birth as Republic of Ireland and merchant seaman record gives it as Liverpool. And I still don't know if he is definitely the right person.

I can't find anything else further backwards, 1911 census etc that matches up with either marriage cert

There are a couple of stories that I've heard as well but don't want to get into too much detail to start off with.

Luckily enough it's an unusual name but I need to know if people think this is all the same person?

Any ideas on how I can go about unraveling this?  :)

World War One / WW1 death certificate - help needed
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 23:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have a copy of the death certificate for my great great uncle, Thomas Waite. I've attached a copy to this post. At the time of his death he was 2nd Btn Worcestershire Regiment.

Just got a couple of questions - firstly, under his service number is (2). Does this mean that he had another service number at some point? I am aware that he joined ASC as a baker in June 1915, not sure if that was different to where he ended up. If it does indicate another service record is there any guidance on how I would go about finding it?

Secondly, there is no exact date and the cause of death is listed as 'died on or since'. Other certificates I have for other relatives clearly state 'killed in action'. So does the one from Thomas indicate he was injured first, or died of an illness, or just that the fighting at that time was so chaotic that nobody knew what had happened? I've spent some time researching the 2nd Btn and the situation for them in April 1918 does sound like it could just be that nobody knew exactly.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Rachl

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / John William Hattersley - lookup
« on: Sunday 31 July 11 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Please would someone be able to help me find this man? The only info I have on him is from his marriage cert and I haven't been able to trace him based on any of those details.

His name was John William Hattersley - 34 at the time of his marriage which puts his date of birth at about 1880.

His marriage was on 15th Jan 1914 at Farnham Registry Office; he was living at the Corunna Barracks in Aldershot and was a Signaller in the Worcester Regiment.

His father was Henry Hattersley (deceased by time of marriage), a boiler maker.

I can't seem to find the right family in any census.

Thanks in advance,

Rachel

World War One / WW1 Service Record - help with deciphering!
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 16:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I hope that someone can help me understand the service record of Sgt Richard Rye - Royal Engineers. His service no. was 65053.

I have attached the two pages that I'm having the most problems understanding, not only the abbreviations used but also the handwriting they're written in! Any clarification would be appreciated as to what they mean?

On the 'Statement of Services' form I'm particularly interested in the line that seems to say gen hosp, I can't make out anything further but assume this means he was wounded/unwell?

I've done some research into the 130th Field Company RE which he was in - they were at the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917 and this is the date on the 'gen hosp' line, so is possible he was injured in the action there.

He then seems to have been 'Home' for a year before he was decided to be physically unfit for service, do you think it's safe to assume this would be due to injuries sustained?

Thanks in advance, I really struggle with these war records!  :)
