Lincolnshire / Freemen of Grimsby: Baileys
« on: Tuesday 03 May 16 13:06 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm which of my Baileys were Freemen , and how they became Freemen.

I can see names of enrolled 'Baileys' but would like to know if there are details held in the records about how they became Freemen - through their descent, or through apprenticeship.

I would be a freeman if I still lived in Grimsby , and I know my grandfather is on the list William Preston Bailey 2/10/1919,
his father is possibly Charles Bailey 23/08/1888,
and his father is possibly Thomas Burton Bailey on 18/07/1860,
and his father is possibly Thomas Bailey in 8/06/1826.

Now Thomas was born in Hull, so he could have apprenticed, or it is the wrong Thomas?

Can anyone help me find the details?

Many Thanks

John

Lincolnshire / Coffee House in Grimsby 1861Thomas Bailey b1801-
« on: Monday 02 May 16 20:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to join the dots on the life of my ancestor Thomas Bailey (b 1901 Hull). He appears in Grimsby census' from 1841 to 1881 , excluding 1871. His occupations have shown as:
Coffee House keeper and retired mariner (1851)
superannuated revenue officer (1861)
Revenue and Greenwich Pensioner (1881)

I have asked for help generally in the beginners section , but I hoped someone here may know about the Coffee House in Grimsby in 1851 - or where to point me for possible clues

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Which are the best records to try and find out about his life in the early c19?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

And who would have thought Grimsby would have a coffee house in 1851

Nottinghamshire / Annie Selby and Henry George Harwood married 1892, Nottingham
« on: Saturday 30 April 16 21:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the correct Annie Selby(b1872) , who would be my great grandmother.
The couple moved to Grimsby around 1900. They had two children , Albert , born in Nottingham in 1895, and my grandmother, Maud Lillian in 1901 in Grimsby. Annie Selby died in 1903,and Henry re married.
Most of the family trees show Annie to be from Cromwell , Notts , and her father is John (b1841), from Norwell. However, there are two more Annie Selbys around that time (b Nottingham and Bashford) with John as their Father!

As Henry George Harwood grew up in Nottingham (although born in Portsea 1870) , is seems to me much more likely that Annie Selby would have grown up in Nottingham as well.

Can anyone help unravel this a little?
Any help is gratefully received
John
