Ireland / Big thick brick wall - Margaret Dalzell Cooke
« on: Friday 28 June 13 23:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone - I'm struggling, really struggling, can anyone offer any advice?

Here's what I've got

Maggie Todd marries William Robert Cooke June 1910 in Belfast Ireland.

They have 4 children

Margaret Dalzell Cooke, Eveline Cooke (1913 - 1989), Agnes May Cooke (1913 - 1919), William Robert Cooke (1917 - 1994).

As you can see I've got some info on all but one of the children, Margaret D Cooke.

She was born in Ireland around 1911, moves to Glasgow and in 1941 marries James Hunter, but I can't find a birth or death for her.

I know she was still alive in the early 1970s (living in Scotland) but can't find a death cert for her.

Can anyone offer any pointers?

US Lookup Requests / Elizabeth, New Jersey - Probably

I'd be so very grateful if some one would help me look for anything on the Dewar Family.

They emigrated from Scotland to New Jersey in the 1920s.

I have found them on the 1930 census living in Madison Ave, Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, but I'd so love to have further info like death dates or marriage information of their daughter, if indeed she did marry.

From the 1930 census the family are, Peter 35yrs (on the census he's Petter), Kate 36yrs and Jean Dewar who is 13 yrs old.

I can't make out Peters occupation from the census form, its very crammed, looks like cup-something or other on the rail road.

Anyway I'd be so grateful of any help.

Thank you in advance.  :)

Scotland / Strugglin' a Bit
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 12:54 BST (UK)  »
and hoping someone might be able to help me out.

OK

I have James McEwan (18) marrying a Jane Gray (21) 18 Jan 1867 in Alloa Clackmannan.

So far I have found them and 4 of their children.

1. Baby McEwan b. 14.1 1868 - Trongate, Alloa (male, no first name stated)
2. John McEwan* b. 4.10.1871 - Old Bridge, Alloa
3. Jane McEwan b. 2.7.1874 - Trongate, Alloa
4. Marion McEwan b. 7.10.1878 - Old Bridge, Alloa

The only census I can find them on is 1891 again in Alloa.

I've had no luck finding them on the 1871 or 1881 census.

John McEwan* marries in 1897 in Edinburgh, but by the 1901 census they are back in Alloa with 2 boys, both born in Alloa.

My question is, where are the McEwans on the 1871 and 1881 census?

I've looked and looked, and can't find them, would some kind soul be able to check for me, as I very much doubt they went very far.

I think I may have the found the death certificate of my MILs mother.

All I know is she died while my MIL was young, which if this is correct would make my MIL about 4-5 at the time, of the death.

That would have left MILs dad with 3 young children to bring up - between the age of 2 and 8, and possibly another 2 boys born before their parents were married.

Which brings me to my musings - it's unlikely that the children would have remained with their father, isn't it?

I don't know if they were sent to live with someone else, or put into care.

I need to send away for the death cert for Mary Martin and check that first of all.

What would be your thoughts on what happened to the children?

If they were put into care it would have been in the Liverpool area - so I'll get reading.

Lancashire / Census Question

I've found a child who matches the criteria I'm looking for on the 1901 census.

She's only 4 and is stated as the head of the house holds niece - except I can't see who else is in the house hold because its on the previous page.

She's at the top of the next page on her own before it goes on to the next house hold.

How do I get to see the previous page?

Thanks in advance.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / I'm Back -

with another mystery!!

Following all the help from you guys a week or so ago, I ordered and received the certs I wanted.

I ordered a death cert for Caroline Martin, thinking it would verify her maiden name for me but it didn't  ::), so I'll have to order her sons birth cert, that should give it to me - am I right?

Anyway - there was a marriage cert for Caroline Maud Rapson to William Martin which I got and it would seem, as suspected, Caroline and her sister Ann Jane had a double wedding.

Ann Jane married a William Mainwaring - now try as I might I cant find them on the 1901 census. I've also had a look for deaths and found nothing either.

Is there anyone out there who would be able and willing to check ship passenger lists for me?

I'd be very grateful of any pointers to check just incase I've missed the blinkin' obvious.

Thanks in advance

Scotland / More Recent Wills
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 16:02 BST (UK)  »
Is is possible to see a recent Scottish will?

Recent as in 1980s. I have a feeling there may be a "clue" in the will of a cousin of my mums.

I'd love to know if its possible to see the will for myself.

When you use the LDS site and do an IGI search some names come up with sort of brackets ie <Miss Poohs>.

What do the < and > mean?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / I Need Advice
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 17:08 BST (UK)  »
Here in Scotland its possible to go to a records centre and trawl the birth, marriages and deaths.

Is there a similar place in Liverpool for the records of that area.

I've tried long and weary to get a handle on my MILs family and I can't, so my next step is to visit in person.

I only have her birth cert, her parents marriage cert and I've found her father in the 1901 census.

They all appear to be in the Toxteth Park area or Walton on the Hill.

Hope some one can advise.

Janice
