Northumberland / Looking for a marriage and identity
« on: Wednesday 22 May 24 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking for a marriage between a William Johnson, baptised in South Shields on the 4th December 1845, father William and mother, Isabella Gibson.

He may have married his wife, Elizabeth, around 1870.
Elizabeth had been born in Holywell, Northumberland around 1852/1853

The 1871 census finds the pair living in Pittingdon, Durham, with a son, William, who had been born in Backworth, Northumberland during the December quarter of 1870 (mother's maiden name 'Turner')
The only marriage I can find is one that took place in Sunderland on the 29th March 1871 (William Johnson and Elizabeth Turner, but it looks as though her former name was Hodgson).

Another son, Benjamin was born in Washington, Durham during the March quarter of 1873, Matthew, was born during the June quarter of 1875, and Sarah was born in Percy Main, Northumberland during the June quarter of 1878 (all mother's maiden names given as 'Turner')
The 1881 census - living in Whitley, Tynemouth
Thomas was born during the June quarter of 1881, Alexander, was born during the December quarter of 1884, and Benjamin, was born during the June quarter of 1889 (all mother's maiden name given as 'Turner')
The 1891 census - living in Cowpen, Tynemouth
The 1901 census - living in Bebside Furnace, Horton, Tynemouth
Elizabeth dies prior to 1911

From the birth registrations of all their children, it would seem as though Elizabeth's maiden name was Turner...can anybody confirm or trace her?
Thanks
Sue

Durham / A marriage between William Unsworth and Jane ???
« on: Thursday 02 May 24 16:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Trying to trace a marriage between a William Unsworth and his wife, Jane.
Their first child appears to be John, baptised in Hartlepool on the 2nd November 1817
His birth was followed by those of;
Thomas, baptised in Hartlepool on the 30th May 1819
Jane, baptised in Hartlepool on the 4th October 1821
Ann, baptised in Sunderland on the 3rd February 1825.

The family can be found, still in Sunderland on the 1841 census, living in Johnson Street, where William was employed as a weaver.
He was born 'out of county' but all the other members were born in the county of Durham.

Both he and Jane's approx year of birth was given as being 1791.

Daughter, Jane, married James Middlehurst in St Michael & All Angels, Sunderland in 1845, confirming her father's name as William Unsworth.

Can anyone trace a marriage?? Or find them in 1851?

Thanks in advance

Sue

Mayo / Cleary Family from Mayo
« on: Monday 08 April 24 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Just looking for some advice on finding any information on a Patrick Cleary, born in Lettermaghera, Newport, County Mayo on the 30th April 1872.
His parents were John Cleary and Mary Kilroy who had married on the 9th February 1866.
John was 30 years old, and named his father as Dominick Cleary, and Mary was 20 years old and named her father as Michael Kilroy.

Patrick's siblings - Mary, born on the 24th March 1867, Michael, born on the 25th September 1868, John, born on the 26th April 1870, Dominick born and died in 1876, and possibly another sister, Mary, born on the 23rd September 1877.

I know that Michael emigrated to Ohio and Patrick came over to England.

However, because of the lack of Irish census returns prior to 1901 - I'm not sure what happened to the family during the latter part of the 19th century.

In particular, we believe that the family had connections with the TreanLaur Hunting Lodge in Mayo, one of Patrick's daughters, Mary, born in Hull in 1903, gave that name to her house, but haven't found any evidence of how.

I think John Cleary (Patrick's father) may have died in 1923 - John Cleary born c1837 died in Westport, Mayo September quarter, aged 86 years.
Mary Cleary born c 1846 (nee Kilroy) may have died either 1921 or 1922 in either Claremorris, Mayo, 1921, aged 75 years, or in Westport, Mayo in 1922, aged 75 years.
However, if this was the case, why can't I trace them in 1901 or 1911?  ??? ???

Any assistance gratefully accepted!!

Sue

Durham / Patrick Cleary and his entire family
« on: Saturday 06 April 24 14:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone trace this person and his family before and after 1891?
Patrick Cleary - born County Mayo, Ireland c1860
Mary Cleary - born York, Yorkshire c1856
Children;
Michael born Thornley, Durham c 1877
Anthony born Willington, Durham c1881
Mary M born Willington, Durham c1884
Thomas born Willington, Durham c 1886
Ann born Willington, Durham c1888
Patrick born Willington, Durham c1890

The 1891 census finds the family living in 29 High Street, Willington where Patrick was a coke drawer.
With them was a 'nephew' Patrick Cleary, also from Mayo, ireland who was 19 years of age.
I believe that he was the son of John Cleary and his wife, Mary Kilroy who had married in Newport, Mayo on the 9th February 1866.
Patrick (1872) stayed in England, marrying Mary Ann O'Neil in Hull in 1902 - the 1939 register giving his date of birth as 30th April 1872, which matches his birth certificate, naming his parents as John and Mary.

John's father was Dominick Cleary born c1797 (died 1883 aged 86 years), and his mother was Ellen, (also died 1883, aged 88 years), so I can't believe that Patrick (1860), was Patrick's (1872) uncle.

Can anyone trace this family in 1881 or even 1901 and 1911?

Thanks

Sue

Durham / Mysterious Eliza Jane Burns/Butler
« on: Saturday 09 March 24 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Looking to confirm the parents of James Edward Tulloch, born in Sunderland on the 10th April 1916 (mother's maiden name is 'Burns', and his brother, Thomas, born in Sunderland on the 16th September 1917, (mother's maiden name given as 'Burns.')

No record of a Tulloch/Burns marriage in Sunderland (or anywhere that I can see), however, the 1921 census (I just have very limited access), appear to find the family living in Southwick.
Both James and Thomas are given the correct year of birth (no place of birth listed), and they are listed with 'parents' James W Tulloch born 1875 Sunderland, and Elisa (Eliza) Jane born 1884 (no place of birth given).

Cannot find the family in 1939, but their son, James Edward, married Ivy Simpson in Sunderland in 1940.

James W Tulloch appears to have married Eliza J Butler in Sunderland in 1915, but both the boys mother's maiden name is definitely given as 'Burns.'
James W Tulloch is easy to trace backwards - surname spelt as 'Tullock' but who was Eliza Jane Burns/Butler?

Thanks
Sue

Durham / William Clifford Hare
« on: Friday 23 February 24 15:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Trying to find out what happened to this man after he married and where he may have died.
William Clifford Hare was born in Thirsk during the December quarter of 1898 (parents Richard Lockey Hare and Maud Robinson.)

He married Betsy Honeyman in East Boldon on the 21st August 1924 (the family were living there at the time, and remained there).
Betsy had been born in Sunderland on the 2nd September 1900, the daughter of George Honeyman and his wife, Agnes Milne.
The couple had two known children, Thelma Margaret, born in Sunderland on the 28th August 1925, and Raymond, born in Middlesbrough during the June quarter of 1931.

William Clifford is mentioned on his brother, Wilfred Reginald's, probate record (he died at sea in 1943), as being a radio dealer.'

But can't trace William, Betsy, Thelma or Raymond in 1939 - of any trace of them afterwards.

Can anybody find them?

Thanks
Sue

Northumberland / James Brown (unfortunately)
« on: Tuesday 13 February 24 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Looking for the baptism of James Brown born c 1834 in Northumberland; he is a bit vague about exactly were but the 1861 census has it as Stamford, the 1871 as Northumberland, the 1881 as Stamford, the 1891, completely inaccurately as Cornwall, and the 1901 as 'Swind', Northumberland.
These places were taken from census returns after he married; he did so at Longframlington on the 21st February 1857 to Margaret Faill of Framlington; his abode was given as Hedley Wood. This was taken from the Newcastle Journal, dated 28th February 1857.

They did move around quite a bit in 1861 he was in Thropton, near Rothbury, 1871, he was in North Seaton, near Morpeth, 1881, he was in East Pontop, near Kyo, Durham and in 1891 and 1901 he was in Wingate and Dipton respectively.

I can't trace him with any certainty in 1841 or 1851, but I know that Stamford is near Alnwick, which hasnt helped!
Can anyone trace him?

Thanks
Sue

Northumberland / Ierdale
« on: Friday 09 February 24 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for Jane Ann Ierdale who married George Brown in Newcastle during the March quarter of 1883.
They had one child, Sarah, born during the December quarter of 1891 (possibly on the 17th December); she is the only registered Brown/Ierdale birth.

But just cannot find Jane at all prior to her marriage - I can find a William Ierdale, born in Newcastle around 1852 (but only on the 1871 census). I'm presuming he may be a brother of Jane.
But no other sign!
Can anyone help!

Much appreciated
Sue
