Renfrewshire / Margaret McCormick from Shaws Parish, Eastwood Renfrewshire,
« on: Saturday 04 September 10 09:35 BST (UK)  »
Found a marriage for my ancestor Margaret McCormick from Shaws Parish,Eastwood,  Renfrewshire where she married someone with the surname McNally/McAnally. I found a marriage in a catholic church in Glasgow in 1835. I presume she died before the 1851 census as her husband was remarried in 1851. Her youngest son was born in October 1842.

I'm looking for any help regarding her early life in Shaws Parish or any details about her family. The witnesses at her wedding were Peter and Anne McCormick however I don't know how they were related.

Derry (Londonderry) / McNally family from Maghera, Derry
« on: Saturday 04 September 10 07:47 BST (UK)  »
I finally know where my McNally ancestor came from in Ireland - his Scottish marriage says it's Maghera, Derry. I was wondering what else I can find out about him and his family in Ireland.

He was born about 1808-1811 (not sure exactly). His parents were Francis McNally and Martha. David appears to be Catholic. I'm not sure when he left ireland but he was married (possibly for the second time) in Glasgow in 1835 but I think he had a child in Scotland with possibly his first wife in 1833.

I was wondering what records/evidence exists for Maghera for that period eg catholic church records, gravestones etc etc

Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Lancashire / 1811 census Wigan
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know whether the 1811 census for Wigan (the part that survived) is fully online? I've seen an online copy which has many of the occupations etc ommited from the transcription but I think that copy was from 2002.

I've a few ancestors with common names so details of occupations would be useful    as it may confirm or rule them out.

Many thanks :)

Lancashire / St Thomas the Martyr, Upholland Monumental Inscriptions?
« on: Sunday 16 May 10 15:08 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are any Monumental Inscriptions for St Thomas in Upholland?

I found the following record on Lancashire OPR, isn't that site great? :) After all these years I think I may have found my Mary Brown nee Topping's burial.

Burial: 29 Oct 1876 St Thomas the Martyr, Upholland, Lancashire, England
Mary Brown -
    Age: 61
    Abode: Orrell
    Register: Burials 1861 - 1877, Page 381, Entry 3041
    Source: LDS Film 1657555

I was just wondering whether there may be a gravestone or a Monumental Inscription for her?

Many thanks

Also looking for any monumental inscription/burial for Ann(e) Blunt.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Lancashire / Any experts on history of Wigan weaving ?
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 21:29 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors was a weaver in Wigan. He was born about 1780.

What kind of weaver would he have likely have been before the turn of the century ie 1800?

Many thanks

Cumberland / Help Required with Whitehaven Parish & other Records re Ellis Family
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 23:43 BST (UK)  »
I'd appreciate any help with the following family who were born and Christened in Whitehaven.
(the family came from London and were eventually living in Liverpool & some in London)

Thomas Ellis b.abt 1759 London & Sarah Waylat b.abt 1767 Surrey (married in London) had the following children:

Elizabeth Ann Ellis born about 1790 in Cumberland
William Joseph Ellis christened 12 March 1795 Holy Trinity Whitehaven
Joseph John Ellis chr. 11 June 1798 Holy Trinity Whitehaven died 29 July 1801
George Henry Ellis  chr 4 April 1800 St Bees, Whitehavem
Ann Kirkby Ellis chr 9 June 1803, St Bees Whitehaven
Sarah Ellis born about 1805 Cumberland?
Caroline/Caraline Waylat Ellis chr 30 August 1808 St Nicholas Whitehaven
Jane Jones Ellis chr 30 August 1808 St Nicholas Whitehaven

I'm particularly interested in Jane Jones Ellis as she was my ancestor.

I was wondering how to get hold of copies of these christenings from Whitehaven, would I need reference numbers and does anyone know the cost? Where would I send the request?
Are the parish records likely to give me any more detail such as address and father's occupation?

Also how would I get copies of the burial record for young Joseph John Ellis  who died at Holy Trinity? What would it tell me? Are there any MI for Holy Trinity?

Also, would all of these churches be CofE?  Just wonder why the children seem to be christened in different churches.

One of the census records show Sarah Ellis nee Waylat as being the widow of a customs officer so I assume it was Thomas who was the custom's officer. I'm not sure when he died or when exactly they moved  out of Whitehaven? Would Thomas be listed on a street directory of the area?

Apologies, I'm even more of an amateur when it comes to Whitehaven than other areas. I don't seem to have got very further than the familysearch.org site and know very little about the area.

Lancashire / Liverpool Catholic Schools 1840/1850s
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 22:31 BST (UK)  »
I have some catholic ancestors who lived in Naylor Street in Liverpool in the 1840s/50s.

I was wondering where their children would go to school and what sort of education (if any) they would experience?

Would there be schools especially for Catholic children? Would they have any local schools nearby that they could attend?

NB When their father died, he was buried in St Anthonys which I believe is the Scotland Road area, however I don't know much about that area or whether it is close to Naylor Street.

I think I need to find a map (actually I do have an 1851 & indeed other maps but am struggling as the writing is so small and I have no idea where I'm looking)

Many thanks

Edit: Thank you - I now know where Naylor Street is & St Anthonys :)
