London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Dean and Plass in 1861 census
« on: Tuesday 25 September 18 21:08 BST (UK)  »
Ellen Elizabeth Dean and Augustus Frederick Plass married in 1860, giving their residences as Ebury Street (Pimlico/Belgravia area). Mrs Dean (mother of Ellen) was still living at 60 Ebury Street in 1871.

I have searched via Find My Past and Ancestry for both of them, and their families, and come up with nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might find Ebury Street in the 1861 census (to browse the residents) or any ideas on how to find them. Is much of the 1861 census missing? I've not come across this issue before, but I know some census years have gaps.

Thank you!
Kath

Glamorganshire / Margaret Ann DAVIES
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 00:56 GMT (UK)  »
My great-great grandmother was Margaret Ann Davies. This has been a brick wall for 18 years now - please help!

Here's what I know about her:
Born - 13 May 1883 (source: 1939 register)
Father - John Davies (from marriage certificate)
Place of birth - Blaenrhondda (from 1911 census, and also 1901 census)
Died Jul-Sep 1949 (age 66)

In 1901 I think she was working in Ferndale as a servant (age 17). She married William Henry Rowley in Ferndale in 1902, so this makes sense. In 1911 her age is stated as 28, though I'm hoping this is an error, as she wouldn't have been 28 until May if the birth date I have for her is correct...

I have scoured the 1891 census, but cannot find a definite match, and can't find any baptism records.

I think I've narrowed it down to 4 possible matches for births in the Apr-Jun quarter of 1883:
Merthyr Tydfil 11a 509
Pontypridd 11a 364
Pontypridd 11a 395
Merthyr Tydfil 11a 536
(assuming they registered her birth promptly...)

Does anyone have any suggestions other than ordering one at a time and keeping fingers crossed please?!

Thanks  :)
Katherine

The Common Room / 1939 Register
« on: Thursday 18 January 18 22:38 GMT (UK)  »
Today I signed up with Find My Past as I noticed they have a new subscription which lets you see the 1939 register. I looked up my first family (my grandfather) and noticed his sisters' names have been changed to their married names. They didn't marry until a few years later, so how, when and why was the register updated? Has anyone else found this?

Family History Beginners Board / Ordering marriage certificates
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 10:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have been round and round the GRO website trying to order a marriage certificate from 1866: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Unfortunately they're not included in the £6 offer, but I can't see how to order them at the usual £9.25 price either!

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Brighton Street in 1841
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone read the street name on this 1841 census please?

It's quite unusual to have had the street name noted, but I cannot work it out! My gx5 grandparents Friend and Elizabeth Paine are living at no.2. I think it's central Brighton in The Lanes area if that helps - later on they lived on Meeting House Lane and Poplar Place.

Thanks,
Katherine

New Zealand Completed Requests / DEAN family
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 21:29 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather's uncle, aunt and cousins emigrated to New Zealand in the 1920s. They departed from Southampton on Sep 25th 1924 on the Remeura and arrived in Wellington. I'd love to know what happened to them after they arrived as I don't believe they returned to the UK.

Sidney William Dean (b.23 Aug 1869, an architect)
Nellie Dean (b.1872 nee Wilkinson)
Kathleen Peggy Dean (b.15 Jul 1909)
Joan Margery Dean (b.8 Jul 1911)

They also had an older daughter, Dorothy Mabel Dean, who had previously moved to New Zealand (1914) with her husband Lionel Edwin Austin Rolph (b.1892, a farmer), and I believe he lost his life in WW1.

Does anyone have a connection to these people? Or could anyone point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks,
Katherine  :)
