Family History Beginners Board / Nobody Lives Forever
« on: Monday 10 June 19 13:06 BST (UK)  »
My GGGrandfather was Elias Morrell, b. Manchester 1844, he married Elizabeth Smith from Liverpool b1842. They married in Liverpool in 1864 and had 5 children, the last Edward Shepherd Morrell b1872 being my GGrandfather. I can find no trace of either Elias' death or Elizabeth, they seem to have disappeared after 1871. The 1871 census has a record but it shows Elias as being born in 1833 and from Derbyshire, Elizabeth is there with all the children bar one all correct.
I have 1851 census, Elias living with parents, aged 6, in Manchester.
Elias pops up, I think, in 1886, at his daughters wedding in Birkenhead, Anne Jane Morrell to James Cardus...but I believe that does not mean he was there in person.
Its the deaths of Elias and Elizabeth that is puzzling? Don't think they emigrated...
All brainwaves greatly appreciated as ever.

Family History Beginners Board / Steamy Edmonton

In an attempt to track down a relative I decided to look at her siblings and see if she turned up there etc. Emma Sarah Coomes b1839 in Stepney, married a William Haszell in 1858, she had several siblings, one of them was Alfred Coomes b1844 in Stepney.
Alfred married a Lizzett Kate Castle in 1864 in Stepney, they had a child Florence Emma in 1870. That's where I got a bit lost and then found something which has amused and bewildered me. In the 1871 census Lizzie and Florence are living with a James Faint in Cheshunt, no sign of Alfred. The 1881 census then lists Lizzie as 'Paramour', Florence and 3 further offspring as Illegitimate! Lizzie obviously bored with Alfred, has affair and gets pregnant with Florence and then moves in.
Is Paramour an official label or just the prejudice of the census officer?
Don't know what happened to Alfred Coomes, can't find a death or another marriage as yet.

Other Countries / Records for India
« on: Saturday 29 September 18 18:47 BST (UK)  »
I've discovered a family connection with India in the 1850s and beyond.
He was Walter William Jiggins, born in Orsett Essex 1859 but married twice in India, had a host of children and died out there in 1906. Buried in Bombay. The wives families all appear to be born there also, this is very intriguing. Are there any pointers to searching for these people, I can't figure if they were army people or civil service. One chap, a Josiah William Ballard, one of Walters wives father appears to have married twice too, once to a Matilda Phanre in 1876, an Indian woman...I think, and again in 1885 to a Laura Catley. Kids everywhere!

Any help as ever, greatly appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Augustine Mysterys
« on: Wednesday 22 August 18 13:29 BST (UK)  »
Researching my grandmothers side and got back to Patsy and Bridget Jennings 1851 census, Keighley in Yorkshire. They were my grandmothers great grandparents. GRO does well with their children until the last one, Agustine Jennings registered M quarter in 1859 Keighley, so born late 1858. Census 1871 revealed Austin(sic) living with mum, now a widow in Bradford. Spelling bad here and some dates but...
1881 census no sign but he pops up as Augustine Jennings b.1858, married Mary Birmingham in 1883 and then:
1891 census, Augustine Jennings, Sheffield with Mary and first 4 kids born in Derby.
1901 census, Augustine Jennings, Sheffield with Mary and another child born in Sheffield, Augustine
1911 census, Augustine Jennings, Sheffield with Mary and three of their children.
He then dies, 1921 in Sheffield, Eccleshall.
It seemed to fit so well, but then I noticed his birth place is Ireland, Rosscommon, on all three census. He has a brother Thomas staying on 1891 census, also from Ireland. SO this can't be my Augustine Jennings born Keighley 1858/59.
There can't be two but there must be, no sign of my Keighley Augustine...dead or otherwise, just this Irish born Augustine haunting me.
Any one got any clues? Its got me stumped. Is it just one Augustine? Two? The Trinity?

Family History Beginners Board / Middle name 'Shepherd'
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 17:22 BST (UK)  »
My mums dad was called Edward Shepherd Morrell, as was his dad and his dad before him. They originally came from South Derbyshire and it seems to be a family tradition that all the first born boys were called Edward Shepherd, there are dozens of them.
Is it a religious thing, a Derbyshire thing, family etc. Besides the obvious does anyone know where this may stem from.
The family still does it now, my cousin Edward Shepherd has a son called Edward Shepherd etc.

Family History Beginners Board / Liverpool Census 1861
« on: Saturday 30 June 18 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I have been tracing a relative from Liverpool who eventually married and died in Chester. She was born in Liverpool in 1858, Winefred Walsh to a Martin Walsh and Ann Neven. I have her birth certificate, she was born in the slum courts of Adisson St. in Vauxhall. I can find no sign of her in the 1861 census nor the 1871 census, no sign of her parents either.

Winifred next appears as marrying a Patrick McNally in Chester, 1878. I have her marriage certificate, her dad is Martin Walsh but deceased, a Patrick Walsh is witness...uncle.? She then appears in 1881 census, 1891 census with a growing family and then dies in the slum courts of Chester in 1896 of a brain hemorrhage, I have her death certificate. She loses two kids as well and after her death and burial as a pauper, the remaining three girls end up in the workhouse in Chester and then an orphanage. Patrick dumped them and married again, an unpleasant character we think! He appears in the newspaper of the time on numerous occasions fighting and drinking and berating crowds about Fenianism!

We know a lot about her and where she lived in Chester but the gap from her birth in 1858 to her marriage in 1878 is a mystery. She seems to have had a dreadful life after marriage and the census of 1861 and 1871 give us no clues to her early life. I know the painful history of the Vauxhall slums, I live in Liverpool, but is the 1861 census complete? I can only assume she ended up in a childrens home somehow as they sprung up about this time because of the Irish diaspora and cholera etc. Hard and difficult times in Liverpool, we are keen to find where she grew up.

Wondered if anyone has had similar experience and had any pointers or advice.

Family History Beginners Board / The Haszells...Again
« on: Friday 01 June 18 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Everytime I sit down and try to do a bit more on my Dads family I always get a dead end with this branch, the Haszells from Ipswich. I have posted about them before. This time its about the son of Wiiliam Samuel Haszell b.1859 Ipswich, and Elizabeth b.1858 in Chelsea, MMN Mingay. Their son was born William James Haszell in London 1880. He appears on 1881 census as Hassell, family living with in-laws, then again on 1891 census as Haszell. Then that's the end of him, there seems so many variations of his surname but no William James Haszell past 1891. I've searched deaths, marriages etc with all the variations that have been used by the Haszells, from Hassell to Hasquel to Haygell to Hazel...all to no conclusion.
The parents William and Elizabeth don't appear to have had any further children and they appear together doing nicely in a Chelsea address as hairdressers in 1901. No son, just on their own. I realise that their are dead ends in this game, have I reached one with William? Any magical RootsChat insight gratefully received as ever.

Family History Beginners Board / Emma Haszell
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 23:04 BST (UK)  »
I have posted about this family, my family, before but I am really stuck and need some advice or a pointer. Also how do people cope with the number of spelling variations on one name...HASZELL...quite staggering the ways I have seen it spelled, anyway.

Emma Sarah Coomes b.1840 married in Holborn 1858, William Haszell b1834, my ancestor. I have an 1861 census where they are living together in Waltham Cross with their two sons William and James my great grandfather. Then, nothing...the boys are then living with Williams parents in 1871, William is a boarder in London looking for work and Emma...no sign at all. I feel a touch attached to Emma and wonder what happened to her. I cant find her death, workhouse, remarried, emigrated,,, I've tried all sorts but can find no trace of her, Its like she's disappeared!

I have lots of stuff around the other Haszells and their ups and downs and have a real good picture of the family but I really would like to know what happened to Emma, married at 18, two kids at 21 and then...gone! Spelling asides she can't have just disappeared. I need to dot the i's here and cross the t's! What happened to Emma Haszell? She is a mystery and an obsession at the moment.

Can anyone help?

Family History Beginners Board / Bigamy or is it Trigamy?
« on: Saturday 31 March 18 18:14 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking at a certain branch of this dis-organised family and I've now come across a Joseph who seems to be married three times!
Joseph Haszell b.1839 in Ipswich, moves to London and then:

marriage 1:   1863   East London, London, Joseph Haszell to Fanny Taylor but he never lived with her as she stays with her father.

marriage 2:       1866   Shoreditch, London, Ann Huggins to Joseph Haszell

marriage 3:   1868   Chelmsford, Essex, to Deborah Green. I think the census shows he lived with her.

I'm sure its the same Joseph Haszell, could you get divorced so easily then? I am really confused with this one, do I need to order all three certificates. Any advice as ever greatly appreciated.
