I have found a pension record I believe is for my gg grandfather Charles Henning and I understand that I can order copies of the application file from the National Archives website. However I am unsure as to whether or not the pension record is based on Federal military service rather than state or confererate.
This is the link to the document I have found:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDYY-QT6Also Charles would have been 58 years old at the time of the invalid date on the pension record, is that too old to have served, or is this record for another Charles Henning with a wife Anna M Henning?
I would be very grateful for some guidance before I part with any money as the fee's are quite high.
NB: Seems the 32nd Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry regiment disbanded in 1865. My Charles Henning emigrated to the US sometime between 1861-1863 and was not naturalized until 1868. Is it likely he could have been a volunteer, would they have accepted non US citizens?
