Armed Forces / Help with Service Record Notes WW2
« on: Today at 12:19 »

I'm looking at grandad's WW2 service record in the Royal Engineers and see that there are several repeated mentions of being listed on X11 and X1V list - for curiosity, any ideas what these are please?

Wiltshire / Sarah Ann Edwards - missing
« on: Sunday 26 May 24 14:31 BST (UK)  »

Hi, Sarah Ann Edwards, born to Eliza Edwards at Hannington, Wiltshire in 1840 is with Edwards grandparents Henry and Sarah in the 1841 and 1851 census but is missing from that point onwards.  What happened to her?  Haven't found a marriage nor a burial nor in later census.  Some of her Edwards family stayed put, some scattered - London, Oxfordshire, Hillingdon and Somerset so this feels like a needle in a haystack but if someone with eagle eyes can help I'd be very grateful ;D

London and Middlesex / Davisons - Chelsea?
« on: Wednesday 15 May 24 12:21 BST (UK)  »

If you have the Davison name from the Chelsea area in your tree and have had a DNA test would you PM me please?

I know this ought to be in the DNA section but hope to capture a wider audience.  Thank you.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry Compare DNA Communities
« on: Wednesday 15 May 24 12:16 BST (UK)  »

Is this in anyway useful for identifying connections please?  Forgive my ignorance.  I have a handful of people who are shared mystery matches and all come under the Devon and Cornwall community box but none of them have those areas in their trees.  In fact one match has a totally eastern european tree hence my confusion.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Samuel Vincent and Jane Mortimer
« on: Thursday 02 May 24 10:06 BST (UK)  »

In 1857 Samuel Vincent and Jane Mortimer baptised a son, Samuel Joseph James Vincent on Guernsey, probably St Peter Port.  Mother and child are still there in 1861 and Jane is a washerwoman from England and calling herself Vincent.  No sign of Samuel snr nor a marriage - can anyone help please? No other details to offer other than SJJ had returned to England by 1881.

Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / 1960s Education Records
« on: Sunday 28 April 24 12:18 BST (UK)  »

Is it possible to access school/education records for the 1960s and 1970s?  If they exist would they be with the local authority or elsewhere?

Thank you.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Mystery Match - Pointers Please
« on: Saturday 27 April 24 15:58 BST (UK)  »

My biggest Ancestry match is also my biggest mystery so if I can give you the basics could you more experienced and wiser folk point me in the right direction to continue digging please?

My biggest Ancestry match is 432cM across 6 segments, assigned to both sides, and is described by Ancestry as a 1-2nd cousin.  We share 29 other matches - all assigned to my paternal side - of between 167-21cMs.  I can't identify any of these matches either having checked and extended if possible all trees.  They are all mysteries.

I tried contacting the 167cM match without reply and of course he has no tree.  Ancestry suggest he's a 2-3rd cousin and is on my paternal side.  I've no clue as to who he is, where or when he was born so can't chase him via the records.

Going back to the main match - she has a small tree that I've extended by several generations but there's no obvious connection but we do have family in the same town around the same time. This would bring us to her 2xgreat grandmother bearing my ancestor's child (likely candidate g-g-great uncle).  Would this sound about right/possible?  The relationship isn't official so no documentary evidence but am I on the right track?

I've tried contacting my match but had no response.  I can't explain'both sides' as it was pure chance my parents met so with all other shared matches pointing solely to my paternal side, is it important?

Any ideas or explanations gratefully received.  Thank you.

Armed Forces / Courts Martial
« on: Monday 22 April 24 12:53 BST (UK)  »

I have a relative who did national service 1948-53-ish and was put on charge several times resulting in a courts martial and a stay in military prison.  I know all this from the service record but it's bare bones, no detail.  I'd like to know more but is there likely to be surviving documents to search for?  And if so, where do I begin?  Thank you.

London and Middlesex / Missing from 1891 census
« on: Sunday 21 April 24 13:56 BST (UK)  »

Hi, can anyone with eagle eyes find Catherine Eliza Riley on the 1891 census please?

Catherine was born first quarter 1887 in Chelsea, Middx.  In 1891 her widowed father, William, and brother James are in Cale Street, Chelsea in the home of James Booker, Catherine's uncle.  I've checked on other relatives both maternal and paternal sides and can't find her.  She hadn't died as she's in the 1901 census with her Davison relatives and the 1911 census with William.

With fingers crossed, thank you ;D
