Ireland / My Carroll Family
« on: Tuesday 15 March 22 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
My Carroll g g grandparents, Thomas Carroll and Ellen Hobourne (spelling varies) were married in 1843 in St Chads Cathedral Birmingham and census records show them being born in Ireland but no more details, Thomas in about 1817 and Ellen in 1822. Their marriage certificate shows his father as Loughlin Carroll a labourer and Ellen's father as Andrew Hobourne a shoemaker.

I started looking on the Surrey forum  - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=859755.msg7287896#msg7287896  but was advised that this Irish forum was more appropriate.

Can anyone point me in any direction towards getting further back with my family?

Ireland / Hickey Family
« on: Tuesday 15 March 22 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
My Hickey, g grandfather, John Hickey was born (1836) and lived in Lambeth Surrey. His parents, according to his baptism record from St George's Catholic Church, Southwark, Surrey, were John Hickey and Catherine Riley and census records show that they were both born in Ireland, both in about 1811, but gives no more detail. I cannot find a marriage in England but have found an original record on the National Library of Ireland website showing a John Hickey and what looks like Kitty Reilly married on 1st March 1835 at Hospital and Herbertstown, Limerick.

Surrey / Hickey marriage
« on: Sunday 06 March 22 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
My g.g. grandfather was John Hickey who according to the 1841 census was born in Ireland in about 1811. In 1841 he was living in Lambeth Surrey.
He had at least 3 children, the first my g grandfather, also John, was according to his baptism records from St George's Cathedral, Southwark born in 1836.
The baptism records helpfully show his mother as Catherine Riley.
I have been looking for a marriage record for John Hickey and Catherine Riley for around 1830 to 1836 in the Southwark area and more recently in Ireland but without any idea of place it has been fruitless. It is possible that they were not married but being Catholic I think this unlikely.
I am hoping that a marriage record might take me back a further generation and also give me a place in Ireland.
That is a lot of hoping I know, I have 2 sets of g g grandparents born in Ireland without any idea of where.
Any ideas?

Thank you

Bedfordshire / Saunders / Clark of Clifton
« on: Friday 15 October 21 18:22 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could offer any advice.

I have James William Clark marrying Selina Saunders in 1882 in Clifton.

In the 1881 census I have James Saunders and wife Caroline nee Hollingsworth, Selina's parents, with family including Emily Saunders bn 1879 in Clifton and Ruth Saunders bn 1880 in Clifton both as granddaughters.

In 1891 census I have James William Clark & wife Selina nee Saunders living in Islington with family including Emily Clark bn 1880 in Clifton as daughter.

I have a death for a Ruth Saunders in Islington in 1883.

On the GRO birth index Emily has no surname but Ruth shows Hollingsworth.

I may be making an assumption but I think that both Emily and Ruth are daughters of James William Clark and Selina Saunders before they were married.

Would anyone like to make comment?

It does not affect my direct line but I expect, like me, people like to tie up loose ends.

Just to make it more of a mystery I was told by an elderly relative, long since gone, that James William Clark and Selina, nee Saunders, had another daughter named Nancy who disappeared from the family, never to return, after Selina died in 1902 and then William remarried in 1911. I have found no record whatsoever that Nancy ever existed.

Sorry this is all a bit convoluted.

Bedfordshire / James Saunders

Can anyone make a suggestion regarding James Saunders.

I have a Census for 1841 showing him in Stanford, Southill, Biggleswade, Beds age 27, with Lucy Saunders age 25 (I thought that they might be married but I could find no marriage). Then there is Sarah Young age 60, maybe Lucy's mother?, William Young (Lucy's brother if her maiden name was Young?) and Sarah Steel ?.

Then in 1851 I have James now 36 in Clifton, Biggleswade with Sarah Saunders maybe nee Young (wife), Mary Ann Saunders (daughter), William Young (brother in law), Sarah Steel (niece).

The repetition of William Young and Sarah Steel lead me to believe that this is the same James Saunders but then who is Lucy in the 1841 census? I can't find a Lucy as a wife or sister.

Any pointers would be most helpful.

Thanks

The Common Room / Versions of Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 27 January 21 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
During lockdown in the UK I have access to Ancestry Library Edition but I am a little confused. Looking at a family tree I find someone stating that they have a source for a birth/baptism - select births/baptisms. When I search for the same person I can find no such source.
Does anyone know if the library edition includes all the same records as the standard version?
And what is the difference between Ancestry.com and Ancestry.co.uk?
Thank you

Surrey / Can anyone help me identify my G grandmothers house in Mytchett Surrey
« on: Saturday 09 January 21 23:11 GMT (UK)  »
My G Grandmother's death certificate shows that she (Frances Siggery) died in the Farnham Workhouse infirmary in 1916 and that she had been living, as had her son the informant, at a cottage at Mytchett, Frimley. The name of the cottages is very difficult to decipher from the handwriting but could be "Miners Arms" although arms could be alms I suppose. I looked at the 1911 Census and it shows her living with a son and although this is W.F Siggery and not A.W Siggery as per her death certificate it could be the same. The census shows her living at the Thatched Cottages, Guildford Road, Frimley Green, Farnborough, Hants.
I have attached a copy of death certificate although I have had to crop it drastically to get under the permitted size..
Could anyone suggest whether this might be the same address and what the cottages might have been called?
Thanks for any help.
Peter

Surrey / Workhouse and orphanage
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 17:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello again all, hope everyone is keeping well.
I have moved on a bit with Agnes Bridget Hickey since I last came online. I would now appreciate some further guidance. In the 1891 census I find my grandmother, named Bridget Hickey, in the Convent of the Faithful Virgin Boarding School and Orphanage, Croydon and I find her mother, my great grandmother Ellen Hickey in the St George's Workhouse, St Saviours Union Workhouse, Mint Street, Southwark. Ellen's husband, John Hickey, had died.  I want to try to find out more about these two institutions especially any details of when they were admitted and discharged, which they were by 1901. I have found quite a bit of general background on the workhouse.org site but nothing very specific. Can anyone offer any advice? Thnk you

Hertfordshire / Clark - William James or James William
« on: Wednesday 31 July 19 23:34 BST (UK)  »
I understand that my great grandfather, James William Clark, was born in Essendon, Herts (recollection of an elderly relative so not 100% sure).

My grandmothers birth certificate shows her father as James William Clark. I have his marriage certificate dated 4  feb 1882 marrying Selina Saunders. Several censuses from 1891 showing him as James W Clark born in Hatfield, Herts.

The difficulty I have is with his birth. I have a certificate for a William James Clark for 29 Jan 1859 in Batherdale, Hatfield, Herts but that is William James not James William. This William James' father is James and his mother is Ann Sarah nee Hill.

Looking at the census for 1861 in Essendon Village I find a James Clark married to an Ann S Clark with a son James W aged 2.

I can't imagine that if a boy is christened William James then just 2 years later be renamed James William but I can't find another birth that seems to fit.

Any ideas?

Thanks
