Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1871 census street and place of birth
« on: Sunday 12 April 20 13:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Could somebody help out with the street name on this 1871 census entry please?
Also the place of birth is eluding me for Thomas Callan.  The enumerator has a strange capital L so I can see Liverpool Lancashire for Sarah Callan and the children (I think) but the place for Thomas Callan I can't.
Thanks

This is my Great Grandmother Margaret pictured in Australia.  Margaret was born in 1869 if that helps.
Thanks

World War One / 57th West Lancs Divisional Signals Company Royal Engineers 1916
« on: Monday 09 March 20 12:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have an original print of the 57th West Lancs Divisional Signals Company Royal Engineers dated 1916 (Territorial Force of men from Liverpool I believe) about 2 1/2 feet long.

I'd like to make this available to whoever would like a copy by posting it on a military history site.  Where would be the best place to publish it?  Is there a military history website relevant to the 57th W.L. that would host it?

My grandfather is the only one I could name although the officer and other ranks such as motorcycle riders may not be too difficult to identify for anyone looking for them.
I'd be happy to create a separate closeup of each man if the site would host them (about 212 men).

I'm trying to identify the men and child in this photo.  Can anybody date it from the car and clothes please?  Even knowing the earliest year it could be would help me eliminate some possibilities.
On the reverse is written "27 Carbine St" but I haven't been able to identify which one, there are a number of them in Australia.  I've been trying to identify which one from the hill in the background.
No need to clean it up thanks as I've had to hugely reduce the image size from the original to meet the upload limit.
Thanks

Somerset / Bath tram fatal accident 29th May 1918
« on: Tuesday 03 March 20 09:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interested in knowing if there were any newspaper reports of the tram accident in Bath on 29th May 1918 when a tram ran away downhill from outside The Weston on Newbridge.
An ancestor was injured and Councillor Olinthus Newman was killed.

If this isn't available online where would I visit in Bath to view the original newspapers (or microfiches)?

Thanks

Hi
I'm looking for some guidance please on dating this photograph of the staff at The Grange guest house in Berowra, New South Wales, Australia.
The guest house was owned and operated from 1911 to 1936.  They are standing in front of an outbuilding to the side of the main house, presumably staff quarters.
I can only hazard a guess but perhaps the clothing could be a clue to someone more knowledgeable.
Thanks

The Lighter Side / Another thing to research when you think you've finished...the Priest.
« on: Wednesday 19 February 20 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
In expanding my family story I've had some success when following up the name of the priests or vicars who performed baptisms or marriages.
They are often noteworthy for other work in the ministry and are easy to google as their title narrows them down.
I've so far had success with Dean James Theodore Wagner who established the first black children's orphanage in Detroit and the first hospital in Windsor, Ontario.  In this case I have no photograph of the couple who married but I do have one of the church and of one of the priest which help to illustrate the story and bring it to life.
Also Rev Edmund Savory of Binfield in Berkshire.  His son Rev James Henry Savory played in the 1877 F.A. Cup Final.  Not directly part of the family story but an interesting note to add.
In other examples I've followed up ships' captains for other interesting voyages and a doctor who performed a very early pioneering x-ray on a family member that was so novel it was reported in the newspaper.

World War One / US Army headstone - help to understand the unit abbreviation
« on: Sunday 26 January 20 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm looking for help in understanding the abbreviation on this headstone please.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/85181554

"THOMAS F HAYES
MICHIGAN
PVT CO I CASUAL DET
WORLD WAR 1"

The only obvious parts to me are 'Private' and 'Detachment'

I can't find a clear link to what "I CASUAL" refers to other than some references to 1 Casual so rather than guess I'd appreciate a definitive description of the unit please if anyone can help me.
Thanks

United States of America / Hayes family, Wayne County, Detroit, Michigan
« on: Tuesday 12 November 19 12:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm trying to link up with a branch of my family in Detroit.  There are some members on Ancestry trees but none reply when contacted.

The family descend from my Great Great Grandmother who emigrated to the US with her daughter, having separated from her husband and two sons.  The other branches of the family are in Liverpool, UK and New South Wales, Australia.

Catherine Sullivan nee Quinn (daughter of Lawrence and Sarah Quinn) of Waterford at age 38 sailed from Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland arriving at Halifax on 30th July 1882 and settled in Detroit.
Catherine brought her only daughter Mary Anne Sullivan age 15.

Mary Anne (Anna) (17) married Daniel Hayes (25) on 25th Oct 1883 in a church in Essex, Ontario, directly over the river from Detroit (presumably for parental consent reasons).

Daniel was also of Irish descent having emigrated from Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland.

Anna and Daniel had surviving children:
Cassie Hayes born Sep 1884
Hannah Hayes born Jun 1889
Thomas F Hayes born Aug 1893
Joseph Hayes born Feb 1896

Catherine Sullivan died age 61 on 13th March 1904 and lived at 234 Lovett, MI.

I have quite a history of Catherine and her husband Jeremiah that I would love to share with the family and would also be keen to hear the story from Catherine's side.
