Europe / Prussia
« on: Wednesday 08 May 24 06:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi

How easy is it to find records, birth registrations or marriage for those born or who were in Prussia before relocating to England.

I have a family Robert Battle and wife Hannah who had a few children in Prussia before relocating to Hull, Yorkshire.  Two of the children Emel/Amel?  Pole/Powell were born in Prussia and I wondered how easy it would be to locate their birth records and also the marriage record of Robert and Hannah as Im unsure on Hannah's surname.  They did have some children in Hull/Yorkshire but locating the records with a view to finding Hannah's maiden name has been difficult.

Are there any good sites where records such as birth and marriages that took place in Prussia can be researched?

Thanks

Warwickshire / matilda mayes/masey
« on: Wednesday 10 April 24 22:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

For several years now I had been stuck with my grandads, gran, first found in a 1871 census at Gem Street industrial school aged 3, her surname was spelt Mayes.  However, all her records show she comes from Birmingham but we could not find any sign of a Matilda Mayes born in Birmingham around 1867.  Interestingly on one of the census's, I believe the 1871 census there is also another Mayes child at the school.

Its been long suspected that Matilda was actually born Masey and today I received the digital image for the birth registration that we suspect is Matilda,

Matilda Mayes was the mother of May Elizabeth Johns born either 1896 or 1898 as the census and birth record don't quite tally. Matilda Mayes was born 1867. Matilda would be my great, great grandmother but when she was just 3yrs old, she ended up in gem Street industrial school for unruly children in birmingham. She is on the 1871 census at gem Street age 3 but was also at Walton Rd Major Lesters Girls Home in Lancashire.

Matilda is thought to come from Birmingham and lived with George Johns in Birmingham where she had a large family of 13 children, of which 5 died.  I've never found a marriage record for them. Matilda lived at 23 wilton st lozells birmingham in 1925, living with 2 of her children ernest and william...George had died at this point.

I would like help to now work out who her parents are, what happened to them, did Matilda have any siblings so I can progress this side of the family tree.  Any help you can offer, would be so appreciated.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Abrahams of birmingham
« on: Sunday 07 April 24 18:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

How accurate is the 1921 census with regards date of birth year?  I decided to look at the 1921 census to identify where the abrahams family were.

I looked for Joseph Abrahams born around 1863 Birmingham. I found Joseph with Mabel his second wife nee sutton.  However, his year of birth is down as 1858 not 1863 I looked for Albert, Ernest, Bertie, Maud and Edith abrahams, the children of Joseph Abrahams and Mary Ann (Dolly) Tongue.  I also double checked the gro to get accurate birth registrations for the children.

Albert Abrahams Jan 1898 I found with his wife and daughter, wife Elsie May Greenwood living at 1back 8 Eyre street, birmingham.

Bertie Abrahams 1893, I found visiting Joseph Abrahams, it said of no fixed abode although he married Daisy Portsmouth in 1919 but I do know she left him and he was somewhat of a bigamist.  There is a newspaper article I found on this.

Edith abrahams I have found no trace of, last seen in 1911 at winson green prison.

Maud Abrahams, birth 1891 I found married as Maud Skelding, birmingham.  Somewhat to my surprize Ernest Abrahams is also at this address but is down as half brother, born around 1901 which is different to ernest registered 1895.  Also they all share the same mother.  I'm not sure why there is another ernest with a completely different birthdate, and why half brother.  In addition ernest was registered birmingham and on the 1921 census he works in birmingham but it says he was born leicester

Does anyone have any light they could shed on this.  Thank you

Kent Lookup Requests / James William Dawson died March 1994
« on: Thursday 04 April 24 12:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi I was hoping some of you could help.  I've been having a nightmare trying to identify James William Dawson who married Jenifer Mary Jennings.  James is 72 upon his death

I had little to go on but I think I have made a breakthrough of sorts with when he died, where, and potential year of birth.  I was also hoping someone who has access to FindMyPast or newspapers could look up a gazette article for me and post it here as I don't have a subscription to do this.

Firstly the gazette article mentions Jame's son Charles Conway Dawson who apparently was organising the funeral/Cremation.  I would be really grateful if someone could access this article for me.

There is a cremation entry on another ancestry site that it took place Tunbridge Well's, Kent March 1994.  And James died 5th March 1994.  I was given wrong information before finding this information out.  Since then I have discovered his date of birth on another site is being given as 14th Jan 1922.  I can't find a 1939 census with this date of birth.

The help I really would like is to find out where he was born and who his parents were.  James had 7 sons with Jenifer but so little is known about James William Dawson so that this side of the tree can be progressed.  If this request fails to move things on I may have to resort to getting the marriage certificate for the friend that I am doing the tree for.

It is believed that James also had a sister who died a couple of years ago in London.  James death was registered at Croydon and he was living in Notting Hill so unsure as to why the funeral took place in Kent.

Thanks for any help you can provide.  I would really like to smash this block.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Jenifer Jennings 1930 ish James Dawson
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi I was wondering if someone could help unravel info on Jenifer M Jennings who married James W Dawson.  I found a marriage registration for a James W Dawson.  James died in 1993 .  I was hoping someone may be able to find more info on James for me, where he was born, and any siblings.

There are two Jenifer M Jennings listed around the year Jenifer was born.  I'm not sure which one she is.  She has a sister Claire Jennings, and Tizer Jennings - unsure what Tizer is short for and whether male or female at this stage.  The marriage of James and Jenifer took place in west sussex which is leading me to thinking perhaps the first entry below is hers?

Thanks

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Ernest Abrahams 1895
« on: Monday 01 April 24 19:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I'm looking for information and clarification on Ernest Abrahams.  I found Ernest's GRO index mmn Tongue and indeed his mother's maiden name was Mary Ann "Dolly" Tongue 1864
BIRTH APR 1864 • Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

On another ancestry site, many people have Ernest with middle name Alfred.  However, there's no mention of this name on his GRO index, nor in the 1901 and 1911 census.  In 1911 Ernest is found

Age in 1911   15
Estimated Birth Year   abt 1896
Relation to Head   Inmate
Gender   Male
Birth Place   Birmingham
Civil parish   Hayes
County/Island   Middlesex
Country   England
Street Address   Hayes Certified Industrial School For Jewish Boys, Hayes Certified Industrial School For Jewish Boys Hayes Uxbridge

Could someone take a look and see if Ernest is completely different to the Ernest Albert Abrahams found on other people's trees who was born I believe in 1896.  I do know that some of the abrahams family changed their name eg Bertie Abrahams, Ernest's brother switched between abrahams and haywood - Haywood chosen I believe to distract from jewish heritage or because he was found to be a bigamist.  I haven't been able to find anything concrete on Ernest after the 1911 census.  I've also been trying to find information on Edith Abrahams 1884, birmingham, Ernest's sister who was last seen as a prisoner in 1911 but haven't been able to find out why or what happened to her from there.

Thanks
