Family History Beginners Board / Arthur Penfold : Traveller and Hawker
« on: Thursday 22 June 23 15:52 BST (UK)  »
I have hit a solid brick wall with regards the mother of my grandfather Arthur Penfold.

He was born in Southampton c. 1875 to  Amos but I cannot find his mother though it could be Ethel who shows in the 1891 Census. It says she is about the same age but unknown as to birthplace

Arthur had two sisters Priscilla , born 1882 in Wiltshire but whose mother is listed as Esther and Patience born in 1891 in Brighton whose mother was Ethel.

I have no marriage certificate for Amos and his wife nor for Arthur and his wife Priscilla Thompson

Over the years there was a lot of inter marriage between Penfolds and so many have the same names!

Maybe I should just give up

Berkshire / Berkshire Lunatic Asylum
« on: Wednesday 11 August 21 13:26 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me, please, in finding details of the death of Ellen H Waldron who was born in Newport, Monmouthshire and died March 1907 at The Bekshire Lunatic Asylum.?
I understand that records are kept at the Berkshire Record Office, 9, Coley Avenue, Reading.
If anyone is visiting there for their own research I would be so grateful if you could look up Ellen.
I would do it myself but live in France and it will be a long time before I get home again
Thank you :)

Teresa Haughey married Edward McMahon 7 June 1863 in Aghaloo Parish, Tyrone.
I have found some family members and place of birth ( Armagh) for Teresa but nothing for Edward
I've searched on Ancestry, Family Search and Irish Genealogy but no luck so far.
Thanks for any help

I can read at the bottom of the left hand page:
William of Laurence Laughran and Sarah Moran. Sponsors James McGlone and Margaret Murphy but what comes next? I've been searching Armagh place names but no luck.
Thank you :)

Ireland / A continuing search
« on: Tuesday 08 June 21 20:52 BST (UK)  »
After building a tree with many hundreds of  ancestors on 3 continents I have found that the key person, my great grandfather, was the wrong James McMahon

So, I am starting over and hope someone is able to help fill in the gap particularly regarding his parents and their families.

The only James McMahon I can find from Armagh ( other than the family from Crossmaglen who I had followed previously) with a father named Edward ( this I know from James's marriage certificate) was born  at Derrykintone, Armagh .

He was the second child of Edward and Teresa  nee  Haughey. She was in 1838, Armagh to James and Alice nee Laughren.

Edward and Teresa's other children were:
 John b.1863 Aghaloo, Tyrone
 Mary 1866
Edward 1870
Catherine1871
Joseph 1872
Francis 1874
Thomas 1876
Ann 1881

All the children, other than John, were born in Armagh.

I have quite a bit of information after James's marriage to Julia Brown in Belfast

I am looking for Edward's place and date of birth and any details about his family and any information on Teresa's family.

I have searched thoroughly on Ancestry, Irish Genealogy and Family Search but no luck.

I'd be so grateful for any information please/

Teresa died 8 days after Anne's birth

Family History Beginners Board / Name confusion...
« on: Wednesday 28 April 21 20:49 BST (UK)  »
I have been comparing two possible siblings:

Michael Mahan baptised 23 October 1796 with parents Phelix Mahan and Alice Means or Mains
and
Cate Mahan baptised 16 August 1807 with the same mother but Felemy Mahan as the father

Are Felemy and Phelix interchangeable?
And the same with Mahan and McMahon.

Armagh / St Brigid's Primary School, Armagh mid 19th Century
« on: Friday 08 May 20 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello again,

I was reading today that information regarding schools and their pupils might be available on Pronis ecatalogue
As my McMahon family lived in Crossmaglen I thought perhaps they might have attended St Brigid's school but have been unable to access anything.
Am I expecting too much?
Kind regards

World War One / Netley Hospital, Hampshire, England
« on: Thursday 30 January 20 21:06 GMT (UK)  »

My grandfather, James McMahon of Belfast, moved to Southampton some time after 1911 and married my grandmother in 1917.
The marriage certificate states  his address as Red Cross Hospital, Netley.
Would that mean he was serving in the military? In peace time he was a barber. Would this have been a trade useful to an army hospital?
One of the witnesses was Driver Harry Robinson. Is that a military position?
I'd appreciate any information
Thank you
