World War Two / My father's "missing~" war years
« on: Friday 03 May 24 08:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My father, who dies over a decade ago, always told us that he volunteered for the Navy as soon as he could after war was declared in 1939. He was categoric about this, telling us that he and 3 of his friends from the Adventure Scouts volunteered on the same day.
Dad's Naval Service record, however, only starts at 13th October 1941 but with a note  “?????? under NS (AF) Act 1939” - see attachments

Dad was 18 at the start of the war, having been born 6th May 1921. He was single, and working as a transport office clerk according to the 1939 electoral register.

Could anyone shed any light on this? How might I find what my father was up to in 1939-41?

All help gratefully received!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Puzzing DNA origins results on Ancestry
« on: Friday 03 May 24 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi

MY DNA results suggest that my lot mostly originate from East Anglia - see "DNA ALL" attachment.

If I click on "Maternal", I get an identical map; if I click on "Paternal", however, I get nothing -see 2nd attachment. This makes no sense to me.

BTW my father's grandfather's family came from North Essex, part of East Anglia.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

« on: Thursday 26 October 23 06:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone make any sense of the attached - what does "W01" mean?

It's from my father's naval record.  13th Oct 1935 4th anniversary of his joining the navy.

Thanks!

Armed Forces / WW2 Naval Training Record
« on: Wednesday 25 October 23 10:40 BST (UK)  »
My father told me he volunteered for the Navy as soon as WW2 started, and mentioned doing training in Scotland and near Gosport.
His naval service record, however, only starts at 13th October 1941, although there is a note staying, I think, "Entered Index NS (AS) Act 1939" - see attached. Any idea what this means?
How could I find out what he did between 1939 and 1941?

Armed Forces / Meaning of "Tenders" on Naval Record
« on: Wednesday 25 October 23 09:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to make sense of my father's WW2 naval record.
Dad told me he'd been on two ships, the second of which was "The Grey Goose", but there are 16 ship entries on his naval record.
Starting with the "Grey Goose":
The column "Name of Ship (Tenders to be inserted in brackets)" contains the following entries
  • Boscawen (Grey Goose)
    Lynx (Grey Goose)
    Attack (Grey Goose)
    Pembroke J (Grey Goose)
Could anyone explain this to me?

Family History Beginners Board / Does "John Canfield" ring any bells?
« on: Saturday 24 December 22 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've made very good progress on my family tree, but I'm struggling to find out much about my 2nd great-grandfather John Canfield (b c1825, St Pancras; d after 1891).
He didn't marry my 2nd great grandmother Sarah Douglass, but his name appears on their daughter Alice's birth certificate. John was an engineer/engine fitter, and he appears in the 1841,1881 and 1891 censuses, living in Lambeth, but not in the 1851/61/71 censuses.

One suggestion is that he may have been at sea operating/fixing engines during at least some of these periods. Does anyone have any idea where I could pursue this somewhat vague lead?

Or is there anyone with Canfields in their family tree who could offer any information?

Thanks for any help!
