Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1851 surname and status - Portsmouth
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 22:13 GMT (UK)  »
Evening.  Struggling to read a surname and also the status of someone in the 1851 Portsmouth census.  Not convinced that Ancestry is correct.
Looking for the Head of the household Sarah ------.   Be---nt or Be--out?
And also want to check the status of both Sarahs.  I have Sarah (Head) as widow and Sarah Moody as Married.  Do you concur?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation from an 1850 birth certificate
« on: Saturday 19 December 20 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone can help.  Trying to decipher a father's occupation listed on an 1850 birth certificate.  His son was born in Portsmouth so may be relevant to the occupation.  If I have his son's later marriage certificate (I'm not 100% certain it is his son's marriage) then at his marriage 23 years later his deceased father's occupation was "Engineer".  Best I've come up with is Thatcher but not convinced as don't think there would be much call for thatchers in Portsmouth in 1850.
