London and Middlesex / Strand Union Workhouse census returns
« on: Sunday 06 June 21 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone point me to the specific pages on Ancestry or FindMyPast for scans of the 1841 & 1851 census returns for the Strand Union Workhouse.  It was in Cleveland Street, Marylebone, but I can't find it by browsing the Cleveland Street pages so presume it must have its own section somewhere.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Locating St Clement Danes Orphan
« on: Monday 24 May 21 14:57 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate a baptismal record for Robert Stofer (alternatively Stoffer, Stoffa, Stopher) who was born 1819-1822 to Robert Stofer and Sarah Stofer (née Harris), then living in St. Clement Danes, Middlesex but prior to that Chipping Barnet, Herts.

Later census entries and his death certificate indicate the 1819-22 birth date range, census entries indicate he was born in Temple Bar (St. Clement Danes) and Land Tax records for his Father show him living in Chair Court, near Temple Bar, in this period.

I can find no baptismal record for a Robert Stofer (or alternative spellings) on Ancestry or FamilySearch in Middlesex or adjacent counties in the period 1819-1829 (allowing for a late baptism).  There are 2 earlier baptisms of a Robert Stofer to his parents (the first in Chipping Barnet, the second in St. Clement Danes) but both died in infancy. He would have been the 3rd (clearly the name Robert was important as the first-born males over 4 generations were all named Robert).

It his Mother died in 1821 and my current best guess is that she died in childbirth, leaving his Father alone with a baby that (as a Labourer) he could not support.  I have investigated the possibility that he was passed to the extended family but can find no record of a baptism in their locations. Possibly he was either not baptised at all or he passed into the care of the Parish or an Orphanage for infants.

He clearly knew his birth history as he retained his Robert Stofer name in later life and knew his place of birth.

I'm a bit at a loss as to how to proceed.  Can anyone advise what the most likely Orphanages would be in/near St Clement Danes and what admissions records might be available, and where?

Many thanks

Nigel

Family History Beginners Board / Missing IGI records?
« on: Sunday 23 May 21 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm restarting research after many years.  I have an IGI printout from 1988 which includes several records that no longer seem to be available on familysearch.org using the Search/Records facility.  e.g.:

Stofer, Jonathan married Martha Brown 11 Sep 1755 at Ashfield by Debenham (Suffolk, England)
Stofer, Jonathan married Mary Scotchmer 8 Oct 1771 at Earl Soham (Suffolk, England)
Stopher, Jonathan christened 23 Mar 1758bat Earl Soham (Suffolk, England), parents Jonathan and Martha Stopher

Are these missing records incorrect ones that have been removed or are not all the IGI records indexed online on FamilySearch?

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Burial register abbreviations
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 14:07 BST (UK)  »
A number of 18C English burials registers have the abbreviation CH against some entries and also the letter P in the day of the month column. See attached example.

I'm assuming CH means Child - is that correct and is there any convention for how old someone had to be to be classed as a child?

I don't know what the P means. Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Nigel
