Inverness / James Grant, Writer in Inverness 1808
« on: Friday 27 October 23 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone on here have any knowledge of a James Grant, shown as a writer, Inverness, 1808?

The reason I ask is my 3x grand uncle, David Macdonald at the age of 12 years entered a period of 5 years indentured servitude with him in that year.

David Macdonald thereafter disappears from records, and I can find no trace of him.

Northumberland / Isabel Stephenson
« on: Sunday 17 September 23 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I’m new to English genealogy and tbh I’m really struggling.

My mother Isabel Stephenson was born Newcastle 20/10/1926.

Her father was George Frederick Stephenson, born 20/01/1893.
Her mother was Elizabeth Jane Dodds.

Her grandfather was Samuel Stephenson, born 1867.

Elizabeth Jane Dodds’ father was John Robert Dodds, born June 1871.

Mt mother was Catholic, and I’ve always had a vague notion there is Irish ancestry in there, but I’ve hit a brick wall.

Does this tie in with anybody else’s history?

Inverness / John Macdonald or MacSween
« on: Monday 19 June 23 09:46 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody have any knowledge of John Macdonald alias MacSween, weaver, Inverness, who is shown in the list of 1812 burgesses as being able to carry out his business in the town.
He swore allegiance re this, and paid his tax on 11 January 1796.
A John Macdonald, weaver, married Mary Fraser in Inverness 1776. I’m thinking they are the same person.
I’m also thinking this is the same person who appears as John Macdonald alias MacQueen in Kirkhill, Inverness, in marriage certificate to Mary Chisholm, and thereafter  birth records for the couples’s children, again sometimes with the alias.
To further confuse matters the couple had a child Sween born 1805, who died young, then another  child, also Sween in 1810

Ross & Cromarty / Betsy Macdonald

I’m getting ma heid done in here!
I’m researching family of my great great grandparents, Hugh MacDonald (blacksmith) and his wife, Mary Ann Gray. They had 8 children.I’ve pretty much followed them all, bar one.
Her name is Betsy Macdonald, born 26/7/1878 at Knockbain. She appears in the 1881 and 1891 census, but then disappears.
Nothing in deaths, marriages etc. Tried Find My Past, Scotlands People…nothing!
Anybody got any further info on this family?

Inverness / Kirkhill Macdonalds

I posted here before bemoaning the fact I’d hit a brick wall. Firstly, thank you to all who responded.
I’m happy to report I’ve made progress!
I was stuck at my 3x great grandfather, Donald Macdonald, who I thought to be born 1798, father Donald Macdonald. This was wrong.
I found him today!
Donald Macdonald, born 21/02/1799. Parents John Macdonald, and Mary Chisholm. They were married 1792 at Inverness.
Interesting thing is John was married using the name John Macqueen. This name was also used as an alias in record of birth of son in 1805.
Other children are :-
John Macdonald, b 13/11/1793
Twins, Elizabeth & Katherine, born 25/12/1794
David Macdonald, 18/10/1796
Sween/Sweyn/Swein born 1806.
John senior was a blacksmith near Kirkhill.
This occupation was carried on right through the generations until death of my grandfather in 1964.
I’m hoping this will hook into somebody else’s research, and of course I’m looking now for John’s parents.
A Gaelic scholar friend of mine  suggested the use of Macqueen may indicate John was ‘son of’ Macqueen/MacSween, so a patronymic name, translated into English.
All suggestions/info welcome.
Thank you

Inverness / Macdonalds, Kirkhill, Inverness

My family research has hit a brick wall.
3x great Grandfather Donald Macdonald, Blacksmith, Charleston, Parish of Knockbain, dies 1878.
He was easily traced to Charleston village, Ross-shire through census, right back to 1841.
His place of birth on census given as Kirkhill, Inverness-shire.
Married at Inverness 1819 to Ann Macpherson.
Several children to the couple, all easily found.
But Donald himself!!! Mystery man.
On his death certificate his father is shown also Donald Macdonald, no name for mother.
I cannot find a birth record for him anywhere. Died 1878 aged 80 years.
Does this link into anyone else on here?
Any help greatly appreciated.
