Berkshire / Nancie Elizabeth Furber - living in Abingdon in 1925
« on: Saturday 04 May 24 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone help me find out where Nancie Elizabeth Furber (nee Cooper) was born.

I have found date of birth for Nancie - 9 August 1886 - from an incoming shipping list from Durban, South Africa arriving in Southampton on 2nd September 1955.  When Nancie arrived in 1955 the address given was Catmore Farm, Catmore, near Newbury, Berkshire.  She died in South Africa according to another tree in 1966.  Sadly there is no birthplace given for Nancie.

Nancie Elizabeth Cooper married Montague Richard Furber on 18 January 1917 at the parish church in Goring, Oxfordshire when she was 32 and Montague 40.   Her father is given as William Cooper.   I believe Montague and Nancie had three children, Rosemary (Sheila?) Furber born in 1918; Patrick Richard Montague Furber born in 1920 at Goring and Kenneth A Furber born in 1923 at Bradfield in Berkshire.   I have an electoral register entry for Nancie and Montague giving their address as Alders, in the parish of North Moreton, Abingdon, Berkshire.   I haven't been able to find them on the 1921 Census - maybe I am not looking in the right place but various attempts have drawn a blank.   I haven't been able to find a birth record on BMD either but will still keep looking.

Can anyone shed any light on where I maybe able to find her birthplace and her mother's name.

Many thanks   Ellenmaggie

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Elizabeth Cox
« on: Sunday 12 November 23 10:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have an Elizabeth Cox, the daughter of Gilbert and Ann Cox, on my tree and the first record I found was for a baptism privately on 7th March 1821 at Yateley Church in Hampshire - below the record I think it says welcomed into the church on 25th March.   I am now wondering whether this was a second baptism because I have subsequently found another baptism on 8th March 1812 for an Elizabeth Cox born on 3rd February 1812 also the daughter of Gilbert and Ann Cox.

Before the second baptismal record was found I had a marriage for Elizabeth Cox to a John Kelsey (born 1819 in Hawley, Hampshire) on 6th July 1850 at Holy Trinity Church, Hawley.  Both were living in Blackwater at the time of their marriage.   The only thing that bothered me was that Elizabeth's father was recorded as Henry Cox and so noted on my records "Marriage certificate records Elizabeth's father as Henry.  Her brother Henry was a witness to the marriage and her father Gilbert was deceased - so Henry's name put down I would guess".   I didn't pursue it any further as she was not on my direct line.  The only census I found was for 1851 confirming Elizabeth Kelsey was born in Yateley, Hampshire and she was 30 born about 1821.

However while following up another branch on the tree via DNA I came across an Eliza Cox marrying David White (a possible 2nd cousin 5xremoved) on 16 October 1834 at Wield in Hampshire.  They were both of the parish.  It was when I started looking at their family I found that Eliza was born in Blackwater, Hampshire (1851 Census), Yateley (1861 Census) in about 1811.   Eliza White died on 19 February 1871 aged 59. It was when I was looking at Eliza I discovered that others had her parents as Gilbert and Ann Cox (nee Marshall) just as I had for my Elizabeth Cox.

I then tried to find out more about Elizabeth Cox Kelsey, whose father may well have been Henry Cox but have been unable to find her and John on the 1861 Census or any death records, or baptismal records for possible children.

Thereafter the trail gets cold.   I thought she might have married James Mansfield Houlton in Windsor in 1851 but it was a false trail as he married Jane Pain, the third daughter of William Pain Esq of Hill House Farm, Bagshot according to an annoucement in the Windsor and Eton Express on 14 June 1851.

As yet I haven't found any sign of a death record or a marriage record....can anyone help?

Berkshire Lookup Requests / James Mansfield Houlton - Marriage - 1851
« on: Tuesday 17 October 23 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have come across a record that maybe the one I am looking for - a marriage for James Mansfield Houlton to Jane Paice/Price in Windsor in the second quarter of 1851.   In the Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005 the name is shown as Paice and in the England Marriages, 1538–1973 it has been transcribed as Price.  I have not been able to find the written document to judge for myself or to see the names of the witnesses to verify that it is the Jane Paice I am looking for.   Is anyone able to help?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Harriet PAICE born 1816 Yateley Hampshire
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 15:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I am trying to find out more about Harriet Paice, the daughter of William Paice and his wife Ann Hood.   Harriet was baptised on 15th December 1816 and was their eighth child, sixth daughter.   I cannot find her on any censuses but believe she was not married as William's will just mentions Harriet and not Harriet, wife of.... as he does for all his other daughters.   So I am working on the premise that she wasn't married in 1849 when the will was written and signed.

I have found another tree that suggests she may have married a James Warner in Westend, South Stoneham in 1852, but I cannot find a copy of the original document to check against.   The 1861 Census for James and Harriet Warner does state Harriet was born in Yateley (as does the 1871 Census) so it may well be her.   The BMD record for the marriage gives her name as Harriet Price, so I am still trying to find another piece of evidence that confirms she is Harriet Paice born in Yateley to William Paice.

Is anyone able to help?

TIA

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / James PARKER and Mary MERRETT
« on: Wednesday 21 June 23 10:50 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help - I am researching my husband's family tree and have got back to his 4GGF James Parker.  He is the father of John Parker baptised in Yateley, Hampshire on 23 September 1821.   His wife was Mary.
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/62422/images/62422_373055000119_0323-00067?pId=286191

James Parker married Mary Merrett on 16th May 1819 at Yateley, Hampshire by banns.
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/62423/images/62423_314054000109_0833-00032?pId=63054

They had at least two children I know of - George and John.   John is my husband's ancestor.  George was baptised 15th August 1819 in Eversley, Hampshire
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/62422/images/62422_373055000119_0312-00032?pId=273517

In 1841 George (aged 20, an ag lab) is living with is mother Mary (born abt 1791 aged 50 independent)in Yateley with a farmer William Thrift
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/8978/images/HAMHO107_394_396-0212?pId=5002965
In 1841 John (20)is living in Yateley with a James Parker (35) with the head of the house, Catherine Goddard
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/8978/images/HAMHO107_394_396-0209?pId=5002791

I am not convinced that this James is John's father even allowing for the rounding down on the census.   There are other Parkers in Yateley and I am trying to see if I can connect them but no luck so far.   The James on the 41 Census maybe James Parker son of Richard and Elizabeth Parker born on 14 April 1802, baptised 3 May 1802 in Yateley.  It could be possible that James was 18 when he married and Mary 28.  But why weren't the family together on the 41 Census.  Mary was independent - does this mean she was widowed.

There is a burial for a James Parker on 23 December 1823 in Yateley -James was 28, which would make his birthdate around 1795 and thus closer to Mary's age.  It would also explain why there were no further children born to Mary and James.

Mary Parker nee Merrett died on 8th May 1865 in Yateley aged 75 years old.   The 1861 Census gives her birthplace as Basingstoke and I have found a baptismal record for a Mary Merrot 15th May 1791 at Medstead (near Alton) south of Basingstoke.  She was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Merrot - reputed father Edward Battle.

So I have come to a halt with both Mary and James.   I cannot find a baptismal record for James Parker circa 1795 (if that is the right James) and so no names of parents.   As yet I have not been able to track down James Parker from the 41 Census to rule him out completed, but as I say I am not convinced he is the father of John.

Hello, can anyone help me decipher the place of birth for Mary Tomkins - it looks like Garbert Barks - so guessing Berkshire.   Mary Tomkins nee Hudson married John Tomkins (or Tompkins depending on who was writing down the name) in 1797.  She was from the parish of Stoke Talmage and John from Great Milton - both in Oxfordshire.   From the census her date of birth is circa 1778.

Oxfordshire / Thomas JOHNSON - abt 1789 - Fawler - Charlbury Oxford - Transportation
« on: Wednesday 04 January 23 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Researching my friend's Oxford family I have her 4th Great Grandfather as Thomas Johnson (possibly born abt 1789).  He married Jane Green on 1st June 1803 in Charlbury.   He was from the parish of Fawler.   They had at least six children:
Elizabeth bapt 1804 - family living in Fawler
William bapt 1805 - family now living in Charlbury
Hannah bapt 1808
Thomas bapt 1810
James bapt 1812
John bapt 1814 - my friend's 3rd Great Grandfather who married Elizabeth Gardiner on 27 July 1837 in Oxford
Thomas and Jane may have had more children in Black Bourton - yet to be researched - but possibly not if the record I have found for a Thomas Johnson being sentenced for transportation is correct.

My question is how can I find out more about the trial that took place in Oxfordshire on 27 June 1836.
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1590/images/31251_A006052-00111?pId=857919
I want to find out if it is indeed my friend's 4GGF.
I have found a record that tallies on Convict Records
https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/johnson/thomas/38540?fbclid=IwAR1S6E2_g_W7nMay_FIFhFi_qoVV0_b9_iuB7hJKojq83pzHo5dSoOoL4A4

I think I have found his wife Jane Johnson on the 1841 and 1851 Censuses living in Fritwell.
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/8978/images/OXFHO107_883_886-0522?pId=9420409
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/8860/images/OXFHO107_1729_1729-0408?pId=4138590
but no sign of Thomas which supports the theory that he may have been transported to Australia.
I have tried a search of the newspaper archive but not found anything yet about a trial, but I will try again.

Many thanks

Ellenmaggie
