The Lighter Side / Why was a given only 1 christian name
« on: Wednesday 24 December 14 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have only 1 christian (or forename) and so have most of my family! I would love to have at least 1 more name, but it is not to be. My beautiful grandson has 3. Could anyone help me with the information that I have, that working class people were just given 1 name (mostly) and that better off people had more names? My father once told me that 1 name was considered enough, anyone any thoughts on this. Only my grandmother had 2 names Jane Elizabeth which I think is lovely.
Kind regards
Susan  :)

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Graham and Flower familes West stockwith
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 10:13 BST (UK)  »
On Thursday of this week I drove to Nottingham to do research at the Archives I could not find any where to park, after a two hour journey and driving around for another hour I gave up. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement (moan over) so I am turning to rootschat to help me.
I am looking for information regarding the Graham Family. On the 1911 census Dianah Graham Nee. Flower says she had 14 children but only 7 are now alive (I have found 2 of the children Hannah Elizabeth - twin of Olive May born 1891 and died 1895 born and died West Stockwith) and Henry Hanson Graham born 1904 and died 1909 born and died in Wakefield Yorkshire. The family moved from West Stockwith to Wakefield Yorkshire about 1900.
I wanted to look at baptisms and deaths for the St. Mary the Virgin Church West Stockwith,  All Saints Church Misterton and Primitive Methodist Chapel Gainsborough. I have found on BDM twins registered - Female Graham and Male Graham born Gainsborough Lincolnshire first quarter of 1888 and died in the same quarter.I sent away for a birth certificate to Nottingham Office and was told they didnt have it and I should try Scunthorpe. My though was if these twins were baptised before they died there would be a record and I could find out if these children belonged to Henry and Dianah. Also can births be registered without the child having a name? everyone should have a name.
Dianah Flower married Henry Hanson Graham in 1884 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel Gainsborough her father was Thomas Flower, his father crossed out on certificate.
I hope I have made myself clear - many thanks to all who read my request. (I am told the Nottingham Archieves in going to be closed for a few months from October 2014. Any help or information regarding the above family would be very much appreciated. I have visited West Stockwith a couple of times and its lovely.
Kind regards

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Osborne House
« on: Monday 18 August 14 15:28 BST (UK)  »
I would be grateful for any help or advice regarding the following - I recently visited Osborne House (which was delightful) but I was wondering about the people who worked at the house - the servants ect. Would the household of Osborne House be on the census returns (I am sure they will be) and how would I go about finding anyone, I have no names to look for on ancestry. Would the royal family be on the census returns if they were staying at the house - I know I have asked my questions, but any help would be much appreciated,  I feel it would be interesting to know about the people who ran this great house ,I hope I have made myself understood
Kind regards Susan

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Help needed to find Sophia Brook on the 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 29 April 14 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help or advise me what I could do next to find Sophia Brook Born East Ardsley Wakefield in 1834 (I have her baptism at the local Church) she never married and died in 1902 aged 68 years I have found her grave at St. Michaels Church East Ardsley and her address on the burial register says she lived in East Ardsley. I have tried everything I can think of to find her on the 1901 census just using her first name, just using her last name, even doing a country search, but nothing. Was it possible that she was missed off the 1901 census, I know this can happen, or people are staying away overnight.
On the 1891 census she is living in Main Street East Ardsley Wakefield says she was born in Kirkhamgate (which is the next village to East Ardsley) and has 2 boarders living with her -
Daniel (Cannot read last name) aged 23
Oliver Lake - aged 22
Any help would be much appreciated
Kind regards Susan
