Monaghan / searching for Bernard McCaull, "generous" late 1700s-early 1800s
« on: Friday 06 May 22 08:21 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any details (Birth/marriage/death/children) of a Bernard McCaull (or McCaul), father of Michael McCaull, schoolmaster at Kingstown, Co Dublin (b Abt 1794 Co Monaghan, d. 2.12.1839 Kingstown - now Dun Laoghaire)

A reference to Bernard McCaull can be found in the Trinity College alumni online, here:
https://digitalcollections.tcd.ie/concern/works/70795b624?locale=en
page 526
under McCaull, Michael, as being Michael's father, and described as being a "generosus"
https://www.wordsense.eu/generosus/
Unsure exactly what the title 'generosus' exactly refers to in this case, but on ancestry.com there appears to have been a J.P. in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, by the name of Bernard McCaul in the mid to late 1800s, possibly a descendant.

Bernard's son, Michael McCaull, was born Abt. 1794 in Monaghan, Co Monaghan, Ireland and served as the schoolmaster at Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) from at least 1829 ("Saunders's News-Letter", Dublin, 16 March, 1829)
until at least 1836 (from an article in Saunders' Newsletter of 29/9/1836, Michael McCaul's "Infant School" was located in York St., Kingstown - Dun Laoghaire) possibly until his death in 1839.

Any help appreciated.

Devon / John Hodder burial 7 Aug 1783 Ugborough
« on: Thursday 24 March 22 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
There is a record for a burial of John Hodder 7 Aug 1783 Ugborough

Are there any clues if this was John Hodder bap 30 Jul 1756 Ugborough
(married Mary Pyne 25 Nov 1781 • Tavistock, Devon) - Mary died in Ugborough 1795

or his father John Hodder bap 30 Dec 1726 Ugborough (married Sarah Crocker, 23 Mar 1754 • Dartmouth, St Saviour, Devon) - Sarah died in 1783 in Ugborough

I'm looking for a burial date for both Johns

thanks

Devon / George Pearse b abt 1820 Walkhampton
« on: Wednesday 23 March 22 09:06 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for the parish baptism records for George Pearse, husband of Ann Hodder (they married in 1846, registered in Kingsbridge) - he appears in several census in Modbury with wife Ann (b 1819, Ugborough) with his place and date of birth as "Walkhampton", 1820.

The 1841 census before his marriage has him, aged "22", living in Ashburton with widowed mother Mary Pearse, aged "60". This brings up a blank on FindMyPast in terms of baptism records

All I can find on FindMyPast is a 23 APR 1821, North Brentor, Lamerton, Devon for a baptism - however the mother's name is wrong - Joanne

all the others are a bit far away from Walkhampton or the dates are a bit too far from 1820

Any ideas?

Devon / Hodder-Widdecombe, Devon, late 1700s early 1800s - connecting the relatives.
« on: Thursday 17 March 22 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information on birth / siblings and parents of John Hodder, b abt 1896, possibly Ugborough.

This is what I have pieced together so far

John Hodder's marriage entry to Ann Widdecombe on 15 May 1818 in Ugborough has him listed as a Yeoman, and this title stays with him on all of his children's baptism entries. In the 1841 census, he is living in Buckland Monachorum parish, in the village of Crapstone, 'age 45'. His wife, Ann, is also listed as the same age; however, I believe, findmypast has her baptised in Sep 1791 in Ugborough; father John, mother, Jenny. I suspect this couple (Ann's parents) were married in May 1774 in Ugborough, with the wife's name being Joan Martin (Jenny being a possible variant of Joan).

The 1851 census has the Hodder family living in Modbury and has Ann's place of birth as Ugborough.  John Hodder's death is registered in Kingsbridge in Mar 1844 and he is not on this census form.

Here is the info I have found for John and Ann Hodder's children, sourced either from findmypast or the 1851 census entries:
Ann Hodder (1819– b Ugborough)
Jane Hodder (1821– b Ugborough)
Elizabeth Hodder (1823– b Buckland Monachorum parish)
John Hodder (1827–1901 b Buckland Monachorum parish)
Catherine Hodder (1834–1897 b Buckland Monachorum parish)

The puzzling part comes with the witnesses to John & Ann's Wedding in 1818 (see attached). They appear to be:
Eliza Hodder, Jenny Widdecombe (hard to read - could even be "Peggy"); Servington Hodder and John Widdecombe. One would surmise they are probably close relatives.

With such an unusual name as Servington Hodder, I would have thought he would be easy to track down.

I checked with the Public trees on ancestry.com and one tree has the following:
Servington HODDER bap 25 Jul 1761, Ugborough m Elizabeth PAIN (b abt 1770) on 25 Mar 1791 in Ugborough.
Children:
John HODDER
bap 11 Mar 1792, Ugborough

Eliza HODDER
bap 3 Dec 1793, Ugborough

Sarah HODDER
bap 22 Jul 1795, Ugborough d.1802 Ugborough

Mary HODDER
bap 18 Aug 1797, Ugborough

Catherine HODDER
bap 27 Sep 1801, Ugborough

Servington HODDER
bap 12 Feb 1804, Ugborough d Mar 1874 Totnes

Jane HODDER
bap 12 Feb 1806, Ugborough

William HODDER
bap 12 Oct 1808, Ugborough

Critically, I cannot find the baptism entry cited for John Hodder 1892 anywhere online, however all baptism dates are that specific that one suspects they must have come from somewhere reliable.

I am wondering if the John Hodder here baptised in 1792 might be one and the same person as the Yeoman who was married in 1818 in Ugborough, given the connection to the name Servington on his marriage certificate. I am unsure of where the ancestry user got the information from, as he does not cite his sources. Many of the names would fit with the family and you can see there are some instances of John & Ann's children being given the same names as the children or parent (in the case of Elizabeth) in this ancestry.com constructed family.

I gather a Yeoman is a hereditary title. This should also mean John who was married in 1818's father had the same title?

If this is the correct family, I could see that either the parents Servington & Elizabeth (shortened to Eliza) or the siblings Servington & Eliza being witnesses to the marriage.
I submit the graphic from the marriage entry of the witnesses signatures.

I am also told by a relative that this branch of the family had a connection to the wine making industry (as might be surmised from the info on the 1851 census "Farming 278 acres, employing 6 labs" living at Edmeston house - now a heritage listed building) and according to my relative, the family supplied wine to the English courts for centuries. I note that one of the meanings of Yeoman is "a man holding and cultivating a small landed estate; a freeholder."

All help appreciated to untangle this jigsaw puzzle

Antrim / William Wilkinson, most likely b Antrim, early 1800s
« on: Thursday 17 March 22 03:37 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any details for a William Wilkinson, father of James Wilkinson b abt 1837.
A lot of Irish documents were destroyed in the fire of 1922 in Dublin, however James Wilkinson's marriage certificate survives (m Elizabeth Harvey, Belfast, 17 Apr 1859). It can be found here:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/6d4d1d3288820?b=https%3A%2F%2Fcivilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie%2Fchurchrecords%2Fcivil-perform-search.jsp%3Fnamefm%3Djames%26namel%3Dwilkinson%26location%3D%26yyfrom%3D1859%26yyto%3D1859%26type%3DM%26submit%3DSearch

It lists his father's name as William Wilkinson, labourer. No mother's name given.

Some trees on ancestry.com have James' father born abt 1809 or 1810. Ancestry.com has thrown up some hints, for example that William Wilkinson was baptised in Ballymoney parish, bap 5 Oct 1809; Father William Wilkinson, mother Mary Kain.

Another ancestry.com hint has a William Wilkinson marrying a Mary Anne Harrison in 1849, 12 years after the birth of James, so i doubt that hint is correct

Another ancestry.com hint has William Wilkinson's death date as 1875 in Belfast.

I cannot find any hints on findmypast.com or familysearch.org to match the above information

Can the above facts be proven as belonging to the William Wilkinson, father of James Wilkinson (b abt 1837)? Or is there another set of data that fit. James Wilkinson's baptism details do not appear to have survived.

James' death certificate from NZ, of which I have a copy, does not reveal any relevant information, apart from confirming that Elizabeth Harvey was his wife. It lists his fathers name as "unknown".

On another note, this article from the Irish times looks hopeful for the future of those lost records:

Staffordshire / 1851 census "Newcastle"- Newcastle under Lyme or Newcastle Upon Tyne?
« on: Friday 11 February 22 08:10 GMT (UK)  »
In an 1851 entry for MARY LILEY age 42, residence: St Michael, Stockwell, Lambeth, Surrey; her place of birth is given as "Newcastle". Husband is THOMAS LILEY, age 42, born Chelsea (Middlesex)
Her maiden name was Jackson (m Thomas Liley in 1831, Southwark St Giles, Camberwell)

Wondering if this is Newcastle Under Lyme
or Newcastle Upon Tyne?

She married Thomas Liley, whose sister had married a potter/tile maker (Ann Liley (b 1811) - Jesse Adams, m 25 Jul 1831 • Kensington St Mary Abbott, Middlesex); they lived in the Potteries, Notting Hill, which makes me think there may be a connection through the pottery industry in Staffordshire.

There appear to be a few candidates for Mary or Mary Ann Jackson in both towns born around that time. The marriage cert only describes her as "spinster"

Australia / 1859 North Melbourne - address, who was living with Mary?
« on: Saturday 05 February 22 02:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking to see who might have been living with a Mary McDonald (aged 19, living in Arden St North Melbourne at the time of her marriage in 1859 according to her marriage certificate - see excerpt from certificate attached). I suspect she may have been living with her parents Alexander and Ann. We cannot so far pin down her arrival date in Melbourne from Scotland, although she appears to be on the 1851 Scottish census. I suspect she may have come out together with her parents, as they are not on the 1861 Scottish census. Her husband Henry Michael McCaull (from Kingstown, Dublin) arrived in Melbourne from Britain on the "Miles Barton" in 1854 and was living in Geelong at the time of marriage - that begs the question how did they meet? An Alexander McDonald is a witness at her wedding. I'm wading through Sands-McDougall's 1860 Melbourne directory to see if an Alexander McDonald was still living in Arden St at the time, as the father seemed to have a business as a Calico printer - nope just found Arden St on page 85 and he is not there https://viewer.slv.vic.gov.au/?entity=IE13647144&mode=browse

A relative of mine also has been chasing this one up in the past. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=855371.0
