Family History Beginners Board / Martha Trotter - wrong name on death cert 1866
« on: Tuesday 14 February 23 12:06 GMT (UK)  »
I ordered a GRO PDF death cert for Martha Trotter aged 78 who died in Dec Qtr 1866, Pancras, 1B 69.
The cert has arrived but the name of the deceased clearly says Elizabeth Trotter.  I have been through the GRO indexes and can see no other possible cert that I could have been sent in error.

I looked online for an explanation of how the GRO registers and indexes have been compiled.  I read that local registrars would have sent copy registers to the GRO and then the indexes were compiled from that.  I can therefore see a potential for transcription errors when making a hand written copy of local registers to send to the GRO.  However, if it's correct that the indexes are compiled from the copy registers, I can't see how the index would have the right first name but the copy register have the wrong one?

If anyone can shed some light on this for me I would be very grateful.  Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Help identifying this uniform please
« on: Thursday 09 February 23 10:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to identify this photo which I have inherited.  One possibility is that he could be my grandmother's brother Arthur Wilkins who was born in 1887.  Unfortunately I don't know anything about military uniforms.  I know Arthur was in the Navy.  Does anyone know if this is a naval uniform?
Many thanks.

I am trying to understand how DNA Testing works but I have to admit to being thoroughly confused so I hope someone will be kind enough to help me.

My situation is that my Paternal GreatGrandfather was illegitimate.  I know from his birth cert and baptism record that his father was Philip Small.  My research has led to me to a Philip Small from Dundee 1845-1931, who I suspect could be my 2 x GreatGrandfather.

I have made contact with a person who is a direct descendant of Philip Small from Dundee, and  had also come to the conclusion that my GreatGrandfather could be the illegitimate child of their ancestor.

We are both happy to pay for DNA Testing but are unsure if it would definitely confirm if we share the same ancestor or not?

Many thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / George Corfe - Railway Accident 1882
« on: Monday 25 July 22 13:03 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor George Corfe died on Sept 13th 1882 at Guys Hospital.  He was 26 years old and a labourer on the London and Brighton Railway.  Cause of death was "ruptured liver by being jammed between a railway truck and platform at Willow Walk".  (I am not sure which part of the body got ruptured as that word on the death cert isn't too clear but I think it says liver.)  I believe Willow Walk was a goods depot near the Bricklayers Arms railway station in Southwark.

I would like to find out more about the accident.  I have found a few websites with archives of railway accidents but none of them mention this incident.  Possibly they are only for passenger fatalities and I'm assuming this was a work related death.  I also looked at newspaper archives but couldn't find anything.  If anyone could point me in the direction of anywhere else to look I would be very grateful.  Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Eliza Corfe 1857 - can't find birth record
« on: Monday 04 July 22 12:54 BST (UK)  »
I am struggling to find the birth record for Eliza Corfe.  She was christened on 31st Mar 1861 at Charterhouse St Thomas, Middlesex.  4 of her siblings were also christened that day.  Eliza's date of birth shows on the baptism records as 7th Oct 1857 but I can not find the entry on the BMD indexes.
Eliza appears to be the daughter of William Frederick Corfe and his second wife Julia Halliday. She is living with them in 1861 and 1871. I have found all the siblings on the GRO Indexes without any problem.
All I can think is that either her birth somehow got missed from the indexes, if that is possible, or that William & Julia took in the child of an unmarried relative and the birth was registered with a different surname.  William did have a sister Eliza born approx 1824 who never married.
Would be very grateful if anyone can help shed some light on this.

The Common Room / Overgrown churchyards
« on: Monday 20 June 22 17:29 BST (UK)  »
I was visiting a family grave yesterday at a council owned cemetery which is kept well maintained.  However to get into this cemetery you have to walk through an adjoining church graveyard.
The grass in this church graveyard has not been cut in over a year now.  Some of the grass is waist high and there are weeds and brambles all over the place making it impossible to access many of the graves.

The vicar claims that it is now Church of England policy throughout the country to stop maintaining churchyards in order to save money and help protect the environment.  The council say they have offered to maintain the churchyard at a subsidised rate but this proposal was rejected.  As it is not their responsibility and as they are also short of funds there is nothing else they can do.

I was curious as to whether this really is a countrywide policy so I'd be interested to know if anyone else has come across this happening anywhere outside of Lincolnshire.

Essex / Wicker family from Halstead
« on: Monday 13 June 22 11:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have begun a tree for the Wicker family from Halstead.  My husband is descended from Tobias Wicker and Sarah Root. This is my first research in Essex as I mainly deal with London and Scotland so I don't have much idea about what local resources might be available online to help me.

So far I have found parish records on FreeReg and some very helpful PDF indexes of some of the parish records from St Andrews Church in Halstead.  These have helped me quickly spot the baptisms of several of Tobias and Sarah's children.  I also have Trade Directories and I've ordered some books on the history of Halstead which look useful.  Lastly I have prison records which include a George Wicker.  There is a George Wicker on my tree but I'm not sure yet if he is the same one as there were two born around the same time.

If anyone else researching in the Halstead area can suggest any other resources I would be very grateful.

Thank you very much.

Family History Beginners Board / Eliza Fisher Coroners Inquest Surrey 1882
« on: Monday 04 April 22 11:03 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me please with a query about the availability of Coroners Inquest Reports?

I have been trying to track down the death of my 2xGGP Eliza Fisher b approx 1833.  I have received a possible death cert for her via a researcher who incorrectly ordered it.  However there is no family information on it to help me judge if this is my Eliza or not.

This Eliza Fisher died on 29th April 1882 at 42 Blackfriars Rd in the registration district St Saviour Surrey, Sub District Christ Church.  Female aged 48 years, occupation unknown, cause of death Natural Sudden Syncope.  Certificate received from William Carter Coroner for Surrey.  Inquest held 3rd May 1882.

I couldn't see anything in the London Newspaper Archives, and there are no Fishers at that address on the 1881 or 1891 census.  So I thought of trying to find the Inquest Report but I have no idea of how to go about it.

Thank you very much.

I have bought the wrong cert for Lydia King who died on 25th July 1859 at Arlsey.  She was one month old and the daughter of William King - Farm Labourer.  Informant Elizabeth Gregory.

Would be happy to pass on the PDF if this is your ancestor.
