Family History Beginners Board / Parish Register coverage
« on: Saturday 25 February 23 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
I can't see if this has been asked before - but there are various sites both free and paid which offer access to Parish Registers. Has there been any comparison done on which has the best coverage, or is it a case of having to check through each one? I'm asking as I've seen a few results which appear on one site but not another, and want to make sure if I am paying for something that I am paying for one which is likely to give the most coverage!

Surrey / Deaths of John and Mary Dawson
« on: Tuesday 07 February 23 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
Morning all,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall looking for two death records on the Parish Registers. Not sure if this is down to migration, not looking in the right places, or insufficient records / poor transcription, but hoping someone might be able to suggest a few things to help.

I have John Dawson, born in Walton-on-Thames in 1755, and Mary Jones, born in Chertsey in 1757. They marry in Chertsey in 1778, and then have a number of children there: Thomas (1779), John (born and died 1781), William (1782), James (1784), John (born and died 1787), then they move to Woking, where Mary is born 1790, and Richard in 1792.

I then see Thomas (born 1779) becoming an apprentice in Woking in 1794, and that's it.

I can't see the death of either John or Mary in Woking, or Surrey in my searches, and when widening out to surrounding counties, there are too many possibles. Their children drift towards Epsom and London, but this doesn't narrow anything down.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or are there known gaps in the Parish Records that have been digitised that mean I might need to go to the hard records to search?

The Common Room / Brick wall for death certificates
« on: Monday 17 October 22 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone, I'm hoping for a few ideas, or suggestions on cracking a brick wall I've hit - basically I'm looking for the deaths of two family members. They appear in a census, then vanish, so I'm looking at a 10 year timeframe, with common names (one of which appears to change), who move around a lot, and the most likely options I have tried have turned out to be wrong so far...

So; bit of background. The people are William Dawson, born 1822 in Newcastle, and his wife Mary Dean, born 1824 in Newcastle.

1843 Marriage Certificate – William Dawson (Grocer) of Newgate St and Mary Dean married. Fathers are Richard Dawson (stay maker) and James Dean (unclear occupation).
1848 Birth Cert Richard John Dawson born in Gainford, Durham to William Dawson (Police Officer) and Mary Dawson (Dean).
1850 Birth Cert - Thomas Heseltine Dawson born in Darlington, Durham to same.

1851 Census Gateshead: William Dawson (29, Newcastle-on-Tyne). Occupation: Police Officer, plus wife Mary Dawson (27, Newcastle) sons Richard John Dawson (2) born Gainford, Durham, and Thomas H Dawson (1) Darlington, Durham.

1852 Birth Cert - Louisa Dawson born in Gateshead
1854 Birth Cert – Eliza Dawson born in Bishops Auckland, William Dawson is now an Innkeeper.
1860 Birth Cert - William Dawson born in Birmingham, William Dawson is now a Journeyman Painter, and address Tennant St.

1861 Census - Tennant Street Birmingham: William Dawson 39 (Painter and Glazier) b. Newcastle, wife Mary Dawson 37, b. Newcastle, sons Richard William Dawson 12 b. Gainford, Thos H Dawson 11 b. Darlington, Durham, Louisa Dawson 8 b. Gateshead, Eliza. Dawson 5 b. Bishops Auckland, Wm Dawson 9 months b. Birmingham.

1870 Marriage Certificate – Richard John Dawson (Artist) of South Hill Road, Liverpool, and Sarah Jane Hewitt of South Hill Road married. Fathers are Charles Dawson (Painter) and Thomas Hewitt (Shipwright). Louisa Dawson is a Witness.

1871 Census - West Derby, Liverpool: Mary Dawson 48 (Head) b. Northumberland, Thomas H Dawson 21 b. Co Durham, William 10 b. Warwickshire. Mary Dawson is shown as head, but occupation is Wife, not widow?

1872 Marriage Cert - Louisa Dawson married to Henry Martin in West Derby. Father recorded as Charles William Dawson, a Painter. He is not shown as deceased, although Henry Martin’s father is. Thomas Dawson is present as a witness.
1872 Marriage Cert - Thomas Dawson is married in Liverpool, Father shown as Charles William Dawson, a Painter. Eliza is present as a witness.
1877 Marriage Cert - Elizabeth married to a ships steward where father is recorded as William Charles Dawson, deceased.

1881 Census - no sign of Mary Dawson.

So I have William Dawson, also known as Charles Dawson, William Charles Dawson and Charles William Dawson, who is alive in 1861 for the census and recorded as deceased in 1877, but probably dies before 1871 as Mary is shown as the Head in the census, and Mary herself, who disappears after 1871.

There are no clear deaths of either in Liverpool, and given they have moved from Newcastle, around Durham, to Birmingham and then Liverpool, there is no consistency in location to use as a guide.

Does any one have any suggestions or tips as to how to narrow the scope down, or suggest where I may have gone wrong or overlooked something?

England / Marriage Witnesses pre-1837
« on: Tuesday 11 October 22 16:23 BST (UK)  »
Was there any particular requirement for witnesses to Marriages recorded in Parish Registers?

I ask as I've seen several marriages where the witnesses were not obviously family - or where one was (generally the father) and the other is totally unknown to me. Would there have been any qualification (as in to know the people being married for a certain time/be resident in the same parish) or could anyone be the witness? Or were there any traditions in place as to who might be a witness when a family member could not?

Census and Resource Discussion / 1871 Census
« on: Wednesday 05 October 22 10:11 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone might have a definitive answer; I'm looking at the 1871 Census, and found Mary Dawson listed as Head, but also as Wife in occupation. I can't find her husband; they appear together in the 1861 census, and the whole family apart from him is present in 1871.

In the marriages of their children in 1870 and 1872, he is listed as the father (but not mentioned as being deceased), and in a marriage in 1877, listed both as father and deceased.

I assume that if she is listed as Head in 1871, he has died, and they have not recorded it in the marriage certificates, but would she not then be listed as a widow in the Census?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1841 Census occupation
« on: Friday 09 September 22 08:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello; looking for some assistance deciphering an occupation in the 1841 census. Context is location in County Durham, head of household is a Farmer, but the residents may be linked to mining.

Its a poor scan, handwriting is hard to read, the enumerator has marked over it, and its not easy!

There are two occupations in the image, the top one has two words I think, second starting with an L. This is the one I am interested in, but have attached the second in case in helps!
