Lanarkshire / Lookup please - Scottish Landowners 1873 - completed
« on: Friday 12 June 09 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Would someone with a familyrelatives.com  subscription be good enough to look up the return for - James Mitchell  Lanark - in the Scottish Landowners records for 1873? The free initial search brings back only one return and I'd be grateful to see what it contains.
Thank you

Lanarkshire / Died Salsburgh, Shotts - buried where?
« on: Sunday 11 November 07 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
If someone died in Salsburgh, which Church of Scotland graveyard would he/she be likely to be buried in, and are there  memorial inscriptions for that graveyard?
thanks

Before the Rootschat computer clitch on Sunday, someone had answered the above question, which has now disappeared. However I am looking for information about Thomas and Jean Mitchell. They appear in the 1851 census in Salsburgh (also in 1841). They are brother and sister aged 68 and 57. I cannot find any death records for them after 1855 in the area, and I am wondering, given their ages, if they may have died before registration came in in 1855. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Armed Forces / Mentioned in dispatches - Gazette help please.
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 11:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have a newspaper clipping that says my (now dead) father was mentioned in dispatches during WW2, but no details. He would never discuss it. I would like to find out why he was mentioned.

I have trawled through all the "John Mitchell" London Gazette online entries for the 39-48 period, without success.

He was in the RAF and does appear in later Gazettes when he was commissioned in 1955 (issue dated 15/11/55), and his subsequent promotions and retirement are also there. His number then was - 1059273 John Mitchell. A search on that number only comes up with these later entries.

Can anyone help please?

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Wrexham Parish Register birth lookup
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 21:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate Charles Garner, born in Wrexham and his wife Eliza born there too.
Census listings for 1871, 1881 & 1891 have him living in Salford but born in Wrexham, the census ages range from a birth date of 1814 to 1821, he died in 1891.

His wife Eliza (no maiden name known) was also born in Wrexham, about 1823. I would also like to find her birth record and also their marriage, I have had no luck so far.

As far as I can find their first child was born in Salford about 1845, so a marriage just before that time may be a possibility, maybe back in Wrexham before moving to Salford?

Thanks if anyone can help.

Argyllshire / Annie McKechnie b1861 Islay mother Janet Ferguson
« on: Thursday 01 June 06 10:33 BST (UK)  »
I am trying without success to find any birth record of Annie McKechnie.

When she married my great grandfather in 1884 Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, she was 23. On the entry for parents, there is a space where the father should be and an entry for Janet Ferguson mother (deceased).

In a later census return she has put down Islay as where she was born.
I have searched the Scotlandspeople birth database for surrounding years and there is nothing. (including McEachern and Ferguson as a surname).

My father also spoke of his grandmother coming from the islands and possibly something to do with fishing, but I never asked him to be more precise.

Can anybody help?
Thanks.

Lanarkshire / Parish Register Help 1795/6 - Birth of John Mitchell in Shotts
« on: Wednesday 31 May 06 15:52 BST (UK)  »
I am having difficulty finding any birth details for John Mitchell, the 1851 census for Lesmahagow, says he was born in Shotts, Lanark. His age then gives a date of about 1795/6.

I am also looking for his death details: he likely died in Lesmahagow before 1855 and certainly after the 1851 census. (I know he is listed as 'deceased' on his son's marriage certificate in 1856).

He married in 1818 Marion Scott, she also died between the same years John died.
Thanks.

Ian
