Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Just one word...
« on: Friday 26 January 24 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
...in my Father's school report of 1925 has me baffled!

Can anyone assist with deciphering the last word in the phrase: "He is a bright boy, keen on his work & intelligent in ????"

I've racked my brains to determine what it might be, no doubt it will be obvious when someone resolves it!

Berkshire / Slough Observer Newspaper Archive

Can anyone please suggest where I might be able to view an online copy or order a hard copy of the June 1st 1984 edition of what was just called 'The Observer' back then but I believe is now The Slough Observer? I've had no luck finding a means to access it.

I have a poor photocopy of an article on Tom Brown Tailors of Eton from that issue but the photographs are too dark to be visible and it's one of those I need.

I have a possible location address for someone I'm researching, it's in the subject line of this post.
Is there any way I can find out: a) where it might have been; and b) who actually lived there around 1872 ?
The name it's in relation to is Edward Lower Eliot (one 'T'), possibly born in Cornwall.

Also, has anyone ever come across the name 'Lower' as a second name in any of their research?

Thanks.

The Common Room / Edwardian Photo Collection - name Hazelgrove?
« on: Friday 01 December 23 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
Back in the 1970s, I acquired a collection of glass plate negatives dating from around 1900, by my estimation. Can't remember where I got them, possibly an auction, but I've carted them around for years without doing anything with them.

There's not much to help identify their original owner except one headstone and some possibly identifiable places and faces - but there are an awful lot of those so I hope someone may get some pictures of their ancestors one day.

I did a cursory search on Ancestry for the Hazelgrove name 4 years ago, but nothing that can positively identify them. Possibly they have a connection with Worthing, maybe Sussex generally.

I've included three, hopefully, but you can view the entire set here:

Sharing them in case anyone spots something connected to their research. If they are of interest, get in touch.

Family History Beginners Board / HAMMANS Family Tree

Hi all,

My brother and I have been researching our family name off and on since the 1980s. We've amassed an immense amount of information over the years and now - with me 73 and my brother 87 - we've decided to put it to rest before either of us are, so I am putting it in book form.

The rather unique spelling 'HammANS' has made it somewhat easier, but of course we've had to take into account all the Hamans, Hammond, Hammonds, Haymans, etc, it has been incorrectly transcribed as over the years.

There are around four generations of bakers in our line but we've hit the familiar brick wall in verifying with any certainty where we originated from. Likely candidates are Ashby St Ledgers, Northants, and Oxfordshire (Marcham, West Hanney)

So the names of particular interest to us include HAMMANS (obviously), POITEVIN, GARRETT and ELLIOT (one 'T'). If anyone else is looking into my own or anyone else's name from our lineage then feel free to make contact.
