Staffordshire / James family of Caverswall (circa 1500s)
« on: Sunday 17 March 24 07:59 GMT (UK)  »
In tracing another line of my family back (in this case my maternal grandmother's), I've found that the James line corresponding to me dates back to Dilhorne until the 17th century and Caverswall around the Elizabeth period, with a Thomas James (b. 1573) the earliest semi-confirmed direct ancestor. Sifting through FreeReg, I noticed that several Jameses inhabited Caverswall beginning around the mid-16th century, with the oldest record listed being a death record for "Gilbert James" dated 1552; I strongly suspect that this line is Thomas's. Is there any information as to Gilbert's birthdate, when the family came to Caverswall and what town/county they came from beforehand?

Staffordshire / Richard Deavill/Deville, b.1592

Currently searching for more details on a Richard Deville (alternately "Deavill" or "Devell") born in (or around) 1592. Several records list him as married to Margaret Deville and as the father of a John Deville (christened 8 March 1617), but I can find no details on his place of birth (although he seems to have inhabited Marchington in his twenties) or parents.

Family History Beginners Board / Devells or Devilles in Staffordshire

Based on recent research, I've assembled this rough lineage on my mother's side:

-   Samuel Davall (1766 – 1855) (Stone, Staffs.)
-   Thomas Davall (1715 -1779) (Milwich, Staffs.)
-   Thomas Deavile (1675 – 1737) (Colton, Staffs.)
-   Thomas Deville (1640 - ?) (Marchington, Staffs.)
-   John Deville (1617 - ?) (Marchington, Staffs.)
-   Richard Deville (1592 - ?) (Marchington, Staffs.)
-   Robert Devile (1561 – 1625) (Marchington or Tamworth)

From what I can garner, different "Devells" seem to have lived in Tamworth and Leek during the early 16th century; the oldest record I can find on this is a Richard or "Richardi" Devell born circa 1480. Is this roughly the same family? Has anyone found any further details?

Family History Beginners Board / Which "Davall" line?
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently been delving into my maternal ancestry (building on the work begun by one of my aunts); based on the records I've uncovered online, the earliest confirmed ancestor I can vouch for is a Thomas Davall born in Stone, Staffordshire somewhere between 1725 and 1730 (Mary Davall/Daventry is listed as his wife and Samuel Davall (middle name possibly Daintrey or Daventry) as his son, born 1766) but can find no earlier information. Although a number of "Deavels", "Davilles", "Divalls" and "Davells" are recorded as inhabiting 18th-century England (some within Staffordshire), I can't find any data linking "our" Thomas to any of these lines and wondered if anyone else could help?
