Census and Resource Discussion / What and where else can i try?
« on: Thursday 06 July 23 16:07 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon
I'd like some advice on where else I can look for a particular marriage please. I've hunted and hunted, and even thought maybe they didnt get married, or were married to other people, and had to live together instead. In the end i've become 'search blind' if you understand what i mean and so i thought maybe someone here can get me back on track.

the marriage is between
Charles William Ward born 27 Jan 1857 in Deptford, London, Packer. Father - Charles Stephen Ward, Pork Butcher. Mother - Elizabeth Sarah Townsend. Both parents born in Deptford, London.
and
Sarah Ann Joyce born 6 July 1855 in Bow, London. Father - Joseph Joyce, Engine driver at factory, born in Shellow, Willingale, Esesx. Mother - Eleanor Penten, born Gresham, Norfolk.

I have checked all sorts of areas, even omiting a parish name when looking up marriage records to give as broad a search as possible. I've tried foreign records. I've looked at siblings of William and Sarah to see where they all married. i've ordered birth certificate information for their children to look at Sarah's surname details.
I think I have narrowed their possible marriage date down to either 1874 or 1875 because.....
Sarah Ann was a witness to her brother Joseph's marriage on 2 Aug 1874. She signed the register using the surname Joyce, so was not married then.
William and Sarah's first child registered was Clara Louisa Ward born 30 Oct 1875. On the birth documents under the heading 'mother' were the words Sarah Ann Ward formerly Joyce.

I know it's possible Sarah just used the surname Ward and wasnt married, but if she was then her marriage to William took place between Aug 1874 and Oct 1875.

It could be that the records were destroyed but I'm hoping they've just been accidentally missed from any transcribing. So is there some advice that anyone can give me to try and find this record. Anywhere else I can look, apart from physically travelling to look at various parish records? Unfortunately I'm unable to do that at the moment.

Thank you all :-)

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Catherine Lyons
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I am doing a bit of research about the siblings and their families of my direct ancestors. One of these, Aaron Gomes da Costa (born about1835 in Spitalfields) married a Catherine Lyons and it is her I am trying to find more information about.
Their marriage certificate 1st August 1860 in Whitechapel shows Catherine's father to be Alexander Lyons, a General Dealer. They appear to be of Jewish faith considering who married them, and this would tally with many of my direct paternal ancestors. I have also found Catherine (born about 1838), her parents Alexander and Julia, and some siblings, in the 1841 census. from there, apart from finding Catherine and Aaron in later census from 1881 onwards, I have drawn a blank on all of the others. I cant find a birth for Catherine or her siblings. I can find births for all the names but the mother's surnames are all different.
Can anyone help me at least narrow down Catherine's birth or her mother's maiden name, or even some proof of her siblings birth? I have seen some ancestral trees on Ancestry.com which suggest a child was born to Catherine and Aaron but again I am not convinced as I cant find definative proof.
Thank you so much

Radnorshire Lookup Requests / William King and Mary Chedzoy
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 09:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William King b c1782 and a Mary Chedzoy b c1785 who had their children Charlotte b1803, William b1805 and Mary b1807 recorded as born in Comtyther (Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr) Radnorshire, Wales. The LDS archive center suggested (after a fruitless search for William and Mary born in that area) that i check Parish records as often there are recorded 'welcome' transcripts for new people. This may give me an idea where they came from. If anyone has any ideas or can look for something like this i would be really grateful as i have come to a halt at the moment.

Ireland / Cornelius Milan - help!
« on: Monday 13 November 06 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have found the Irish ancestry sites a mine field when i havent a clue exactly where an ancester of mine Cornelius Milan came from so thought i would beg for some help.

Cornelius Milan (Millin? etc) was born around 1822 somewhere in Ireland. He is the father of Mary Ann Milan born 1861 (married to Joseph Martin) in Spitalfields, London. His wife/partner is Mary Lenrigan i think but am not sure. I have found Mary Milan's family to be difficult to trace back but am hoping someone here will prove me wrong? I really want to know exactly where in Ireland Cornelius came from so i can try and find why he came to England.
Any ideas about any of them gratefully received please.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Philip Petslin
« on: Sunday 15 October 06 14:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can decifer the surname i have for a person in the 1861 census born in Norfolk. The Joyce family living in Bromely, Middlesex are part of my ancesters but they had Philip, widower, born Grishem, Norfolk aged 77 at their address on the night of the census.(I hope i have attached the page correctly to this message) His surname has been transcribed as Petslin but when i search for him in earlier censuses i cant find him. i have tried variations on the name in Norfolk area to no avail. Eleanor Joyce wife of the head of the house was also born in Grishem, Norfolk so i believe they may be related (I hope).  Any ideas on the surname would be gratefully received please.

World War One / JC Martin WW1 again sorry
« on: Sunday 01 October 06 14:02 BST (UK)  »
I have hunted for my previous post about his and cant find it sorry...hence why i have had to do a new one.

Some may recall i am hunting for the WW1 details of my grandfather that my uncle has lost. He was Joseph Charles Martin born Mile End, London 1898. I was told he had a massive arguement with his mother when he was 16 and left home never to return. We presume he then joined up and I know he served with an Artillery regiment in India and possibly Egypt. I cant get to Kew for the time being and so am trying to narrow the regiment down and having found two JC Martins in the Artillery who survived WW1  how can i find which one is the correct one? One is the Royal Garrison Artillery and one is the Royal Field Artillery.
I have spent ages trying to find which regiments served in India and Egypt  and i know he was never in France, but to be honest i dont know how to look on the army sites. I have got confused because so some were disbanded after the war etc. Can anyone please help me.
(My father told me today he remembers my grandfather talking about  horses pulling guns and he also thinks grandad talked about driving tanks?)

World War Two / WW2 Joseph C Martin
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Due to the family losing my grandfather's WW1 details i have had problems finding out anything. (Joseph Charles Martin b 1898 London - vague i know lol) I have had a bright idea as my father mentioned he thought Joe served in the same regiment during WW2. I wondered whether there was an absent voters list for that period or electoral roll details that i could access. I know he lived in Bournemouth with his wife Olive and i think i may have the address. Surely i must be able to find some information?

Getting desperate now Carla

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / David Martin m Emily Ward
« on: Monday 11 September 06 21:18 BST (UK)  »
Desperately seeking Emily Ward details (b 1879) . She is my great grandmother and i know her and David (b1877)  had 10 children, one of which was my grandfather Joseph b 1898.
I know David was born in Bethnal Green. I have found what i think is their marriage details in Poplar, London ? but it would make her pregnant with my grandfather if i am right. I have been under the impression that most of David's side were Jewish and as a result much of the ancestors' details for that side of the family can be found in the bevis Marks Synagogue in London but that hasnt helped me with finding out about Emily's family.

Can anyone give me some pointers apart from trying to get the marriage certificate. They lived in London i know as that was where my grandfather was born but i cant find them in the census?

Help!  :(
