Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A departed pet
« on: Wednesday 07 June 23 00:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone, it's been a bit since I've been on here. Hope all is well.

A friend recently had to say goodbye to her beloved kitty, and I was hoping one of our magic restorers might be able to remake a photo. Athena was a white/beige cat and as such I'm not sure she'd have a lot of definition. But I was hoping someone could make her into a watercolour-looking portrait. There are businesses that offer this sort of thing but they are at the moment unaffordable.

Please let me know what you think.

Cheers and many thanks,
China

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A frame for this please?
« on: Monday 21 February 22 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters, this is my friend with her husband George who passed away the day after Christmas. I'm  hoping someone could do a nice oval vignette of them, perhaps including their hands, and tidy the background. She is leaning in a bit of an odd posture, not sure what's going on there, so I thought an oval crop would look more natural.

Very grateful if you could help!

Cheers,
China

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Background removal if you please
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 03:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all and heartfelt wishes for a good new year. It has been a rough couple.

A friend passed away the day after Christmas and his wife posted this on her page. Such a handsome fellow! I was hoping someone would be able to remove the tacky background and replace it with a bit of beauty.

The couple ran a lovely Victorian tearoom and many events were attended in period costume. I may post one or two later if you don't mind.

Many thanks from me,
China

Technical Help / Microsoft Paint
« on: Saturday 22 February 20 22:47 GMT (UK)  »
How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways  :P

Hi gang, I was using MS Paint to change the background and name blocks on bits of Ancestry tree to print. I used the background fill (the little dripping paint pot icon) to change the background from gray to white, and the name blocks from white to green.

The first few worked perfectly.

Then this started and I have no idea why, or how to fix it. Just blobs everywhere, and weird curves. The image is a screenshot. Any ideas?

Cheers,
China

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / The Allison baby....yet again! Poll
« on: Friday 24 January 20 00:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya, gang!

This baby has been on the board, off and on, for about 14 years now. Again I'm asking opinions.

Allison & Allison is the photographer. All Allison photos have numbers written on the back which correspond with the daybook entries. Who ordered what, and how many, and whether it was paid etc etc.

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland has the daybooks. Someone very kindly did a lookup of the number for me and this photo was ordered by a M'Caldin family of The Diamond, Monaghan. It was paid on 20 August 1902.

I eventually identified the family, but not sure which baby. Would it be
1)   Cecil William, born 30 December 1899, making him just over two and a half...or
2)   Dorothy Grace, born 3 May 1901, making her about fifteen months

Keep in mind the baby clothes weren't very gender-specific in those days and most babies looked like girls  :)

So, your best guesses please!

Cheers,
China

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dusty Uncle George at Admiralty Arch
« on: Tuesday 10 September 19 01:45 BST (UK)  »
Hello gang  :D

I wonder if someone could kindly foof the dust off Uncle George, seen here at Admiralty Arch in 1944. He is wearing a Canadian Black Watch uniform, on leave. The photo was taken by my dad, also on leave from a Canadian navy corvette. Neither knew the other was there and they met unexpectedly and joyfully in Traf  Square  :D

Many thanks for anything you can do for this lovely old pic!

Cheers,
China

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A story, and a mystery
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 06:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi gang, long time no post  :)

A bit of excitement in my corner. Had a brilliant trip to England and Scotland, and met a couple of  distant cousins (Rootschat's sallytay, and a previously unknown cousin from NZ who popped up just a couple of weeks before our trip  :) )

Anyway, the story. My g-g-great grandfather owned a pub in Mirfield, WRY. Apparently he purchased it from his brother's estate, when the brother died in 1814. His name was Thomas Jubb, and his brother who died was William Jubb. The pub was called The Flower Pot, and it's still there.

So, for the first time ever, I was able to visit Mirfield. And the Flower Pot. The outside was okay, but the inside was completely redone in 2012. Alas, not an original brick on the inside.

So, I had a look at the outside. Kind of ordinary, but there was a block of cottages attached. Lovely old weathered texture of the bricks. I took a photo of a bit of wall..........and then looked higher up. Here's what I saw.

I was quite literally jumping up and down when I called OH to come and look  :)

So. All my research, totally validated and carved in stone  :) But it was very high up the wall and this is the best photo I could get.

And I can't read the second line. Can anyone sharpen it up so we can see what it says?

I am still glowing over my trip to England, where my heart lies. It had been too long.

Cheers,
China

World War One / Please have a butcher's :-)
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
Here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=765892.0

He seems to be Royal Irish Rifles. Apparently a Lance Corporal, is that right? And WWI, is that right?

He might be a Campbell from Belfast, but I don't know. I have had that photo my whole life, and am trying to sort out who it might be.

Many thanks,
China
