Durham Completed Look up Requests / Raine birth
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 19:21 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking to apply for the birth certificate of Norman RAINE.  I know from family members that he was born on 16 Sept 1918.  His parents were living in Sunderland and his mother's maiden name was DUKE.  But I can't find any record of him on the Indexes in Findmypast, FreeBMD or Ancestry.  Am I doing something wrong?  Any help from more experienced researchers than me would be appreciated.

The Common Room / From miner to teacher: How easy? **COMPLETED**
« on: Thursday 14 June 07 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm fairly new to family history, so apologies if this seems a stupid question.

My question is about moving from one occupation to another.  In the 1861 census my great grandfather, aged 16, was a tin miner, just like his dad, in a small village in the far west of Cornwall.  10 years later, the 1871 census shows he was a schoolmaster, a profession he kept for the rest of his life.  I have a photo of him as the head teacher of the village elementary school.

My understanding is that in the mid 19th century, it would have been unusual for someone to move from being a manual worker in a traditional Cornish industry like tin mining, to being a member of a respected middle class profession.  Or is this not so?  How did someone move classes like this?  Or am I missing something?

My thanks for your time and any comments you would like to make.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1871 census Norris
« on: Monday 28 May 07 16:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I wonder if some kind person could help.  I've looked but failed to find the following family on the 1871 census:

Sarah Elizabeth Norris, born Finsbury, Middlesex, July 1866; father Thomas and mother Sarah (nee Cecily).  Thomas was a blacksmith's journeyman in 1866 but later became a carman.  There may also have been another daughter called Alice. They are almost certainly living somewhere in London.

The only family coming close to that description that I can find is one in Waltham, Kent, but that is definitely wrong.

You can guess that Norris is often transcribed incorrectly.

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Booker 1901 census
« on: Monday 11 December 06 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone have more luck than I have in finding Reuben Booker b. 1842 Staveley, Derbyshire and wife Mary b.1843 Dore, Derbyshire on the 1901 census?

They are both on the 1881 census living in Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield.  In 1891 Reuben, a furnaceman, is still in Brightside, given as married (not widower) but is a lodger and not with Mary.

Have looked for Mary's death 1881 onwards, and Reuben's 1891 on, but no success.  I want to be sure they aren't still alive in 1901 before looking a lot harder for their deaths.

Any help anyone could make, much appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Booker 1891 census
« on: Saturday 11 November 06 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find George Booker and family on the 1891 census.

On the 1881 census, George (42), labourer in steel works, wife Sarah Ann (36) b. Sheffield and Sarah's children from her first marriage, Harry Powell (11) and Arthur Powell (9) are living in Attercliffe, Sheffield.  George says he was born in Attercliffe, but on other censuses he says it was Staveley. Ref: RG11/4666 folio 113, pg 18.

But I can't find any of this family on the 1891 census.  Can anyone help, please?

Other Countries / Guyana birth 1925 *COMPLETED*
« on: Monday 06 November 06 00:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace the birth of my grandfather who I believe was born in British Guiana (now called Guyana) in 1925.

Does anyone know how I can get a copy of a birth certificate for someone born in this former British colony?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Samuel b. 1814
George b. 1816

I don't know how many were alive in 1841 or how many had changed their name through marriage.

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Hi

Isabella Haywood appears with my Homer family on the 1891 census as an adopted daughter age 13 (RG12/3848 folio 70 pg 16) living in Rotherham and born in Sheffield.

I can't find Isabella on the 1881 census and would like to know more about her.  Is she a relative, was she a neighbour, or what?

Any help in finding her on the 1881 census very much appreciated.
