Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Birth register1840/41
« on: Thursday 16 November 06 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
can someone help? I have full search access to Ancestry but am stuck trying to find the Birth register entry for one James or Thomas Parsons.

He appears on the 1841 census as Thomas Parsons, 6mo old, born Kent(1841 England Census > Kent > Bromley > District 4 page 3).

In 1851 he appears as  Jas Thos Long st Parsons,  10 yr old, born, Bromley Kent.(1851 England Census > Kent > Bromley > District 1b page 4).

I am hoping that the birth certificate will explain the "Long", Mother's maiden name perhaps? and the "st" - surely not St as in Saint?

Many thanks

Dee

Completed Census Requests / Info on 1873 marriage cert
« on: Thursday 28 September 06 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I have a couple of marriage certificates from the later half of the 19th century and would like to understand some of the conventions used.
For example:-
 1) If the bride's father was dead at the time of marriage would "deceased" always be written alongside his name?

 2) On one certificate the bride's father (deceased) has an occupation of "gentlemen" and deceased is not mentioned. On all previous census records his occupation was Ag Lab (agricultural labourer). Is this apparent occupation change likely? Or could it have been deemed polite as he was deceased at the time?

Occupation Interests / Occupation, Watermen - 1841 census
« on: Tuesday 26 September 06 09:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
we have traced an ancestor (Richard Loft Raspison (Raspira) in the 1841 census of Gravesend. He has the occupation of "Waterman".

Before I get too excited about his occupation I would like to know if the occupation "waterman" is generic for anyone who worked on the water or are all watermen associated with the trade and apprenticeship scheme that is well documented elsewhere.

Are the watermen records available online for searching? All links I have so far found have been to lists on CD Rom or require a journey to the Guildhall library.

Dorset Lookup Requests / 1841 Census or Marriage Look up help
« on: Friday 22 September 06 13:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've been struggling to find either Joshua Hodder (born abt 1811 in Morecombelake Dorset) or his wife Sarah (born abt 1809 in Bradpole Dorset.

In 1851 they were living in Charmouth, Dorset.

I've found them both in the 1851 and 1861 census but can find no other record in either BMD registers nor 1841 census

I've tried to think of possible transcription typos eg stodder, itodder to no available and have tried wildcard searches on christian and surnames

Any assistance with birth or marriage data very welcome.

TIA

Armed Forces / Info on SWB List
« on: Wednesday 20 September 06 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone show me an example of what I can expect to find on the SWB list?
I have found the Medal Card of my great grandfather, William George Hodder Suffolk Regiment, and was already aware that he came home with a metal plate in his head.

Will the list give me any indication of how, when or where the injury occured?

It would help to know what extra info is available before I make a trip to Kew

TIA
Dee
