Family History Beginners Board / Reviving/Restarting Old Topic
« on: Friday 16 September 05 14:11 BST (UK)  »
I had posted a topic (I think it was last year) about doing Look Ups for people in the USA.  The topic is still there though now it is locked.

I got away from genealogy for a few months but I am back now and really getting into again so I thought I would pick up again on taking requests.  Can I start a new topic or is there a way to revive my old topic and revise it?

Thanks for the help!

Scotland / Looking for an Esther Porter and James Liddell
« on: Wednesday 08 September 04 21:32 BST (UK)  »
Thought I'd try a hand and see if anyone could help out here.  Most of my roots from England/Scotland/Wales are from pretty far back, the 1600-1700's, but it is hard being so far away to get solid facts of any kind, and I am sure that solid facts from those times were not very many.

Anyway I am trying to find more out about an Esther Porter born Bet 1718 and 1725 in Scotland, she came to the USA and died somewhere in South Carolina, most people seem to say around Abbeville.  She married a James Liddell (varient spellings: Leddell, Liddel, Liddle, etc)

James is said to be born around 1712 probably also in Scotland, he also died in South Carolina, possibly Abbeville.

They are said to have been married in Abbeville South Carolina and had 9 children.

But I am curious more about their dates of birth and possible parents on them.  How could I go about looking this up?  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Marie Heft Ontario, Canada Census before 1881
« on: Friday 03 September 04 13:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello...

I am looking for Marie (Mary) Heft b. Ontario, Canada abt 1864.  I don't know if Ontario had a census before the 1881 but would appreciate any help.  We have been trying to find out who her parents are.  All we know is that they were born in Germany/Prussia.  She had two siblings named Frederick (Fred) Heft b. 14 Nov 1869 probably in Ontario, Canada and Lena (or Lenna) Heft b. 28 Nov. 1868.

In the 1880 US Census Marie Heft is already in the USA, Lenna Heft is living with relatives.

Thanks for any help!

Family History Beginners Board / Researching in the 1600-1700's
« on: Thursday 26 August 04 07:46 BST (UK)  »
I have found a great number of my family coming from England, Wales, and Scotland.  But most of them came over somewhere between the late 1600's and the mid 1700's.  How is it that you go about finding documentation on these people so far back and not being able to travel there yourself or pay the fees of a researcher?

I have quite some names/dates but I don't have any proof as to where people came up with these dates and since most of it is on-line when I e-mail the person with the information I just get that they got it from someone else who got it from someone else etc.  I want to have some hard facts, as best as I can to support these names/dates/places etc.

United States of America / Looking for Family and Immigration Information
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 12:54 BST (UK)  »
We are trying to find out where exactly my 2 greats grandfather immigrated from.  We know it was Sweden around 1881/1882 but we would love to find out more about who the rest of his family was.

Here is the information that we do have on him...

Lawrence Benjamin Wilber (also spelled Wilbur) b. @1860-1861 in Sweden d. 12 January 1933 in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts

we know he had 2 wives, the second one was named Sara and we are pretty sure he was not married before he moved to the USA.  We have no idea what port in came in through or where in Sweden he originated from.

Also a peculiarity is that Wilber is actually English, so did he Americanize it?  He was from Sweden, every census lists list and that he spoke Swedish.  He donated land to establish a Swedish church even.

The Common Room / Does anyone know of...
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 09:51 BST (UK)  »
... a good message board that deals more as well with genealogy is America or other countries?  I do have lines in Scotland, Wales, and England, but my family has been so long in America that I need to finish fleshing it out there.  And of course then finding the information I need once the family goes back overseas where they orginated from.

Montgomeryshire / Trefeglyws
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 08:46 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone knows of a good site about the history of the welsh town of TREFEGLWYS?  Some of my ancestors are said to have come from there.  I have some information on part of my line but I would like to better research it and have copies of any proof possible.

The family name is Benbow (also seen as Benbowe, Bembow).  Part of the family left Wales for America in the first half of the 1700's.

Thanks for your help!

Europe / European Research outside Great Britian
« on: Tuesday 27 July 04 16:02 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if this is in the wrong place on the board first off I am not sure where to post it exactly.

I noticed on the board here you list England, Scotland, Ireland area but nothing for the main part of Europe.  Is there just not a demand for it or is the board specifically more for the USA/Great Britian area?

I am just curious as some of my lines come from areas such as Germany, Poland, Italy, France, and Sweden (as well as England, Scotland, and Wales).

I'd love to learn more about doing research in Europe if that is possible.

Thanks.

United States of America / Tips/Ideas... I am at a dead end with ideas here!
« on: Tuesday 27 July 04 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone!

First off I am not really new to genealogy.  I grew up with it.  My grandparents (on my mother's side) started doing research in the 1950's and then my parents took over a bit in the 1970's and 1980's.  Now I am picking up where they have all left off but of course most of what is left are more difficult areas to research.

Anyway for this post I am looking for tips/ideas on how to locate some information.  Mainly on a great grandmother.  We have her name, date of birth, state of birth, when she married, date of death, place of death, etc but all we know about her parents are that they were born in Texas.  I am not sure aside from looking through every page of the 1900 census (where she would have been at home with her parents) what to do.  We don't even know if she had siblings.

She is very recent in history yet so hard to find.  Since we only know that she was born in Texas I don't even know how to go about finding a birth certificiate for her.

Any help would be appriciated.  Thanks!

Sincerely,
Megan
