Technical Help / Backing up to an External Hard Drive
« on: Friday 17 February 12 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
At the moment I back up all my family history to a memory stick or an external hard drive.
I have decided to buy a new external hard drive and was wondering if anyone knows the advantages or disadvantages of using an external hard drive that I would connect to the laptop all the time I am working and it saves and backs up while the laptop is being used.
Is that better than saving the whole project at the end of the day?
Any help would be much appreciated.

First let me say that I am not requesting neither am I offering to do look ups.

I am unable to find the Savoy Hotel in the 1911 census.

I am doing an address search and I have entered every street in the vicinity of the Savoy Hotel of the Strand, London.

I have tried as many different spellings as I can think of but have drawn a complete blank.

The hotel must have had numerous 'live in' staff and many guests staying on the night of the 1911 census.

I am having to do an address search as I don't have enough details for a person search, but if I see a name and where that person was born I may be able to carry on my research.

If anyone is able to give me a clue as to where I can find the Savoy Hotel in the census I should be very grateful.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Marriage of Stephen SHEARS
« on: Friday 04 July 08 19:26 BST (UK)  »
I do hope that some kind person will be able to help me.

I am looking for a marriage between Stephen Shears / Sheers and Susannah.
Stephen was born in South Hill, Cornwall in 1802 and Susannah was also born there in 1806.
Their first daughter Mary Ann was born in 1828 at East Stonehouse, Devon. Three more children were born in 1830, 1831 and 1834, so all births were before civil registration.
Stephen Shears died on 8th March 1851.

I can find no record of a marriage in Devon, and no record in the transcripts on the Lynher Parishes History Web Site that includes South Hill and and a few surrounding villages. If they were in fact married, maybe it was at a different village in Cornwall, but I don't know how to find out where, as I live rather a long way from the Cornwall County Record Office.

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thank you for reading this.

Regards, siskin.

Technical Help / Requests permission
« on: Thursday 24 April 08 12:17 BST (UK)  »
When ever I switch on my laptop there is a program that flashes orange on the bottom tool bar requesting my permission to continue. It is nothing to do with me, so I just cancel it, but how can I get rid of it permanently.
As you can probably guess I am not very computer literate!!!  So any help in laymans terms would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Family History Book for a 10 year old
« on: Monday 21 April 08 13:07 BST (UK)  »
My Grandson has expressed an interest in genealogy, and wants me to help him with his family tree.
Can anyone recommend a book on family history suitable for a 10 year old.
I want to encourage him, and I thought if he had his own book on the subject  it might help to keep him interested.

Australia Lookups completed / Death 1915, Cobram, Victoria, Australia.
« on: Friday 11 April 08 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Stephen Shears was born at East Stonehouse, Devon in 1834.
His death on the Family Search web site is stated as being in Cobram, Victoria in 1915, but it is only a submitted record, and I know they are not always to be trusted.
The birth information is accurate.
Would some kind person be able to tell me where I should look to find out if the death at Cobram is correct.

Kind regards
siskin

The Common Room / Automobile Association
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 17:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have reason to believe that my Grandfather was one of the very early members of the Automobile Association, he may even have been at the inauguration in 1905.

Has anyone any idea if there are any early records of the AA, and if there are, where would they be held?

The AA web site only seems to deal with modern motoring, and not historical queries.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

England / Informant of a death in 1881
« on: Thursday 11 October 07 16:43 BST (UK)  »
I have today received a copy of death certificate, of a death that was registered in 1881.
The informant was the 12 year old granddaughter of the deceased, who was in attendance at the time of the death. It seems very young to be registering a death.
Maybe it was allowed as she was there at the time of the death and was also a relative, or maybe she looked older than 12 years old, and the registrar didn't query it, what does anyone else think?
