Yorkshire (West Riding) / Horsforth Workhouse Hill
« on: Wednesday 12 October 16 11:52 BST (UK)  »
My Great-grandfather, Joseph Bell's address in the 1901 census is 'Workhouse Hill, Horsforth'.  The next enumerated house is 'Troy Grange', which still stands on Troy Road-- which is a hill.  I cannot find Workhouse Hill on modern or older maps.  In former times did Workhouse Hill occupy the upper part of what is now Troy Road?  Does anyone know the location of the workhouse in Horsforth, which I believe is now a private dwelling?  I'm assuming that the road where it stands was once named Workhouse Hill, either officially or unofficially.  I have an old photo of the area and I believe my great-grandfather's house is shown on it.
Thanks for any help.

Roxburghshire / Joseph Bell, Stationmaster, Sprouston
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
My 3XGreat-grandfather, Joseph Bell's employment was given as stationmaster on his son's marriage certificate in 1854.  The only reference I can find to a stationmaster of that name is from a death notification entry in the Newcastle Courant  --  "Fri. 29 January 1858.  At Sprouston, on 19th inst. Mr Joseph Bell, stationmaster, Sprouston and formerly farmer at Greensfield, nr. Alnwick "

The family did farm in Northumberland for many years prior to the 1850s, so this could be "my" Joseph Bell.  However it is a common name and I would be grateful if anyone could provide further information on this Joseph Bell.  e.g.  any entries in local newspapers; was he buried at or near Sprouston and if he was, possible cemeteries. Perhaps a Memorial Inscription?    Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Harehills Cemetery,Leeds. BELL memorial inscription
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
My Great grandfather Joseph Bell was born about 1857 and died in Leeds .  The NBI gives a burial for a Joseph Bell at Harehills cemetery in March 1916, aged 60. I would be grateful for any info. on the MI ,if any, so that I can tell if he might be "my" Joseph.

Nottinghamshire / William HILL MI St Anne's, Sutton cum Lound
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 15:14 GMT (UK)  »
My GGgrandfather, William Hill was born in Notts, moved around a lot as a coachdriver and finally retired back to Notts. The NBI tells that a William Hill is buried  (1889) at St Anne's in Sutton cum Lound.  I would be grateful to be told what is on the memorial stone, if any for this William.  The age given, 84, matches"my" William but Hill is a fairly common name.

Nottinghamshire / HILL MI Sneinton St Stephen

My GG grandmother Esther Hill (nee Creech ) moved to Notts with her husband William. I see on NBI that there is an Esther Hill buried at St Stephens, Sneinton in May 1861.  I would be grateful if anyone could tell me what is said on the MI , if any.  Hill is a fairly common name and the info. may help me to tell if it is "my" Esther.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo size
« on: Friday 09 November 07 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have a photo which occupies just less than 1Mb on my computer and would like to send it for restoration.  I understand that it needs reducing to less than 0.5 Mb but am unsure how to do this.  I can reduce it to a "thumbnail" but is this suitable?  Also , although I am familiar with attaching to emails I cannot make out how attaching to a message sent to Rootschat works.  Sorry to be so ignorant.

New Zealand Completed Requests / DANNEVIRKE; --- RYDELL(spelling?)--- HILL marriage
« on: Monday 24 September 07 14:44 BST (UK)  »
My paternal grandmother, Fanny Hill had a sister who emigrated from Nottinghamshire, England to New Zealand and married a sheep farmer named Rydell ( or similar ) who "had a large farm in Dannevirke."  ( family folkore )

She had two sisters , Emily born about 1876 and Gertrude born about 1889.  I don't know  which of the two went to New Zealand, nor whether the marriage was in England or New Zealand.

Mr Rydell was probably a man of some consequence as I have been told that he once had his photo in a national newspaper in England ( the Daily Mirror ) -- although this could have been for sheep rustling for all I know !

I would be grateful if anyone has any information on the Rydells.  Thanks in anticipation.

Family folklore tells me that my grandmother had a sister Emily (?) HILL who married a "big" sheep-farmer named Rydell ( or similar, I'm not certain of the spelling) and went to live in Dannevirke, NZ.
Emily was born about 1876, so the marriage would, I assume , be in the late 1890s.  The wedding may have taken place in the UK or NZ ( or elsewhere ! ).  Mr Rydell once had his photo in a UK national newspaper ( The Daily Mirror ) so I imagine would be a person of some standing ( or a sheep rustler, perhaps ! ).
I would be most grateful for any information on Rydells/ Hill in NZ from about this period e.g. Immigration records, marriages, BMD etc
Thanks in advance

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Alnwick Baptism; Thomas Joseph BELL
« on: Monday 23 April 07 15:19 BST (UK)  »
My GGgrandfather, Thomas Joseph Bell is stated to be born in Alnwick in each Census from 1861.  His probable year of birth is 1831 ( or 1832 ).  His marriage certificate (1854 ) gives his father as Joseph Bell.  I would be most grateful if anyone could look for the record of his baptism.
Also, I have been unable to find Thomas in the 1841 or 1851 Censuses with any certainty, although there are one or two "possibles".  Neither have I been able to find Joseph Bell at all, partly as his name is so common. Any help would be much appreciated .  Thanks !
