Cumberland Lookup Requests / Loweswater Parish Registers - WOOD family in 1720s
« on: Sunday 02 February 20 22:39 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out if the following belong to the WOOD family of Low House, Brackenthwaite, so would like to know if any of their Parish Register entries (a marriage and four christenings) give their residence:

John Wood / Mary Dickinson, m 3 Jul 1726 Loweswater
(John is probably the son John of William Wood of Low House born in 1704)
-> likely children
Rachel Wood - c 20 Jul 1727   Lowes-Water
(m 9 May 1751 Lorton  to Samuel Norman)
Sarah Wood - c 20 Jul 1727   LOWESWATER
Deborah Wood - c 30 Oct 1731   LOWESWATER
   (m 9 Jun 1755 Loweswater  William Hodgshon)
John Wood - c 5 Jun 1737   LOWESWATER

Also, just in case you spot him, I'm trying to find the christening of Jonathan Wood who owned Low House in the 1770s - he could be another child of this marriage.

I'll be grateful for any help

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Great Redisham / Redisham - Tithe Map - MAYHEW
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 15:47 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access to the Tithe map for the parish of Great Redisham or Redisham (date probably 1840s) I would be grateful if they can look up what was owned or tenanted by Michael Mayhew (1787-1870).  He was one of the sons of John Mayhew (1747-1823), of whom several were farmers, but Michael seems to be the one who succeeded to his father's farm. [Elias (1785-1860) farmed in the Norfolk part of Mendham, Robert (1795-1831) (my ggg-gf) in Walpole.]

Any relevant information - or advice on how to find the exact farm of an ancestor when one only knows their dates and parish - will be welcome.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Chediston Parish - ADAMS / TOWNROE
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 15:37 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor John Mayhew, farmer of Redisham, who with his wife Elizabeth had 11 children at Westhall between 1772 and 1795; his will of 1823 gives much information on them.

Various family trees identify his marriage date as 13 Nov 1770 and give his wife as Elizabeth Adams.
The IGI doesn't have Westhall marriages between 1753 and 1813 so I don't know what the source is for this.  [Info on a source would be welcome, especially as otherwise there's no firm evidence that his wife's surname was Adams.]

Some family trees go on to identify her as the Eliz. Adams christened at Chediston on 20 Mar 1752, the oldest of perhaps 5 children of John Adams and Rebecca.  And there's a marriage at Chediston in 1751 [claimed in an ancestry.co.uk Family Tree  to be on 3 Sep] of John Adams and Rebecca Townroe.

My lookup request is for the marriage of John Adams & Rebecca Townroe, and for the christening of Eliz. and/or her siblings Mary (9 Jan 1755) and John (30 Dec 1756, 26 Mar 1758, 1 Jan 1763 - presumably the first two Johns died as infants), in the hope that these entries might give other information, such as their residence, names of witnesses or John's occupation.

Any help will be appreciated.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Nathaniel AUSTIN, Chippenham 1778 & 1785 lookup request
« on: Wednesday 10 April 13 15:40 BST (UK)  »
I'm interested in any extra details in the original records for
Nathaniel Austin, chr. 17 Apr 1785 Chippenham, and his family:
particularly his exact date of birth, which may match with the
Nathaniel Austin who founded a dynasty in Ceylon.
Other details, such as his father's profession, and where his
parents came from, etc would also be of interest.
So lookups of his christening entry and his parents' marriage
would be very helpful.

Family info from the IGI is as below:

Thanks - Denis

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Walpole 1820 & Halesworth 1823-25 PR lookup request - MAYHEW
« on: Wednesday 12 October 11 21:07 BST (UK)  »
I'd be very grateful if someone can look up the following and see if the entries give any extra information, especially on the husband/father Robert Mayhew (a farmer according to his son's marriage certificate of 1845).

(1) marriage 26 Dec 1820, Walpole:  Robert Mayhew /  Sarah Ellett
- according to national archives site: by licence,
Robert [...] Mayhew of the parish of Walpole, bachelor, age 24 and
Sarah Ellett of the parish of Kelsale, spinster age 21.

(2) baptisms of children of Robert & Sarah:
Robert Mayhew, 5 Feb 1823, Halesworth
Edward Mayhew, 3 Jun 1825, Halesworth

Any extra info - where they lived, names of witnesses, etc - would be helpful.

Thanks

Denis

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Alnwick parish registers 1813-37 - PURVIS
« on: Wednesday 10 March 10 18:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the birth/baptism of Thomas Joseph Purvis about 1820, and hope it can be found in the C of E parish registers of Alnwick or nearby.

TJP was the father of the marine artist Thomas George Purvis (1861-1933) and grandfather of the poster artist Tom Purvis (1888-1959),  who designed some well-known railway posters for LNER.

According to the 1851-71 censuses, Thomas Joseph Purvis was born in Alnwick, and if the ages he gives (30, 41, 50) are precise that would pinpoint his birth to between 2-8 April 1820 - but of course they may not be precise!  I've looked in the IGI, which seems to cover nonconformist registers but not C of E for this period, so hope he can be found in the register for Alnwick St.Michael.  In case not, he might be in one of the nearby parishes, e.g. Edlingham - I mention Edlingham because his father may have been there in 1834.

His parents should be Thomas Purvis, described as Sheriff's Officer in TJP's marriage cert. (1856), and Margaret, in Amble aged 68 in 1851, farmer's widow, born Glanton; that would put her birth at 1782/3, and maddeningly the parish register for Glanton starts in 1784 ..   Because of the mention of "farmer", I wonder if the father is the Thomas Purvis whose farm stock at Abberwick Mill was being sold in 1834.

Any help gratefully received ..

Denis
