Laois (Queens) / My great great grandfather's wedding
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 08:30 BST (UK)  »
I believe my gt gt grandfather was married in Mountmellick, County Laois, on 16 October 1849 (James Osborne to Jane Thompson), registration district Mountmellick, vol 8 p288, Ireland Civil Registration Marriage Index 1845-1958. How can I track down the church they were married in or whether it was a civil affair? I believe that the first two of their children were born in Ireland, first names Thomas ( b abt 1852, ) and Elizabeth ( b abt 1854). Any suggestions for further tracking any information about marriage details or birth details would be most welcome!

Kind regards,
del Piero

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / William Veale
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 10:26 BST (UK)  »
I believe that William Veale was born in Little Rissington around 1796 but cannot verify it. He later married Martha Rouse in Little Rissington in 1823 (IGI 455240). Any assistance welcomed. When he died in 1842 he was in the Nonconformist register.
Many thanks, del Piero

Family History Beginners Board / Help with 3 relatives
« on: Tuesday 10 May 11 09:24 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate any advice for more information on 3 relatives.
1. William Veale born abt 1796 in Little Rissington Gloucestershire (according to the 1841 census, his surname there is Peale). I have tried England and Wales Christening (1530-1906), Pallot's Baptism and London England Baptisms Marriages Burials (1538-1812). I am visiting the UK soon and plan to visit the area. Is there anything profitable I can do "on the spot"?
2.Jane Revell (Jane Hasell in the 1851 England census) is recorded as being born around 1792 in Wingerworth Derbyshire. Again she is is none of the 3 publications I have listed for William Veale.
3. Her husband (Henry Hasell) is supposedly born at Homchurch Essex in 1804 but again is not recorded in the above pub;lications. Are there other avenues for me to explore?
Many thanks

England / My gt gt gt gmother - an opera star?
« on: Saturday 30 June 07 10:02 BST (UK)  »
My mother has done a lot of research in to our family tree - not on the internet but by talking to family members. I have a gtgtgt grandmother born in Leicester in 1834. Her name was Martha Prichard. In 1854 she married Thomas Freestone although the family sometimes adopted the surnamne Winterton.
Family story has it that Martha was an opera star, and in the theatre went by the name of Dame Katherine Prichard. Apparently she was particularly well known for her singing of the song "The Last Rose of Summer", from the opera "Martha" by Flotow.
Can any member verify this in any way? She may have just performed in Leicester or may have travelled further afield.
Any help much appreciated.

« on: Sunday 17 June 07 14:13 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth record/baptism record for a Thomas Winterton, born in Leicester around 1834. He could have been registered as Thomas freestone, the family subsequently seemed to alternate in their use of Freestone or Winterton on their census returns!!!
His father's name was Thomas freestone, his mother's first name Ann. maiden surname possibly Fox.
Any help much appreciated!!!!

Europe / My German grandfather
« on: Sunday 11 March 07 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
My father's NZ birth certificate gives his father as John Martin, 64 years old, born in Germany. My father was born in 1923 so this makes my grandfather born around 1857.
My grandfather was married twice. In his earlier marriage in 1885 in NZ his age is said to be 26, born in Barth, Germany. This makes his date of birth around 1859.
A family story has him arriving in NZ on a ship the "LookOut", an Australian commercial vessel, in 1869, aged 19 years. This would make his date of birth 1850.
During WW1 he apparently changed his name to Martin because of antiGerman sentiment at the time and the risk of internment, His name was Marten.
Apparently his original German name was Johann Marten (or a similar spelling of John).
I have been told his father was also "John" Marten (a brewer) and his mother's name was Lena (or Zena) Schroeker.
In April I am visiting Berlin and will drive about 250km north to the Baltic coast to the town of Barth.
If possible I would like to learn more before I go.
Family history has the Marten family emigrating to England when my grandfather was 6 years old. Apparently they stayed several years before emmigrating to Australia.
Any advice about how I could get any kind of official documentation about my grandfather's birth or his family would be most appreciated.
Many thanks,
Dennis Martin

Family History Beginners Board / Lost at sea- a sad story
« on: Thursday 08 March 07 13:19 GMT (UK)  »
Lost at sea – a  sad story

I am a New Zealander trying to learn more about my Scottish heritage.
A family story goes as follows:
“John Sinclair brought his daughter (Christina) to NZ in a sailing ship. He left her in NZ with an aunt and uncle. John Sinclair then returned to Glasgow to bring his wife to NZ.
Tragically the ship was “lost with all hands” in the Irish Sea.

Background:
I have found Christina Sinclair (b. 1846, Glasgow, Lanark) and her mother, Christina Sinclair (b. 1818, Crieff, Perthshire) in the 1851 Scotland census. They are listed as “lodgers”. She (the mother) is listed as a “seaman’s wife”.
On 28 November 1865 Christina Sinclair (the daughter) married in New Zealand.
Family history records John Sinclair as the “captain” of the ship.

So Christina must have arrived in NZ between 1851 and 1865.

I have done a Google on “shipwrecks in the Irish Sea” without success. Can anyone help?
The daughter Christina is my great grandmother.
                     Manythanks,
            Dennis Martin
