Lincolnshire / Gainsborough Workhouse records 1878
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 22:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I've found online a reference to my ggg gf Joseph SMITH entering Gainsborough Workshouse:

1 January 1878
SMITH Joseph, Brampton medical case

I know Joseph later died in the Workshouse on 20th Feb 1882 age 59 (his death cert states cause of death "diahorrea" !?)

If anyone has access to the Workhouse records, I'd be very grateful if you please could have a quick look and see if there's any further information on him?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I'm trying to find two families in this area in 1841 but don't have access to the census for Notts. Please could someone with access to this census have a look and see if they can find them for me?

There are three villages where both these families are likely to have lived in 1841:

Thorney HO107/862 book 11 folio 1-7
Broadholme HO107/862 book 12 folio 1-4
Wigsley HO107/862 book 13 folio 1-4

The Hall family in 1841 they would most likely be composed of:

George HALL, 48, Ag Lab, born Thorney
Sarah HALL, 45, born Little Markham
William HALL, 18,born Thorney
Jane HALL, 18, born Wigsley/Thorney
George HALL, 16, born Thorney
Ann HALL, 13, born Thorney
Betsey HALL, 2, born Thorney

Of this family, I'm interested in Jane who went on to marry Joseph SMITH in 1849 whose family possibly consisted of:

William SMITH, labourer, possibly around 50yo
(wifes name unknown)
Joseph SMITH, poss servent or Ag Lab, age 18, born South Carlton, Lincs
+ other children as yet unknown.

I'm stuck on these, especially the Smiths as all I know of Joseph's family is from his marriage certificate in 1849 where his father is listed as William, so any information would be fantastic.

Thanks,
Adam

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841 W. Derby, Liverpool lookup DAVENEY
« on: Monday 09 January 06 13:42 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone with access to the 1841 census for Liverpool do a lookup for me? I'm hoping to find the DAVENEY family in 1841, possibly in West Derby, Liverpool. In 1841 the family would be made up of:

Burton DAVENEY,  ab 25yo, occupation unknown, born poss Liverpool or Ireland.
Charlotte Clara DAVENEY, ab 25yo, poss Dressmaker, born Lancs (Burnley)
Charles DAVENEY, 6yo, born Ireland.

The surname is often spelled phoentically (eg, Davney, Devenny etc..). If anyone could help on this I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,
Adam

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1841 lookup Middleton / Blackley KERSHAW & JACKSON
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 09:15 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access to the 1841 census for Blackley, Manchester, I'd be very grateful if you could you look up two families for me:

Thomas KERSHAW born 1821 (20yo in 1841, tho he may be listed as 25). I believe his father might be Peter born 1801, but I'm in no way convinced of this.

The other family is for Ann JACKSON b1822. I'm pretty sure her parents were Ambrose and Esther born around 1794. Ann had many siblings including Charles b1838, Catharine b1833, James b1827, and Eliza b1826.

I'm struggling with these two families so any information I can get would be fantastic.

Thanks,
Adam

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Old photos for identification - where were they taken?
« on: Friday 25 February 05 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
I have a few photos which are of people who we can't identify. All these photos were taken in Halifax, but I could do with identifying whereabouts they were taken, which might hopefully identify the people in them. As sometimes copies of photos were distributed amongst families, it may be possible someone else has copies of them. To see the photos click here:

Any information I can get would be very useful.

Thanks,
Adam

I am trying to find records of Joseph SMITH born in the village of South Carlton in 1827.

The last record (which someone from this site very kindly found for me) was in 1861 where he was living in Brampton with his wife Jane and children.

As the eldest child I have recorded was born in 1852. It's possible Joseph was unmarried in 1851, and hopefully in 1841 was still living with his parents.

In 1861 the family goes:
Brampton Grange in 1861 - 2411/39

Joseph 38 Farm Bailiff b South Carlton
Jane 38 b Wigsley, Notts
Abram 10 b Broadholme
Sarah 5 b Brampton
William 3 b Brampton
Lucy 1 b Brampton

The youngest child, Abraham may or may not have been born by 1851. Abraham was born in Broadholme, so Joseph may have been there in 1851. The family would like this is 1851 if Joseph was married:

Joseph SMITH, head, age 28, born South Carlton
Jane SMITH, wife, age 28, born Wigsley
Abraham SMITH, son, age >1, Broadholme/Brampton

It may be though that Joseph was still living with his parents (whom I don't know the names of).

In 1841 Joseph may still be in South Carlton age of 18, possibly with his parents, likely working as an Agricultural Labourer.

If anyone can help me with this I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Adam

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Chancery Lane 1803 birth Charles SWAINSON
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 13:10 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a record for the birth of Charles SWAINSON. In the 1851 census he stated he was born Chancery Lane, London around 1803. By 1827 he was living in Yorkshire.

I'm not sure what records I need to look at for central London, would someone please point me in the right direction or have a look for me - I'd love to know who his parents were.

Thanks,
Adam

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1861 Saxilby / Broadholme / Brampton, Abraham SMITH
« on: Friday 11 February 05 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone have a look at the 1861 census at Saxilby, Broadholme or Brampton for Abraham SMITH, with his father Joseph SMITH.

Abraham is listed variously in the 1871 / 81 / 91 and 1901 census's as being born in Saxilby / Broadholme and Brampton, although in 1871 he was living in Finningley.

In 1861, Abraham would be 9 or 10 and his father was Joseph. Joseph in 1871 was listed as a Farm Baliff.

I know it's not much to go on but with the surname Smith I need all the help I can get!

Thanks,
Adam

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1841 Halifax (Northowram) Census - CROSSLEY
« on: Monday 20 December 04 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has access to the 1841 census, would it be possible to look up the CROSSLEY family in Northowram; they should be in a very specific part of Northowram called either Pule Hill, Pule Green or Pule Nick (it's near the Ski Slope at Ploughcroft). The family and ages in 1841 would be:

??? CROSSLEY, Head (he wasn't present in 1851 so I don't know his forename or age),
Hannah CROSSLEY, Wife, age 59, possibly a Wool Comber
Thomas CROSSLEY, Son, age 25, possibly a Wool Comber

All born in Northowram. There will probably be other children present as well.

Thanks,
Adam
