Hertfordshire / Union House
« on: Saturday 03 June 06 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can any body tell me what Union House was in Layston, Hertfordshire in 1851. I have a possible relative living here, there are lots of other people living here, so it must be some kind of communial home.

My possible relative appears to be with others in the family, but it does not really that clear. He is listed as son, there is other siblings & a wife & a man with no title poss his father.

I would love to know what this Union House was so I can wonder how he came to be there.
Many thanks for anyones help.  :D

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Dunbar Mystery - Shoreditch
« on: Friday 30 September 05 21:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am hoping that someone can shed some light.

I have a Mary Ann Dunbar who married a William Joseph Burleigh in 1878 in Shoreditch, Mary Anns. According to Mary Ann's birth certificate it states that her mother was a Selina Dunbar formerly Harlock & her father was Joseph Dunbar, both living at 45 Upper John Street, Hoxton Old Town, Middlesex. His profession a Carman.

I have tried to search for a marriage of a Selina Harlock & Joseph Dunbar without luck, the odd thing though is that I have located a marriage for a Selina Harlock & a Thomas Dunbar of Shoreditch, I ordered the certificate & found that Thomas is a Carman as per his daughters birth certificate & that his father is an Alexander Dunbar, this matches with the birth certificate I have for a Joseph Dunbar. I wondered if perhaps Joseph's middle name was Thomas, but I cannot find that it is. Someone suggested that perhaps Thomas is Joseph's brother & that Selina married the brother after. I have not yet found that Joesph had a brother Thomas.

None of the census's I have mention a Thomas with a Selina only a Joseph.

Is someone able to help me understand why the marriage states a Thomas & not a Joesph as I think it should be.

Many thanks for your help.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Burleigh in Gloucestershire or Somerset
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody help?

John Burleigh born circa 1791 in Gloucestershire (not sure where). I have found a John Burley on the LDS site born 19 Oct 1796 in Thornbury it states that his father was a Thomas & mother Sarah. I am not sure if this is my John with a mis-spelling.
John moved to Yatton in Somerset & married a Hester, they then had 5 children, Charles, Margaret, James, John & Mary.
If anyone can help establish if it is or isn't the John I am looking for.
Many thanks - Sadie

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1851 Croydon, Surrey Lookup Please
« on: Wednesday 26 January 05 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am tracing a Richard Bell born circa 1811. I have found him on the 1871 census living in Greenwich as an Architect with his wife Caroline. But was hoping that they may appear on the Croydon Census as around the 1860's they could have been here based on the birth places of the children.
The children on the 1871 are:
Caroline b. 1846 (Shoreditch, London)
Clarissa J. b.1856 (Reigate, Surrey)
Stuart R. b.1858 (Croydon)
Frank P.1857 (Croydon)
Zante Claude b.1861(no idea where this name came from!) (Croydon)
Stanley L. b.1863 (Nutfield, Surrey)

I have traced Zante, Frank & Stuart going to Australia in 1875 on the Tim Whiffler ship to Maryland, no Richard or Caroline travelling with them though, they have an another child Russell Bertram who is my descendant.
I found a Caroline Bell that ties in on the 1881 as a widow so I think maybe Richard had died. He was 41 in 1852 when they married (have cert).
I would really like to see if I can find him on the 1851. Hackey was his place of birth on the 1871 census, his address on the marriage cert states The Strand & Carolines address Brighton. Parish of marriage St Martins in the Field.
I know that the marriage date conflicts with the birth of some of the children, but at this stage I have no idea why.
I know the 61 is not indexed, but it would be great if anyone can find the couple on that census too.
Thank you for any help - Sadie   :'(

Australia Lookups completed / Maryborough, Queensland 1875
« on: Friday 21 January 05 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi hope someone can help me.  :D

I am trying to find out more information about ancestors who travelled to Maryborough in 1875 on the TIM WHIFFLER ship, they left London on 6th Mar 1875 & arrived in Australia on 16th Jun 1875....film M1697.

Their names were:
Zante Claude Bell (on the list he is Zante E, Cs & Es can look similar when transcribing)
Frank Bell aged 17
Stuart (Stewart) Bell

Frank was the eldest traveller at 17. Estimated age for Zante is 14 & Stuart 16.

They were young to be travelling on their own, maybe they were travelling an Uncle or friend not given with the surname Bell.

Their parents were Richard & Caroline Bell, Richard an Architect. Not sure if they went across.

If anybody can help me find out a bit more that would be fantastic.

Many thanks - Sadie  :-*

Is anybody able to help or make suggestions.

I am stuggling to find information that makes any sense.

My gg grandma is an Emma or Emily Pearson. The information I have so far is that she was born abt 1861 in East Farleigh, Kent. I also have that she is buried in Manor Park Cemetery (London/Essex).

The details that I am finding are leaving me puzzled. I have found 2 births that either or none could be her:
Emma Elizabeth Pearson b. 1861 - North Aylesford Maidstone 2a 314
or
Emily Clara Pearson b. 1861 - Maidstone 2a 461 Mar

I cannot find her marriage with John Clarke who was born in Norwich abt 1851, but I can locate them on the 1891 & 1901 census living in Chigwell Essex, their children were: Emma, Kate, Albert, Sydney, Nellie, Arthur, Eliza, Maud & a John b. 1901 (my g grandfather).
On both censuses she is an Emma & aged 30 & 41 born on both at East Farleigh.

I have searched the 1871 & found a likely, the name this time Emily aged 10 (ties in), her father George widowed. I think I have then found him on the 1881 remarried to a Sophia. Cannot find Emma/Emily on the 1881.

I cannot find Emma or Emily at all. I'm wondering if she married someone else before John & had a different surname which is why I cannot find a marriage.

I hope that this information isn't too confusing I have tried to detail it in the hope that somebody can help.

Here's hoping, many thanks - Sadie :(
