Ireland / Larminie is this an Irish name?
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I am trying to find an origin for the name Larminie.
it was given to one of my ggreatgrandmother's brother's as his 2nd name. He was the 1st born child so am wondering if it was his maternal grandmothers maiden name.
What i have as background is this: Walter Larminie Earle (1855-1916 Aust) Parents Arthur Earle(1824-1906 born Kingston on Hull married Canada died Aust)
Persis Farrell (1826-1904 born Ireland died Aust).
I have not been able to trace Persis at all so am hoping maybe this will be a clue as to her history. (I have found no immigration, census, births, deaths or marriages apart from the 1851 Canadian Census for any of my Farrells) All the info i have is from a birth cert for the youngest Earle child born in Aust and the Galt census kindly found by a rootschat member.
The Earle's are also proving a major headache but that is for a different place.

England / what county is Bucks Windsor in please
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 03:27 BST (UK)  »
On the 1861/71 census Thomas Wright and wife Sarah are living in Chelsea. For their place of birth it states Bucks Windsor. I am trying to find a marriage for them and a maiden name for Sarah. Their first child was born 1841 in Middlesex (according to the census).
If i can find out the birth county i will have more luck locating the marriage(i hope)

Canada Lookup Request / Earle/Farrell in Galt in 1851 marriage
« on: Tuesday 16 October 07 07:31 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to lookup a marriage in Canada which took place on the 11 Nov 1851 in Galt  Canada West.
The brides family were methodist and the groom was one starting with e (I think a form of c/e).
The bride was Persis Farrell and the groom was Arthur Earle if any information is available can someone please point me in the correct direction to find it.
I don't know when either of them arrived in Canada but do know they were there for the 1851 census. (Persis from Ireland...with her family, Arthur from Yorkshire alone)

Mayo / Please can someone tell me Westport is.
« on: Sunday 14 October 07 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi all . I have a birth certificate for my greatgrandmother which says her mother was born in Westport Ireland. Not knowing anything at all about Ireland i am completely in the dark.
What i have working backwards is this Ellie Earle (1862-1952 Australia).
Her parents were Arthur Earle(1824 Yorkshire-1906 Australia) and Persis Farrell(1825 Westport-1904 Australia) This couple were apparently married in Canada about 1850(but i have had no success finding records)
The Farrell family appear to have immigrated from Ireland as a unit as they are all together on the census of 1851 in Galt with the married couple. I do not know when they immigrated or when Arthur did. I also do not know when they left Canada and set sail for Australia. What i do know is that their first child was born in Australia in 1855
My question is where is Westport and was Farrell a common name?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / help Thomas Vigers
« on: Tuesday 02 October 07 04:14 BST (UK)  »
Help please.
I have finally been able to access the free 1881 census on ancestry so imagine my horror to see 2 Thomas Vigers living in London. Registration District St George Hanover Square.
Of these  one was born in 1824 married to Jane Sarah and has 4 sons living at home. He was an undertaker.
The other born 1834 was married to Sarah T  1 son and 1 daughter. This one was a carpenter. My problem is I can find no other records (births, Marriages etc) for the second family.

Both have sons named Thomas who were born about 10 yrs apart. I am trying to discover if they were related in anyway my guess would be about 2 generations but not being able to find any information on the 2nd family i have hit a brick wall.
I do not have access to the actual images so one may be a transcription error.
any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Australia Lookups completed / help Land grants
« on: Friday 21 September 07 06:18 BST (UK)  »
I am confused. I have recently been given information regarding a distant relative. The info states that he was given a grant of crown land in New South Wales and ended up marrying the daughter on one of the convicts assigned to him.
My confusion arises from the fact that i cant find when he came to Australia (He was born in 1834 in London) His father-in-law was sentenced in 1833 to 7years transportation for stealing a copper kettle.
My problems 1. how old would have been a suitable age to travel alone and                          receive a land grant
2. How would i find out if Father-in-law received a second sentence in Australia other wise my fellow was a land holder at the age of 6
3.Apparently the father-in-law was already married in England before transportation but i can only find births for children after 1841 in Australia(His wife came to Aust too).

The land holders name was John Vigers Baptized 1834 London(Parents Edward and Maudlin) and died Scone NSW1914

The convict (Father-in-Law) was Samuel Jennison  1802 Belper Derby England died 1860 NSW

John Vigers married Jemima Jennison May 1860 in Gowrie NSW and together they had 3 sons and 13 daughters (i have only found births or deaths for 9 children so far)

There was still family living in NSW about 10yrs ago but i have no idea have to locate them. A white pages search for Australia only revealed 4 in West Aust (including my brother and Father) and none for the rest of the country.

Any ideas on how to find this information would be gratefully appreciated.

Devon Lookup Requests / Tavistock lookups if possible
« on: Monday 17 September 07 08:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all I am hoping some one knows whether it is possible to access parish records for Tavistock.
I am trying to find the parents and siblings for Edward Vigous/Vigers/Vigures (and any other spellings that seem to abound) So far from the information i have he was baptised in Tavistock Jan 1726, married to Hannah Crossman in 1752 in Whitchurch Devon and died in !782. Hannah died in 1801 in Tavistock.
I can't seem to locate anything on the family search site and was wondering if i am doing something wrong. The information above was recieved from a relative and i would like to be able to varify it for myself.
If anyone has ideas please feel free to suggest anything except looking in person. Hopefully this information is available online.
Thankyou for reading my request

The Common Room / locating documents relating to me
« on: Monday 27 August 07 01:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Just thought i would mention a couple of small hiccups i encountered last week when trying to organise my passport.
1. My marriage cert (which we have always used) didn't have a registration number on it. It is an original with all the signatures but no number. Sent hubby to the registers office(200km each way) to get a new one. There response... sorry you are not in the book or on the computer are you sure of the date. They then had to search through the boxes of originals to find it. After almost 25 yrs of marriage we had been given a number then filed. We were lucky at least now we are on the system, apparently other people have not been so lucky and have had to get remarried because their documents are completely missing.

2. I also had to get a full birth cert (my extract no good anymore) Not so much of a problem but was intrigued to note my fathers place of birth. Southern Rhodesia South Africa. (My grandmother was obviously straddling the border when he was born) Should be either Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia or Southern Rhodesia, Southern Africa.

I am glad we sorted this out before future generations started looking and couldn't find us.

Take care and hopefully no one else has tales like this
