The Common Room / Newspaper article help please.
« on: Today at 00:51 »
Hi,
Is it possible anyone  would be kind enough  to look at  this  below article  for  me please.
I have full access to The Irish Newspapers archive,  but they don't  hold this newspaper, article and I don't currently have a sub with BNA:

From the free  BNA search:
Larne Times
Thursday 3rd Aug 1944.
"Carrickfergus News
Unhappy news for Mr and Mrs John Graham 4 essex street, Carrickfergus,  were recently notified that their son fusilier Graham ( Scottish Fusiliers had been killed  on active service ) received more bad news at week-end....."

I would  just like to know what the more bad news is that they received .
Their above son  , died 25th June 1944 in Normandy.( William Graham)
Their  other son ( step  son to the father,  Francis kirk , who is the mother's  son from  her previous  marriage. Francis  kirk was wounded back in late 1943 , don't  know if he recovered. ( his father by the same name, died back in ww1, his mother  remarried my great uncle John Graham)

Their other son Jack ( John jnr) Graham he was also wounded  ( lost an eye) back in  late 1942 in  North Africa.

So I am wondering  what is the "More"  bad news they  received  in Aug 1944  quoted in the above text ( which is a much later date than all the other injuries / deaths to their children  that I do know about).

Thank you for any help.
Ps
Please don't  post the image if it  violates copyright , I just  would like to know  what the " more bad news" is.

Antrim / Bones Purdy marriage help needed please to find the registration
« on: Tuesday 07 May 24 03:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for a little help to find  a record of marriage between a John Purdy and Minnie Bones, which  I can't  find after  many months and months of trying. I am hoping someone can spot it ,where I have failed to do so.

Details on  birth cert  which I hold for their eldest child purchased from Groni, William Purdy  11th Nov 1922 address  knockboy ( sub reg Broughshane, reg Ballymena)
Mother on  cert, Minnie Bones, father John Purdy.(  labourer)
Present at birth was Lizzie Bones (which I think is the brides mother,if I  have the right Minnie Bones in the 1911 census, which I am almost confident is her,  or could be her sister Sarah as her middle name is Elizabeth)

Mary/ Minnie  died  in 1990    (husband John  died  back in the 1960s from a mining accident . I  have his death cert , plus various records including newspaper reports, I don't  have his wife's death  cert ,  but I have her obituary and various  newspaper reports ),

Minnie/Mary Bones was born  9 feb 1902 in the townland of Pollee  , near Broughshane ( named Mary on her own birth registration/cert ,   Minnie on her son William's  birth cert,  both Mary  and Minnie on other various  records). I can't  find her birth  on Irish Genealogy site, for some  reason, it probably hasn't  been uploaded, but it can be found on Groni . I haven't purchased her birth cert as it is showing mother's  name Thompson( andn her sister  Sarah's cert  is on Irish Genealogy to  view the details freely).

Parents William Bones (Iron ore miner on both her sister's birth and on censuses) and lizzie/Elizabeth Thompson, both parents  are also in the  2 censuses in Pollee ( 1911 with her daughter Minnie + Sarah)

(John was born + bred in  the townland Loughconnoly 21 feb 1900,  who  is my grandmother's oldest  sibling, I don't need any help with John's history  ,I am  just trying to find his official marriage to his wife Mary )

John + Mary  spent the majority of their married life ( and after her husband died)  at Tullymore cottages Broughshane , except for where  William, their 1st b child  was born ( knockboy). It was probably their  first home together  after they "married", or perhaps  that was her parents home in the year of 1922, and they were living with them for that short time when she was pregnant/ giving birth with  1st born, I don't know.

William I am pretty sure is 1st born as far as ages/ order of births of all their known children are concerned- all their other known children were born 1924   to 1941 ,( the youngest child was  born 1941 and died in 1973) .
A few of John and Mary's children I know for  100% sure are deceased ( including William who died in 1992)  , but won't  name all their other children ( they had  a load of children from first  born 1922 up until the youngest  in 1941)   just in case some of the others are still alive, (it was only less two years  ago that one of their  daughters died.

I can't  seem to find their marriage, or is it a case of they never officially married? Which strikes  me odd in this case  .
Am I missing their  marriage registration with my searches on Groni ( and Irish  genanology) . I've also searched  the Newspapers over  the years.

I've tried all variations  I can think of, and of course also searched beyond when their first child was born.

I'd  really appreciate it if anyone  could take a look to see  if they can find their marriage,  in case I am missing the obvious and it is there looking straight at me .
The marriage should be inbetween the years  of 1916 and 1922  - but of course could be years after  the 1922  birth of his  1st child too (  which I've  also searched but to no avail)
Kind regards

Ps the later marriage in 1948  is the marriage of  one of his other sons ,I have this cert   (this is his next  born  child,  born  abt 1924/ 1925 . I haven't got his birth certicate  yet due to 100 year rule online, and have to wait  until next year, or maybe the year  after to check if his mother  Mary says  "Bones" too (  in case his father  "married " two Mary's throughout his lifetime and first Mary died - although can't find a death for her if that was the  actual case). I don't  know  for sure if second born child  is deceased,  probably is, but have never found a death for him in the papers amd orbits . I think he was still  alive in 1992 , as he  is mentioned in his sibling's  orbit and it doesn't say  he is " late brother of" ( deceased), so there's  a small possibility he's maybe still alive today, so won't  mention his actual name.

I also have had the thought  many times, that John  could  have married twice,  to two Mary's ( eg first Mary died ) ,  but I still can't  find  the marriage to one single person called Mary/ Minnie   - where John  100% certainly had a "wife" called Mary Bones who was the mother  of his  first born child ,  plus  when John died   his wife was 100%  a  Mary ,as too  on various  records throughout, and when Mary herself died in the 1990s too.

Sorry for the long post, I've tried to put  as much  info  in  (without naming all the children  as some of them may be still alive, some I 100% know have died ,  but haven't named them either)  so others  don't  gather stuff I already have , so  not to waste  anyone's time.
It's  only the marriage I am looking for between John  Purdy and Mary/Minnie Bones, the named parents on Williams birth in 1922.
Thank you for any help.

Antrim / St Patrick's COI Ballymoney
« on: Monday 24 July 23 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Could anyone please tell  me where are the records for Baptisms held for the year of 1907  with St Patrick's  Ballymoney.
Are they still with the church? The records office don't  seem to hold them those years. (?)
  who do I contact ?   ( email , I am in
Aus)  within the church to check  for me?

I am still trying to chase up my grandfather's baptism  ( he was born in 1907 in Ballymoney but moved to Carrickfergus when he was a baby - he is not baptised there ( a  kind person checked the churches for me many years ago who lives around carrickfergus) . I believe my grandfather most likely was baptised in Ballymoney .

He and his family were were  COI

Thanks for any help

World War Two / Paying for Army records TNA ref numbers?
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 02:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Rather than writing another email to the TNA , as every  email I've  recieved from them  it takes them two to three weeks to respond  -  I am wondering  if anyone here has gone through applying  and paying for their records , and can answer my question.

I have received  an email yesterday with a link to pay for the service records I wish to obtain :

"Thank you for your recent request for information from The National Archives.

Check your enquiry details below and follow the link to Worldpay to proceed to payment.[/i][/b][/u]

Enquiry reference number: PAY 02xxx-Cxxxxx

Fee request:

Fee amount: 24.35 GBP (no VAT added "

Xxx ( link here to pay which I've  crossed out)  "

The email  I recieved prior to that  ( and  which I responded  to, saying I wish to proceed with the request  ) quoted a ref number which was assigned to my case,  which is totally different to the above ref number ( and one digit more too)
Part of the Email below ( the rest of the email is blurb about Freedom of Information and fees and so on, the name of my grandfather and his service number , and if I wish to proceed please let them know so they can give me a final cost and a pay link)  :

"Your reference number is CAS-1XXXXX-YXXXXX . Please quote this reference number in future correspondence with regards to your case to enable us to identify your request more easily. "

My question  is , were your Enquiry Ref numbers to pay for the records  completely  different from your Case Ref numbers ( minus the PAY , and CAS letters  of course) ?
I don't  want to pay for it , if they've  mixed  me up with someone else. ( they have my own name right - it's  just the completely different  Enquiry and Case ref numbers that  I am querying  - as I would have expected them to be the same ref numbers, and they're not). The link  which I am taken to , to pay for it ,and their email does  not give any other info except my own name and the  completely different ref numbers ( and  no name of the soldier unlike their previous  email - so it's not enough to check  if it's correct before I hit the pay button - The only thing I know  is correct  is my own name  )

Kind regards
Ps I am in Australia , so it's  bit difficult to phone  them within their business hours , and it seems their phones aren't  manned  according to their site - you apparently have to  leave you phone  number with them and they'll call you ( which I guess could be weeks if it's anything like their  time response with emails) .
They have a live chat it seems Tuesday to Saturday , which I may try using *tonight  (* my time here) if that works
I just wondered if anyone here has gone through the whole process ,and could confirm that their  own ref numbers were completely different to eachother  too , and  if it is just  the way  the TNA do it . It saves me trying to get in contact with them to ask the question.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with a name or a word please
« on: Wednesday 15 February 23 06:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone read the last word please, (after Graham).
I don't  have any other handwriting by the same person to compare the letters/word to.

It's  out of a baptism bible , where indvidual people have signed their own names, so posting more or the page wouldn't be of any help.
.
I can't  for the life of me work out the word. It just looks like  capital letters and two numbers to me , which  really doesn't make sense to me.
???
Thank you for any help.
Kind regards

Hi,
For the past year I've had notifications  from  My Heritage sent to me every week in emails ( basically every week without  fail) of new matches.

More importantly   if anyone messages  me  I  used to get an email immediately  ( I don't  get one  at all now!)

For the past few months  I haven't received anything from them at all- for example,   I messaged someone months  ago, and I didn't  even realise  they replied to me !   ( the person who replied to  me  actually had  exactly  same problem  as me  , they are not receiving any notifications at all  sent to them)

I  get  zilch  emails from my heritage, where I  used to get them  every week, and basically immediately if anyone messaged me- is it because  I am not  a fully paid up subscriber ?  It  almost seems to me they have stopped with the emails after 12 months.  Everything  was great until a few months ago .

Is anyone else having  this problem ? After around about  a year  has elapsed of an unloading a kit ( non subscriber, uploaded  ancestry kit, and paid for unlock)  ,
not revieving  any weekly emails of matches and much  more importantly
No notifications sent to you informing you  of a message ?

Kind regards
Ps it is.is not my settings  , or anything I've  changed.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Shared matches on Ancestry? Bit of an odd one
« on: Friday 06 January 23 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
Bit of an odd one .Does anyone  know the reason  why ancestry computers don't seem to pick up on some of the  shared matches  of a  lower cm match  , ie  they  tell you that  you that you dont  have any shared matches at all  with the match - when you know for certain that you do have shared matches with that match? If that makes sense .(  ie under  the shared matches tab on each of your matches)

For example , I  have a proven common ancestor ,  who I share  8cm with my 5th cousin  . The match is also on my through lines ( not that really matters)

What I don't understand is that between myself and my 5th cousin  is that  we  don't have any shared matches  between us at all  ( which of course is perfectly normal when it's that far back because we are only sharing 8cm  between the two of us  )  - BUT, and this is a massive big  BUT!   -  Because  we should definitely have a shared match showing between us  -  as my child should be  showing  as our  shared match.

In my child's DNA matches ,  my child has  the  very same person/cousin as a match, and it is also showing on my child's through  lines too , going though his mum if course - me (  the match is   5th cousin once removed to my child) . My child shares a tiny bit more than I share with  the same cousin (but  it's only 9cm, whilst mine  is 8cm).- common ancestors is the same as mine of course.

But according  to ancestry " shared matches " my child and this match does not share any shared matches  with the cousin either  lol    ( same as it's  showing on my shared matches with the same person - ie zilch  shared matches   )

Why is ancestry not picking up on both mother and child are  genetically matching to this same person under the " shared matches " tab ".- when clearly we are both genetically  related  to the same  person by 8cm and 9cm ?  It doesn't happen on any if the high cm matches between myself  and child , but I have  noticed it on quite  a few of the low cms shared matches  between myself and child.
It makes me wonder how many other shared matches between matches really  should be there , and they are not showing them .

( the DNA of  myself, my child's, and the matches are not recent uploads, so it is not because of awaiting updates etc )

Kind regards
