Armed Forces / Royal Naval Wives
« on: Friday 29 April 22 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Bit of an odd query but someone might know.

If a husband was on board a RN ship at the China Station for several years (1900-1903) would he have returned to the UK on leave?

Also did the wives ever go to join their husbands?

Thanks

Would a couple getting married in the 1920s have needed to show their birth certificates to the vicar or registrar before the ceremony could take place?

The Common Room / Your thoughts please
« on: Tuesday 05 April 22 13:11 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching for over 10 years but like many of you I have questions which remain unanswered.

So I am asking for your thoughts on this one.

Harry was born in 1908 in Lincolnshire and his father died the same year. In 1911 he is living with his maternal grandparents in Lincolnshire. His mother is working in service but she too dies in 1919. Harry was an only child.

In 1921 Harry is living in Sculcoates, Hull. He is listed in the census as “adopted”.
My relative Emily has given him a home along with her own 2 children aged 18 and 11. Emily was widowed just a year earlier and does not appear to have worked, she would have had her late husband’s Royal Navy pension I assume.

So how did Harry end up in Yorkshire from Lincolnshire?
Why did Emily take in an extra person to the household ?

There is no family connection between Emily and Harry….. I have looked and looked.

So any thoughts or ideas or info from anyone out there. There must be something that I have not considered.

Thanks

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Help with COLLINS Family 1901
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking at this family who I can find on the 1891 census but then they disappear. Perhaps someone can find them on the 1901 for me.

Eastleach, Turville, Gloucs   1891
George Collins     54   B Wantage Berks
Kate Collins         44   b Broad Hinton Wilts
George                17   b Lea Wilts
Rose                    16   b Langford Gloucs
Alice                     12  b Ufcott Wilts
William                 10  b Little Hinton Wilts
Elizabeth              6    b Ashbury  Berks
Beatrice                4    b Eastleach Gloucs
Lily                       ?    b Baulking Berks
Robin?                  7    b Shorncote Gloucs

On the 1881 they are in Little Hinton but some of the childrens' names don't seem to tie up. Any thoughts?  Kate appears as Catherine.

Would like some opinions on this little lot if anyone has time to look,
Thanks  Sue

Hi,

Just wondering if there is anyone out there who lives in Brecon and could tell me whether number 5 Priory Hill is still in existence. If it is could you tell me what type of property it is.

Thanks  Sue

« on: Monday 29 December 08 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm at a dead end with this one so perhaps someone can help me. I am trying to find Edward Langford on the 1861 and 1871 census returns but with no success. This is what I have so far.

Marriage cert 1879
Edward Langford 21            father Thomas
Jane Ward           20            father Charles

1881            Mill cottage,  Thornbury, Hereford
Edward Langford   23  ag lab     b Kingsland
Jane Langford        22                b Pencombe

1891 Eardisland Ferndale Hill
Edward Langford  38   ag lab     b Pembridge
Jane                      31                 b Bromyard
Albert                     9                   b Bromyard
William                   7                   b Ivington
Alice J                    4                    b Canon Pyon
George                  2                    b Canon Pyon
Amy                       1                    b Canon Pyon

1901 Little Nupton Canon Pyon
Edward Langford  25                  b NK
Jane                      38                  b Bromyard
Alice                      15                  b Canon Pyon
George                 12                  b Canon Pyon
Amy                      9                    b Canon pyon
Annie                    7                    b Kings Pyon
Ernest                  5                    b Canon Pyon
Henry                   1                    b Canon Pyon

As you can see the ages on the 1901 are a bit odd but I'm putting that down to ennumerator error!

So can anyone find Edward pre 1881 please
Thanks  Sue

« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I can go about finding the register for marriages in a Methodist chapel. I have looked on A2A but the chapel I am interested in is not catalogued there. Any ideas where I can look next.

Hi,

Just wondering if people have found info by searching the full index which was not on freeBMD. I am searching for a death between 1892 and 1901.
